10 Emerging Careers Students Should Know About in the Age of AI

So, you're considering studying medicine in Malaysia, but aren't quite sure which path to take? Whether you want to stay local the whole way, head overseas partway through, or get a foreign degree right here at home, this guide will help you explore all the recognised options out there. We&rsquo;ve listed all the major institutions offering medicine and grouped them into three main pathways:<ul><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Local private universities</li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Twinning or credit-transfer programmes</li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Foreign branch campuses in Malaysia</li></ul>Each option includes key information, such as clinical hospital partners and estimated tuition fees, so you don&rsquo;t have to dig for it! <h1>Understanding the Programmes: MBBS and MD</h1>First things first, understanding the programme. Most private medical schools in Malaysia offer either an MBBS or an MD. Both are five-year undergraduate degrees that include pre-clinical studies and clinical training. MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) is the more common title and is awarded by most private universities such as IMU, MAHSA, and Taylor&rsquo;s. MD (Doctor of Medicine) is awarded by some universities instead, often following a similar structure. In Malaysia, it is not a postgraduate degree like in the United States. So why does this matter? Knowing the difference helps you avoid confusion later on, especially if you&rsquo;re planning to work or pursue postgraduate training abroad. It also ensures you&rsquo;re not misled by the title; both degrees carry the same recognition in Malaysia, as long as they&rsquo;re accredited by the Malaysian Medical Council.&nbsp;<h1>Local Private Universities (MBBS/ MD Fully in Malaysia)</h1>These are private institutions where you complete your entire MBBS programme within Malaysia. Clinical years are done in local hospitals (either government or university-affiliated).<div class="table-responsive" style="padding: 20px; background-color: #2e0176; border-radius: 25px;"><table style="min-width: 700px; box-shadow: 0 4px 8px rgba(0,0,0,0.1); border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;"><tbody><tr style="color: white;"><th style="min-width: 150px;">University</th><th>Local Student Tuition Fees (Estimated)</th><th>International Student Tuition Fees (Estimated)</th><th>Clinical Hospitals / Training Sites</th></tr><tr><td>International Medical University (IMU)</td><td>RM 597,500 </td><td>RM 672,500</td><td>Hospital Tuanku Ja&rsquo;afar, Hospital Batu Pahat, others in Negeri Sembilan and Johor</td></tr><tr><td>UCSI University</td><td>RM 420,650 </td><td>RM 501,300</td><td>UCSI Hospital (Springhill), Hospital Tuanku Ja&rsquo;afar</td></tr><tr><td>Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)</td><td>RM 278,250</td><td>Programme Not Available for International Students</td><td>UTAR Hospital (Kampar)</td></tr><tr><td>MAHSA University</td><td>RM 377,650</td><td>RM 449,450</td><td>Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Tanjung Karang, various Klinik Kesihatan</td></tr><tr><td>SEGi University</td><td>RM 339,050</td><td>RM 341,050</td><td>Sibu Hospital (Sarawak)</td></tr><tr><td>AIMST University</td><td>RM 319,850</td><td>RM 386,850</td><td>Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Kuala Lumpur</td></tr><tr><td>Taylor&rsquo;s University</td><td>RM 422,690</td><td>USD 106,264</td><td>Hospital Sungai Buloh, Hospital Bentong, Hospital Muadzam Shah, Hospital Kuala Kangsar, Klinik Kesihatan Rawang and others</td></tr><tr><td>Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM)</td><td>RM 375,000</td><td>USD 90,000</td><td>Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (Kuantan), Pekan Hospital, Clinics under the Ministry of Health (KKM)</td></tr><tr><td>MSU &ndash; International Medical School (IMS)</td><td>RM 295,000 - RM 395,000</td><td>RM 546,000</td><td>Hospital Shah Alam, Hospital Sungai Buloh, and Hospital Klang</td></tr><tr><td>Quest International University (QIU)</td><td>RM 330,000</td><td>RM 330,000</td><td>Perak General Hospitals, such as GH Ipoh, Taiping, Teluk Intan, Bahagia, and government clinics, as well</td></tr><tr><td>Widad University College</td><td>RM 320,000</td><td>RM 394,750</td><td>Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan Kuantan,&nbsp;</td></tr><tr><td>University of Cyberjaya</td><td>RM 350,000&nbsp;</td><td>RM 380,000</td><td>Putrajaya Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Serdang Hospital, and Cyberjaya Hospital</td></tr><tr><td>UniSHAMS</td><td>RM 255,260</td><td>RM 305,206</td><td>Kulim Hospital, Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, and Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah</td></tr><tr><td>Sunway University, in partnership with UKM</td><td>RM 471,000</td><td>RM 471,000</td><td>Sunway Medical Centre</td></tr><tr><td>Lincoln University College</td><td>RM 315,000</td><td>&nbsp;</td><td>&nbsp;</td></tr></tbody></table></div> All these programmes are MMC-accredited, meaning graduates are eligible to register with the Malaysian Medical Council and begin their housemanship training in local hospitals.