It’s not the kind of thing that happens overnight. Without you realising, it infiltrates you; suddenly, your energy starts depleting, and the colours around you seem dull. Days go by, and you feel like you're chasing time; getting out of your bed feels heavy as if an invisible weight is pushing you down. You feel lonely, yet you don't want anyone around you. The next thing you know, you realise you're far from feeling okay. Your mental health is evidently, utterly, completely unwell.Did you know that mental health problems among Malaysian students are more common than you think?“I was hopeful when I was going through my diploma, and I passed with flying colours; However, things started to feel difficult for me, and I ended up flopping during my degree as I couldn't get out of bed. Even taking a shower feels like a chore,” explains Aizat Roslan, a 23-year-old Accounting student. Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and ADHD, Aizat says he has dealt with this feeling since high school, but it worsened when an unexpected event hits his life. Dania Husna, a student majoring in Psychology, says having mental health problems profoundly affects her studies and overall quality of life. “I was slacking in my studies and submitting my assignments past their due dates, as even the simplest tasks like eating felt so heavy on me to deal with. On top of that, I constantly felt tired, and talking to people could easily drain me out.”Band-aids to Invisible WoundsIt feels like forever, and no matter what you do, it doesn't feel like there is a solution to pull yourself out of that quicksand. Blind optimism can add salt to the wound, but there are certainly ways you can try to ease your mental health problem little by little and cope through your student life. 1. Do What You Love“When it gets too heavy, I will watch youtube and play computer games after doing my assignments,” says Aizat. Ensuring you take time off your studies by filling it with activities you enjoy can help you regulate your emotions.2. Seek Social SupportSpending quality time with others enables you to gain support and strength within interpersonal connections. Sujiyitha, a Psychology alumni from HELP University, shares that she “enjoys spending time with loved ones by going out for movies with them or simply having a nice meal together” heps her feel a lot better during times she is feeling burnt out.”3. Get Enough Sleep Pulling an all-nighter can increase your depressive mood, so you must get enough sleep for your brain to function well the next day. 4. Enhance Study Experience Although going out of your room is the last thing you want to do, being in a new study environment can boost your productivity and enhance your overall mood. Dania mentions that apart from finding a great study environment, she would invite her friends to study together to reinforce her understanding of specific topics.5. Create a Structured Schedule“When I am aware that my plate is heavy with too many unfinished tasks, I begin to list them according to their due dates and then work accordingly so I won't feel overwhelmed,” Sujiyitha shares.6. TherapyWhen all fails, and your poor mental health condition is getting more chronic, going for therapy can be the best solution. Your therapist can help you identify coping methods that suit you and insights on triggers to help you better understand yourself. A Lack Of AccessAlthough going for therapy is the best coping strategy for mental health problems among students, a lack of access to it makes it difficult for students to consider it an option. “I love the therapy sessions that I gained through a local clinic, but the downside is that it's too expensive, which has caused me to decrease the frequency of my visits," Aizat shares. Dania mentions, “Students nowadays are more vocal and self-aware about their mental health issues, but these services could be out of people's budget, and the more affordable centres have an influx of clients coming in which could be hard to accommodate, such as in public hospitals.” Sujiyitha expresses her fair share of frustration about the availability of Malaysia's mental health services. “In my experience, appointments through government health centres are not so frequent when psychotherapy has to be done weekly. In private centres, it's undeniably pricey. Many friends of mine are in desperate need of help, but they cannot afford it, or the access is rather inconvenient, from admission all the way to the waiting period. When one is feeling mentally demotivated, how are they willing to attend an arduous service to get access? They easily lose motivation to seek help in the first place, unless one is privileged enough to gain quick access through costly private therapy centres. But the question is, how many of us here are that privileged?” Some private therapy centres offer cheaper-than-average options, like RELATE Malaysia, Thrive Well, Cara-Cara Mental Fitness and HumanKind Community Counselling, which ranges between RM45-RM80 per session. But, of course, if those options are still way out of your budget as a student, you can opt for the counselling services from your university that’s available, as they're usually free. “I had active therapy sessions that were offered by HELP's CPCS (Centre for Psychological and Counselling Services),” Sujiyitha shares. “Hence, through therapy, I have picked up effective coping mechanisms which I currently take practice off like mindful breathing and a lot of gratitude journaling.”Dealing with mental health issues through student life can be extremely debilitating; but with the right coping strategy and support system, you can find ways to manage the weight and make small progress, one day at a time.(Be gentle on yourself, dear student.)