&nbsp; When exploring medical study options, it&rsquo;s important to consider where you&rsquo;ll be placed for clinical training. These placements (often lasting up to three years) play a major role in shaping your practical experience, exposure to real-world cases, and future job prospects.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h1>Twinning or Credit Transfer Programmes</h1>This pathway allows you to begin your degree in Malaysia and then complete it overseas. Certification is awarded by the partner university where students complete their degree. Many graduates go on to do their housemanship in their respective countries, which can improve their chances of securing work there, though this depends on local policies and is not guaranteed.&nbsp; Alternatively, most programmes are MMC-accredited (with a few exceptions), allowing students to return to Malaysia for housemanship if they choose. Visit MMC&rsquo;s official website for the official list of recognised institutions. For MSU&rsquo;s twinning programme with its Bangalore campus, students complete Phase 1 in Malaysia over a period of two years, followed by Phase 2 in Bangalore over a three-year period.&nbsp; Graduates are required to return to Malaysia for their housemanship. <h1>Foreign Medical Branch Campuses in Malaysia</h1>These are Malaysian campuses of international medical schools. You complete your entire degree in Malaysia but graduate with a foreign qualification.<div class="table-responsive"><table style="min-width: 700px;"><tbody><tr><th style="min-width: 150px;">University</th><th>Parent University Country</th><th>Local Student Tuition Fees (Estimated)</th><th>International Student Tuition Fees (Estimated)</th><th>Clinical Hospitals in Malaysia</th></tr><tr><td>Monash University Malaysia</td><td>Australia</td><td>RM 571,200</td><td>RM 674,400</td><td>Hospital Sultanah Aminah (Johor Bahru), Hospital Sultan Ismail</td></tr><tr><td>Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed)</td><td>UK</td><td>RM 503,000</td><td>RM 632,500</td><td>Hospital Sultan Ismail, Hospital Enche&rsquo; Besar Hajjah Khalsom</td></tr><tr><td>RCSI &amp; UCD Malaysia Campus</td><td>Ireland</td><td>RM 620,000</td><td>RM 740,000</td><td>Hospital Pulau Pinang, Seberang Jaya, Bukit Mertajam, Taiping</td></tr></tbody></table></div> All three institutions listed above are accredited by their respective foreign medical councils:<ul><li aria-level="1">Monash University Malaysia &ndash; accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) </li></ul><ul><li aria-level="1">Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed) &ndash; accredited by the General Medical Council (GMC) </li></ul><ul><li aria-level="1">RCSI &amp; UCD Malaysia Campus &ndash; accredited by the Irish Medical Council (IMC) </li></ul>This means that graduates are eligible to pursue housemanship and apply for medical registration in Australia, the UK, or Ireland, depending on local licensing requirements. At the same time, all three programs are fully recognised by the MMC, ensuring that students can complete their housemanship in Malaysia and register as doctors locally. <h1>Final Notes</h1>Choosing the right medical pathway isn&rsquo;t just about cost or location; it&rsquo;s about finding the best fit for your future. Whether you're aiming to practice in Malaysia or abroad, this guide highlights the key factors every student and parent should consider: accreditation, clinical training, total cost, and global recognition. As you narrow down your options, remember that your clinical years will shape much of your hands-on experience. Where you&rsquo;re placed can influence the cases you see, the mentors you meet, and ultimately, the doctor you become. Take the time to ask the right questions, compare each route carefully, and stay informed. Medicine is a long journey, so starting with the right foundation makes all the difference.

How are bright futures formed?&nbsp; The foundation for an empowering tomorrow often lies in the small yet transformative moments of learning and growth. Ashley Loh came to this pivotal realisation early, during a short stint working at a childcare centre. Amidst the laughter, boundless curiosity and inspiring creativity, Ashley understood the transformative power of education.<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b8353aea62e_1740125498.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="294" />Today, Ashley works as a special needs educator, dedicating her livelihood to supporting children with autism, ADHD and other learning differences. Her role in the classroom goes far beyond teaching: it's about creating safe spaces where children can flourish and discover their unique potential. From navigating a psychology degree to unveiling the fulfilment that comes with helping the differently abled, Ashley&rsquo;s journey is a poignant reminder of the beauty that finding meaning in unexpected places and embracing the hardships helping others can bring.Discovering a Passion for Working with ChildrenAshley&rsquo;s passion for working with children bloomed early in her life. Before going to university, Ashley had the opportunity to work at a childcare centre for two months, an experience that left a profound impact. &ldquo;I knew I liked communicating with kids,&rdquo; Ashley recalled. &ldquo; These formative years are where we grow and change the most, so it was fascinating to see how simple things, like words, are learnt for the first time.&rdquo; What struck Ashley most during this period was the joy that children bring into the world, a quality that often diminishes as people get older. &ldquo; There&rsquo;s so much joy that kids have. It&rsquo;s something we lose as adults, but being around them reminded me of how exciting it is to learn and discover things for the first time.&rdquo; For Ashley, there was a unique magic in the early years of a child&rsquo;s life: the rapid growth, the excitement for life and the endless possibilities for potential. It was here, in those moments of shared discovery, that she realised how fulfilling it could be to play a role in their learning journey. &ldquo;I loved seeing how they changed and grew. It&rsquo;s amazing to be even a small part of that.&rdquo;Ashley&rsquo;s short-lived experience at the childcare centre planted the seed for her future, sparking a sincere interest in child development that would mould her life and career.Finding PsychologyPursuing a degree in Psychology wasn't always part of Ashley's plan. She initially had her eyes set on studying the arts, unsure of what she truly wanted to do. But it was a psychology course she took during college that captured her imagination. &ldquo; It was the most interesting subject I had because it talked about experiments and how people work,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I realised I really love learning about people.&rdquo;<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b8361444a1f_1740125716.png" alt="" width="560" height="457" />Ashley's passion for the human mind stems from her love for biology, her favourite subject in secondary school. &ldquo;I loved learning how the body works, and psychology felt like the next step: understanding how the mind works,&rdquo; she explained. Fascinated by the connection between physical processes and mental behaviour, combined with the support of her parents, Ashley was driven to explore the field.&nbsp; While Ashley was still uncertain about her career path, there was always one certainty about her future: she wanted to work with people. &ldquo;I wasn&rsquo;t planning every detail, but I knew I wanted to understand people&mdash;and that&rsquo;s why I was sure about Psychology.&rdquo;Shaping her Path with The University of Nottingham&nbsp; After completing her AUSMAT at Sunway College, Ashley chose to pursue her degree at The University of Nottingham Malaysia for its strong psychology programme and well-designed campus, which felt like the right environment to embark on the next stage of her studies.&nbsp; The early days of her degree coincided with the pandemic, which meant online classes and limited interaction with peers. &ldquo; It was really hard,&rdquo; Ashley recalled. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m very extroverted, so being stuck at home and not meeting people was tough. Even group projects felt impersonal; we were just talking on microphones without seeing each other&rsquo;s faces.&rdquo; Yet, the isolation she felt during this period marked a significant turning point.