It Feels Like Forever - Students Speak Up About Their Mental Health Issues

Hello, students sitting for SPM. The mathematics papers are right around the corner, and it’s best to be as fully prepared as possible. So there’s no harm in learning a few helpful tips to help you prepare for your exams.Everyone needs to be as fully prepared as possible for their exam papers, and the mathematics paper is no exception. It's always good to research some studying tips to help you score in your exams. So read on for some handy tricks for you to remember and use effectively during your exams!1. Memorise your formulas! You should always memorise your formulas, even if they are in the examination papers. Despite formula sheets appearing in your exam papers, they will only have most of the basic formulas. Not every formula will be present in your papers. You would not need to refer to the formula sheet provided by memorising your formulas. Also, instead of relying on the formula sheet, you wouldn't need to use it as you remember the formulas you would need to use to answer the tough questions in your exam! This should come in handy when you need to use the right formula but the formula sheet does not have it.2. Time management! Time is minimal during your exam, which is why you need to manage your time wisely while answering your questions. To do this, you might want to consider using this tip. First, try skipping the questions you find pretty difficult to answer. This will help you save time instead of taking too much time to answer one question. Then, once you are done answering all the other questions, you can go back to answer that tricky question. This method is a tried and true method that has helped a lot of people in their exams, and it will certainly help you too.3. If you have questions that you are absolutely uncertain in answering, leave them! Some questions might be too difficult for you to answer during your exam. If you do not know how to answer the question, it’s best to leave them and focus on doing the questions you do know how to answer. It's okay to leave one or two questions unanswered if you really do not know the answer. You can make up for it by making sure you answer the questions that you know how to answer well to get full marks for them!4. Read your questions carefully and ensure that you input the right values into your calculations! Make sure you read and understand the questions carefully to answer the questions correctly. Be sure to use the correct values to avoid making callous mistakes when calculating. For example, you wouldn’t want to calculate area when you wanted to calculate perimeter! Mistakes like these will cost you precious marks and might be the difference in getting the A grade or the B grade.5. Practice, practice, practice! Keep doing past-year and revision papers to stay sharp and ready! The more you practise doing past-year questions, the more prepared you will be when facing real questions during your exam. The more you practice, the more you will be familiarised to the types of questions that you will encounter during your exam. Try doing as many SPM past-year questions as you can so that you will know how to answer those questions in the real exam. Therefore, ensure you practice a lot, so your mind will be sharp, and you will take on the exam questions with ease.Hopefully, these tips will help you during your exam. Dear students, Mathematics Paper 1&2 are just around the corner!

Check out our tips for SPM Maths paper!

Like all the countless years before, SPM starts with the language papers. Most people would have mixed feelings for these papers, especially English. Some might even say that the English paper is one of the hardest, if not the most challenging, in SPM! However, some people might breeze through the paper as if it’s nothing. This is because there is no concrete method to study English. How are you supposed to improve in a language that you speak every day? Well, here are some valuable tips that you might find convenient to help you with your English papers.
1. Don’t just read—understand what you’re reading.
A big part of the English exam consists of comprehension. You cannot just read the passage in the question paper. You have to understand what you are reading to answer the questions correctly. Read the passage a few times over and over if you have to understand the passage's message. Take care not to take too long to read, or you won’t have enough time to write down your answers!
2. Be a grammar Nazi.
To ace your English paper, you have to be very particular about your grammar. Even a minor spelling error or misuse of a word in your essays will cost you precious marks. So be sure to take proper care of your punctuation, sentence structure and overall flow of sentences when writing so that not only do they make sense, but they are grammatically correct as well.
3. Make the dictionary your best friend.
We don’t actually mean you to take a dictionary and study it. However, instead of just reading the dictionary, it can be super helpful to learn new words and their meanings to make use of them while writing your essay. Learning new words and definitions could also help you during those problematic trick questions!
4. Practise writing.
When it comes to writing, the only way to improve your writing is to practice. Only by doing lots and lots of practice will you gradually improve your writing skills. Try doing some past year essay questions and use your pen and paper to write a bunch of different essays. Compare your written answers with some of the given answers and see where you can improve based on your writing. If writing stories is your strong suit, try writing more factual essays and vice versa.
5. Be confident.
Before entering the examination hall, all you can do is be confident. However, with the number of preparations you have made, you should be confident enough to score excellent marks and ace the exam! For more tips on studying for SPM, check out our other articles below!

5 crazy ways to get you into the study mood for SPM

Must know SPM survival tips

Be a biology champion with our SPM tips!

Become a chemistry wizard with these SPM tips!

Check out our tips for SPM Maths paper!

Well, they all come bundled with more than 30 years of experience individually, and are masters of their subjects, which conveniently leads us to our third reason.
Some of the SPMRG Questions Have Appeared in SPMSo, what happens when you get stalwarts, teachers who have so much experience you can see it in their pores, to sit down and churn out questions? COVID 19: Top Student Shares His Journey in International Business and How His Studies are Helping Him Prepare for Life after Graduation

SPM and STPM examinations are getting closer and closer with time which means you need to be prepared to face them! But while revisions and studying are important, so is the food you consume. So, here are 5 healthy AND affordable study snacks!