&nbsp;Being locked in and closed off from the world for so long left Ashley longing for a new adventure. This desire was soon satiated when she participated in an exchange programme at the Univerity of Nottingham UK campus. The programme became a defining moment in her university life, offering her the chance to build new connections and rediscover her confidence. &ldquo; The exchange taught me so much about being independent and navigating new environments. It&rsquo;s one of my core memories from university."Among her most memorable modules were those on autism and memory, areas that piqued her interest in further understanding human behaviour. For her final year project, Ashley centred her research around autobiographical memory, diving into how past experiences play a significant role in our perception of the future. She credited her professor, Steve Jensen, for formulating an enriching learning experience. &ldquo; He was amazing. He specialised in memory and guided us so well, from weekly progress meetings to explaining concepts in a way that just clicked.&rdquo;Embracing both the hardships and exciting opportunities her time at Nottingham presented, Ashley not only shaped her academic interests but also created avenues for personal growth, providing much-needed clarity for the career she wanted to pursue. From Academia to a Career in Special Needs EducationThe path to becoming a special needs educator was carved with both intention and conviction. In the classroom, subjects relating to special needs and autism captured her attention beyond surface-level intrigue; it was in these moments of deep captivation that the seed of assuming the virtuous role was first planted. &nbsp;&ldquo;I wanted to do something meaningful and hands-on. I realised that a traditional desk job doesn't appeal to me."<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b837a596738_1740126117.png" alt="" width="560" height="846" />Beyond the lecture halls, long and thoughtful conversations with peers who had experience working with the differently-abled further helped her explore and understand her aspirations. &ldquo;A lot of my classmates had experiences in this area and shared their stories: both the challenges and the rewards,&rdquo; Ashley explained. These accounts, combined with her understanding of and inherent interest in the necessary theory, gave her the confidence to pursue a career path that would intimidate many.Today, Ashley works as a teacher at Brain Connection, a learning centre in Petaling Jaya dedicated to providing an attentive and thoughtful educational experience to children and teenagers with special needs. This opportunity has helped her unveil many profound insights about the profession and, more importantly, herself. &nbsp;"I&rsquo;ve learned how hard it is to be a parent. The sheer amount of patience, diligence and love required to raise a child with unique needs are quite moving.&rdquo; She also noted the importance of celebrating small victories. &ldquo;Even the tiniest milestones, like learning a new word or expressing an emotion, feel huge. Those moments of fulfilment outweigh the difficulties.&rdquo; As any good educator, Ashley has found value in her students&rsquo; unique strengths and learning preferences. &ldquo;Every child is different, and that&rsquo;s what makes the work so rewarding: you&rsquo;re constantly learning how to adapt and connect with each of them in their own way.&rdquo; Every student in Ashley&rsquo;s classroom represents a distinctive area for fulfilment in her heart, all contributing in their own ways to what makes this job worth doing.&nbsp;Looking Ahead and AdviceAshley&rsquo;s dedication to supporting children with special needs on their educational journeys remains unwavering. Whether through building her skills in education, deepening her knowledge in psychology, or expanding her reach, she will continue to trek a path that is as righteous as it is fulfilling. While Ashley acknowledges the difficulties that come with her job, she recognises the gratification that struggle can often bring with it. &ldquo;Every experience, even the difficult ones, has taught me something valuable,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo; It&rsquo;s not always easy, but the rewards make it all worthwhile.&rdquo;<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b8380ae6bf2_1740126218.png" alt="" width="560" height="416" />To those considering a similar path, Ashley has some words of encouragement: &ldquo; It&rsquo;s okay not to have everything figured out right away. What&rsquo;s important is to stay open to the journey and trust in the process.&rdquo; In a life covered in uncertainties (as all are), one thing is certain for Ashley: she will tenaciously commit to improving the lives of her students and their families, one milestone at a time.