Fresh Fruits
Fruits are great - they’re pretty, tasty and healthy! Some fruits that are great for the brain include bananas (full of vitamins, potassium and fiber with low salt), oranges (citrus fruit intake may help boost mental performance and improve overall brain function), apples (contain fiber and vitamin C), and blueberries (helps prevent memory loss, increases motor skill function and learning capacity).

Dried fruit
If you feel like you might need a fix of sugar in the middle of the study session, you can prepare some dried fruit snacks for yourself. Since fruit is a natural source of sugars, such an option will definitely satisfy your cravings while remaining on the healthier side.

Dark chocolate
Yup, you read that right! As long as you follow the "everything in moderation" rule, this snack can provide benefits like antioxidants and helps with natural stimulation. Dark chocolate also can help with the production of endorphins, helping you conquer your tasks while boosting your mood. Dark chocolate also contains high flavanol content which improves our memory.

Eggs
Protein is always good for the brain as it helps your brain send messages to the rest of your body, and helps create brain chemicals that improve your mood. And eggs are especially good for the brain when you’re studying. However, you need to eat whole eggs — not just egg whites — to reap their potential brain-function-promoting benefits.

Coffee with milk
A cup of freshly-brewed coffee with some cow’s or plant-based milk won’t be considered brain food for exams but will give you the energy you need. Caffeine will boost your attention, concentration, and motivation, and the milk will give you some protein. Besides, a cup of coffee with milk is usually pretty filling, so you will also feel satisfied and not at all hungry until it is time to have dinner.

Struggling with your SPM preparations?
The team at Afterschool has gathered well-trained teachers from across the education sector with more than 20 years of experience to come up with SPM spot questions so that students like you can benefit. 5 Healthy and Affordable Study Snacks

Just because you failed once does not mean that you will fail the second time or keep on failing. To achieve success, we must create a strategy - including how we are going to overcome SPM repeat papers. Making a strategy will help to reduce the feeling of burden, increase the confidence in your abilities and prevent stress and extreme depression. Even if you have failed once before, remember that failure is not an obstacle to success but an enabler to better success. So, check out our strategies to help you succeed in your repeat exam!1. Prepare a Study ScheduleA study schedule is very important if you want to succeed in your repeat papers. Every relevant aspect must be present - especially rest time, meal time, study time, which subject should be focused on first and so on.Be sure to plan your schedule properly so that your brain does not get too exhausted and there is a balance. If the brain is exhausted, it will not function properly. When the brain shuts down, all the knowledge that is acquired will be lost. Our advice is, in the last few days before the exam, try not to refer to the reference book too much. Just do more exercises and answer more questions. Try to make the reference book only as a last resort when answering questions that you really don’t know the answer to. Try to watch videos related to the chapter you are studying on YouTube to help you better remember facts and help you understand better, especially reading subjects like History. If the subject is Mathematics, watch a video on how to solve math problems. You can practice with them.2. Mentally Prepare Yourself to Enter the Examination HallOn the first day of the exam, you might feel some odd feelings. Chills, stomach aches, cold hands and feet, and worst of all, the brain ceases to function properly. You might also try to remember all of the chapters you have studied but your memory is impaired by an anxiety attack. Which is why you need to make mental preparations for yourself before you enter the examination hall. Our advice? Make a thorough preparation. Make sure to bring your examination slips, identity card, and enough stationery during your examination day. All of this is important so as to not affect your mental wellbeing. 3. Know the Proper Techniques to Answer the Questions CorrectlyThis aspect is the most crucial. This is especially important when answering subjective questions! You need to know the technique of answering the question correctly. The technique is as follows:

Introduction (at the end of the introductory paragraph include a list of facts or a thesis statement)

Facts (content)

Description below each fact

Closing

4. Forget the Details in the BookSo, it’s a few days before the exam, but you did not have enough time to read and study all of the chapters in your textbook. Worry not. Just focus on the important points, then figure out how to elaborate on those points until it makes somewhat sense. That’s pretty much it, really.5. Revise the Questions Several TimesTry not to waste time scanning each chapter from the book. If you have run out of time to master a specific chapter, the only solution is to keep on revising the questions. From there, you can already decipher the format of the questions as well as which topic they might ask in the exam. The textbook is only to be used as a reference if you forget the more important facts. To get some sample questions, check out a YouTube video for it. For example, a Mathematics paper does not really put importance on the question itself, but the method used to answer the question. So, get good at mastering the methods to answer the questions!Another tip from us, try studying the questions. Study the question until you remember, so if the same question comes out in your exam, you will remember better. Finally, good luck to you all. Remember, that the most successful people are the ones who keep failing and bounce back from that and those who are great at managing time! For other related information refer to the articles below: Must Know SPM Survival TipsBe a Biology champion with our SPM tips!Check out our tips for SPM Maths paper!Become a Chemistry wizard with these SPM tips!5 tried-and-tested tips to score straight As in your SPM examsScore in Your English SPM Paper with These Tips!