Guiding Growth: Ashley Loh’s Path to Becoming A Special Needs Educator

As we step into 2025, the landscape of higher education continues to evolve, driven by technological advancements, changing societal needs, and innovative approaches to learning. For students, keeping up with these changes is not just beneficial, but essential! Here are the top trends to watch and adopt in the new year.<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b831c8d7c7f_1740124616.jpg" alt="" width="560" height="396" />1. Microlearning for Maximum ImpactIn a world of short attention spans, microlearning has emerged as a highly effective way to grasp complex concepts. Instead of sitting through long lectures or cramming for hours, microlearning breaks information into bite-sized modules that are easier to digest. Platforms like Coursera and Udemy offer micro-courses tailored for busy schedules, making it easier to progressively build skills. To incorporate microlearning into your routine, try dedicating 10&ndash;15 minutes daily to learning a specific topic. Tools such as flashcards, quizzes, and short video lessons can enhance your retention and help you stay consistent without feeling overwhelmed.2. AI as a Learning AssistantArtificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept; it is now a cornerstone of modern education. Tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Quizlet have transformed how students research, write, and study. AI can help generate essay drafts, simplify complex topics, and even create personalised study plans based on your learning style.<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b8324e87f68_1740124750.png" alt="" width="560" height="439" />In 2025, students who leverage AI tools will have a competitive edge. However, it is important to remember that AI works best as a collaborator, not a crutch. Use it to enhance your work, but don&rsquo;t rely on it entirely: critical thinking and creativity remain invaluable skills.3. Collaborative Learning in the Virtual SpaceWhile traditional group projects remain a staple of higher education, virtual collaboration is taking centre stage. Tools like Miro, Slack, and Microsoft Teams allow students to collaborate on projects seamlessly, regardless of location.Participating in online forums, attending virtual study groups, or contributing to global student projects can enrich your academic experience. These platforms not only teach teamwork but also prepare you for the increasingly remote nature of modern workplaces.4. Personalised Learning PathwaysGone are the days of one-size-fits-all education. In 2025, students have more options than ever to tailor their learning journeys. Universities are adopting adaptive learning platforms, which use data to identify a student&rsquo;s strengths and weaknesses, providing customised resources and assignments. For students, this means fewer hours spent on repetitive tasks and more time focusing on areas where improvement is needed. Consider seeking out courses or programmes that offer adaptive learning options, allowing you to maximise your potential.5. Sustainability in EducationSustainability is no longer just a buzzword, it is a priority. Universities worldwide are embedding sustainable practices into their curricula and operations, from green campuses to climate-focused degree programmes. Taking courses on environmental science or sustainable business practices can also equip you with knowledge that aligns with the global push for a greener future.&nbsp;Students can embrace this trend by participating in eco-friendly initiatives, such as recycling drives, energy conservation programmes, or sustainability-focused student organisations.<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/67b8328b737c4_1740124811.png" alt="" width="560" height="377" />6. Gamification of LearningEducation doesn&rsquo;t have to be dull. By incorporating game-like elements such as points, levels, and rewards, learning platforms make studying more engaging and interactive. Tools such as Kahoot!, Duolingo, and Quizizz bring fun to learning while helping you stay motivated. If you are struggling with a particular subject, explore gamified apps or challenges. Not only will you enjoy the process, but you will likely retain more information along the way.7. Lifelong Learning as a MindsetIn 2025, education isn&rsquo;t just confined to classrooms or the university years. Lifelong learning has become a vital mindset in a rapidly evolving job market. With access to online courses, certifications, and professional development programmes, students can continue expanding their skill sets long after graduation.Adopting a lifelong learning mentality now can set the foundation for ongoing personal and professional growth. Platforms such as LinkedIn Learning, Skillshare, and Udemy make it easier than ever to stay ahead in your field. As we embrace 2025, the future of education is brimming with possibilities. By adopting these academic trends&mdash;whether it is integrating AI tools, prioritising mental health, or exploring sustainability&mdash;students can enhance their learning experiences and prepare themselves for success in a rapidly changing world.Education is no longer about rigid curricula or outdated study habits; it is about adaptability, curiosity, and making the most of innovative tools and opportunities. Commit to embracing these trends this year and take your academic journey to new heights.
