Malaysia is a place that is filled with job opportunities for those who have graduated university, even those who are not local. If you’re thinking of staying in Malaysia to work, there are a couple of fields where workers are in high demand. This line of thought might even influence what course you decide to do as well! Let us tell you what careers are in high demand so that you can make the best decision now, for your future.

Accounting
With Malaysia wanting to reach developed nation status by the year 2020, it is estimated that we will need about 60,000 accountants. To make sense of how many accountants are needed, Malaysia only had a little over half that amount in 2017, which mean we need just about 30,000 accountants! Whether it’s working for the ‘Big Four’ or for smaller companies, accountants are in dire need everywhere around Malaysia. There are many ways to study accountancy in Malaysia. Besides doing an obvious Degree in Accounting (which will usually be coupled with finance or business), you can also choose to take professional papers like the Certified Accounting Technician CAT, which leads up to the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) papers, which is taken and accepted worldwide.Accountant entry-level salary - RM2,100 (USD500)

ICT
The field of Information and Communication Technology is one which is booming considering the technological advances of Malaysia as it tries to step into becoming more of a developed nation. For the 11th Malaysia Plan, which is the government’s plan for 2016-2020, things like data sharing through the cloud and making government services available online is given emphasis on. There are even plans to utilise ICT in the education system.Under the umbrella of ICT are different degrees like computer science, computer engineering and even gaming technology. It’s up to you to decide which part of ICT you’re interested in exactly.ICT entry-level salary- RM2,600 (USD630)

Occupational safety and health
This job is certainly one that your parents wouldn’t have talked about, but it should be! A health and safety officer would be one who ensures the safety of workers who are usually working in dangerous places like construction or building sites. This job is in high demand in Malaysia as there are many mega projects that are going on but not enough health and safety officers to go around- in fact, at least 9000 are needed all around the country. There are currently just under 6000 registered officers, and less than half of that number are active.Rest assured that by choosing this course, there will be job opportunities wide open for you in Malaysia as health and safety officers are much needed.Health and safety officer entry-level salary- RM3000 (USD720)

Engineering
There are so many kinds of engineering you can choose to delve into- civil engineering, software engineering, chemical engineering, electrical & electronic engineering… the list goes on! Malaysia is in dire need of engineers- around 200,000 are needed by the year 2020 to fulfil the need in all the sectors listed above and beyond. As of 2017, we only had 70,000.To choose an engineering course, one would have to take science and math subjects in high school as they are usually requirements to get enrolled into the course.Engineering entry-level salary- RM2400 (USD580)

Medicine
One of the oldest professions, medicine and its practitioners have been around for decades. Because it is so hard to be a doctor, what with needing to study for so long and having to do a long housemanship after, many people are opting for other careers, resulting in only 7000 specialist doctors in all of Malaysia. Before you can choose to specialise when you’re doing your Master’s degree, your Bachelor’s degree will take you five years to complete, so you have plenty of time to learn the ropes of every field and figure out what you’re most passionate about. However, with medicine being a field where someone’s life is at your literal fingertips, don’t expect the course to be a walk in the park. However, for those who are passionate about the field, it is well worth it.Medicine entry-level salary- RM3500 (USD850)

Education
Education in Malaysia can be split into so many different fields, such as preschool, primary or secondary school, but what is needed in Malaysia are university-level educators. Now, to be a lecturer, many universities require a Master’s degree or a PhD to teach a subject.Of course, if you’re not thinking of lecturing, there are also opportunities for you to teach young children or even special-needs children.Education entry-level salary- RM2400 (USD580)
There you have it, some of the many critical occupations that are needed for Malaysia. However, if you’re passionate about something that isn’t on the list, just go for it anyway! Don’t be afraid to pick something you like over what you ‘should’ do, and who knows, you might find a way to work in those fields in Malaysia after you’re done studying too!Thinking of studying one of these fields, or other ones, in Malaysia? In-Demand Jobs in Malaysia for International Students

You’ve unpacked your things, gone through orientation and maybe made a friend or two. Welcome to the next couple of years of your life… but, what happens next? A foreign country can be scary at first, what with the new languages and the many races that can be found in Malaysia. It’s tempting to just shy away from it all and stick to going straight back home after classes, but Malaysia has a whole lot more to offer than just that! Here are a few go-tos for other international students in the country who want to let off some steam from all their studying!

1. Shopping malls
Sunway Pyramid, a mall with a skating rink! - Image from GoWhere MalaysiaAcross Malaysia, there are 560 shopping malls, and it’s estimated that we’ll have close to 700 malls by the end of next year! Most malls in the Klang Valley are usually located close to a train station, and most public transport in major cities will take you within walking distance to a nearby mall.Jacklyn Soetjipto, an Indonesian student here, tells us that she only goes to places that are easily accessible by public transport- which means lots of days at the mall! “I go to Pavilion a lot because it’s easy to go to. Grab is a bit expensive, so I usually take the LRT.”Big malls like the one Jacklyn mentioned, The Curve and Mid Valley are all easily accessible and are usually jam packed with places like a cinema, a bowling alley and an arcade- One Utama has all three! If you’re adventurous, some malls even have rock climbing (One Utama), archery (Sunway Pyramid) and ice skating rinks (IOI City Mall)!

2. The great outdoors
The view from Broga Hill. - Image from FlickrIf malls are not your speed and you’d rather spend time reconnecting with Mother Nature, Malaysia is a great place to do so. Despite most colleges and universities being in the city, one doesn’t need to go far to find somewhere to hike or to simply just take a walk in the lush greenery that Malaysia has to offer.Canadian student Zak Cunningham is big on marathons and running. “I spend a lot of time hiking and running outdoors. I really enjoy spending time with my friends in Malaysia and going out and doing activities with them.”Much frequented hiking trails include Gasing Hill, Broga Hill (go early for the sunrise!) and Tabur Hill- both the east and west trails. If you’re looking for something a little more leisurely, the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) or any national park across the nation are all nice places to lace up and walk around at.

3. With one of the most popular foods here, Penang laksa, being on CNN’s top 10 best foods, our food is somewhat of a national treasure. One just has to visit a night market to savour our char kway teow (fried flat rice noodles with cockles and prawn), apam balik (pancake with cream corn and peanuts) and lok lok (boiled meat or veggies on a stick). However, if you’re feeling a little homesick, there’s a lot of food here that might just remind you of home. With Malaysia being a melting pot of culture, a lot of the international food here is prepared by people who are actually from that country.Kalista* from Bangladesh says it best. “I like all cuisines! There is really good Lebanese food in Bukit Bintang, and a good place in Sunway called Star Kebab that’s nice.” She also enjoys the mamak, which is Indian Muslim cuisine that famed for being cheap, accessible at all hours and yummy to boot!

4. In terms of what Mother Nature has given us, the Batu Caves is a must-see- a huge limestone hill with a number of caves in it. The temple there is one of the most popular Hindu temples outside India, and is lead up to by 272 steps.Malaysia also has lots of natural islands! From Pulau Tioman to Pulau Perhentian, island hopping should definitely be on your list of activities. “During the sem break, my Indonesian friends and I will rent a car and go to different states, different islands. We just have to request for our driver’s license to be changed to an international license,” tells Frisca Simbolon, a 21-year-old Indonesian student here.Besides our natural wonders, there is also man-made infrastructure. Everyone knows about KLCC, which stands for the Kuala Lumpur City Centre- comprising of a mall, a aquarium, an orchestra hall, office buildings, a convention centre and so much more! It is the tallest twin building in the world and used to be the tallest building in the world.Malaysia is a country rich with culture, sights and of course, great food! Focusing on your studies is great- but taking time off to have a look-see around this country that you’re calling home for the next few years of your life is definitely worth your time. Best Places to Eat Around Uni in Malaysian Student Cities

By now, the world now knows Kuala Lumpur to be one of the premier hubs for international students looking for quality education. Noting an ideal combination of your cheaper-than-the-usual fees coupled with institutions that offer qualify education, the city stacked with byzantine streets is not alone when it comes to the killer combo students around the world crave for. Better known public universities such as University Malaya, complimented by the world class universities that have set up shop here in the form of branch campuses, create a melting pot, not just of food and culture, but one of educational excellence. Perhaps someone looking towards Malaysia with a foreign set of eyes may not look past Kuala Lumpur, when in actual fact, many of Malaysia’s 14 states and federal territories possess all the necessary ingredients to tip the scales in their favour when a student is looking for a city that would be conform to their educational and financial needs. Let us dive a little deeper into the cities in Malaysia, and construct our very own countdown of the 5 best student cities/states Malaysia has to offer!
EduCity, Johor
Located in the South most portion of the country, the region which tails off into the sea is located in a state that is wildly popular due to its close proximity to the neighbouring Singapore. As far as first impressions go, a city which has the prefix of edu- definitely gets it right. While it would be a shame if it was all talk and no bite, any potential student can rest assured knowing Educity is packed with private instiutions and branch campuses of the highest prestige, who offer a variety of courses to choose from, ranging from management all the way to medicine. These institutions include:

Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia

Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology

Raffles University Iskandar

University of Southampton Malaysia Campus

University of Reading Malaysia

Marlborough College Malaysia

Management Development Institute of Singapore

Raffles American School

Multimedia University

It would then come so no surprise then, that the idea for the city when it was in its initial stages of planning, was to be an education hub to accommodate the growing demand for robust options of academia with great depth, something EduCity has and continually strives to maintain. Supplementing the campuses are R&D centres, student accommodations, as well as recreational and sports facilities. The first of its kind in Asia, Educity in Johor makes it onto our list because of its pioneering vision in creating a hub within a hub, and succeeding in moulding a safe haven for its students to thrive and excel on a grand scale.
Selangor, Malaysia
While KL used to be far and away the number one destination, being synonymous with the poster child of Malaysian education destinations, Selangor has never been too far behind, always pushing its way towards the front of the pack and now, agonisingly close to disposing KL as the numero uno city for students. Whisper it quietly, but within some circles, they may already have done so. A combination of the innovation and financial injections both of a large scale has seen the sprouting of a number of institutions whose brands are known around the worldUniversities and colleges found in Selangor include:

Binary Universtiy College of Management & Entrepreneurship (BUCME)

HELP International College of Technology (HICT)

Institute Advertising Communication Training (IACT)

INTI College Subang Jaya

KBU University

KDU College

Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College

Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT)

Lincoln College

Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST)

Management & Science University (MSU)

Monash University Malaysia (MUSM)

Multimedia University (MMU)

New Era College

Olympia College Petaling Jaya

PJ College of Art and Design

PTPL College

SAE Institute of Audio Engineering

SEGi University College

Stamford College

Sunway University College

Taylor’s College

The One Academy of Communication Design

The Otomotif College (TOC)

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNIM)

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)

Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM)

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)

Westminster International College

Kolej Teknologi Paramount

Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor (KUIS)

Kolej WIT

Malaysian Institute of Baking (MIB)

The Association of Business Executives (ABE)

Vision College

.Leading the charge is undoubtedly Petaling Jaya, or PJ as it is fondly known. The gem has all the hallmarks of a model student city, with numerous 5-star institutions and even more high-rise buildings, many of which easily serve as student accommodation. The final layer of this education tiramisu is of course the close proximity in which all these factors intertwine together to work seamlessly.
Penang, Malaysia
Image via catchthatbus.comThe Pearl of The Orient wasn’t merely given its nickname for kicks, oh no. Better known as a tourist hotspot due to its uncanny ability to combine the modernisation of a city with the breath-taking views and locales of an unspoiled island. For students who are torn between trotting the globe to fulfil their wander lust fantasies and studying to earn a degree, the perfect choice could not be more obvious. Universities are peppered all around Penang, with the main draw of course being the institutions that are deeply engrained in the field of education with a wealth of experience, who also chose Penang as a location for another one of their campuses. Some of them include:

Allianze College of Medical Sciences (ACMS)

DISTED College

Han Chiang College

INTI International College Penang

Olympia College Penang

SEGi College, Pulau Pinang

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

ATC College

Kolej Antarabangsa Excelpolitan

Kolej Excel

Kolej Kejururawatan Adventist

Penang Medical College

Silicon Institute of Technology

Tunku Abdul Rahman College (Caw. Penang)

Wawasan Open University (WOU)

On nights and weekends however, the city can be viewed through a different set of eyes, as the attention then shifts to the captivating islands and seas, or the remarkably preserved culture of yesteryear found exploring one of the many narrow and captivating streets. Why trade the hustle and bustle of the city for the sanctuary of nature and culture, when you can have both?
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Image via kualalumpur-wsThe first name that comes to mind when people think about education in Malaysia is without a doubt, Kuala Lumpur. The city has been at the forefront of everything good in the country for decades, even being named the most affordable student city by QS World University Rankings. Treading the fine-line between maintaining high quality education at affordable prices for students has never been a task for the faint hearted, more so in the current economic climate. Kuala Lumpur though has made the tight-rope walk with unassuming ease, adding more and more Universities that would qualify as rock-stars on the educational stage, to their already burgeoning staple of institutions. Some of these include:

Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT)

Asia Pacific University College of Technology & Innovation (UCTI)

Asia-Europe Institute, University of Malaya

FTMS College

HELP University College

Institut FMM

International College of Music (ICOM)

International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

Malvern International Academy

Kolej Antarabangsa Travex

Kolej ATC

Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College (KLMU)

MAHSA University College

Malaysia-France University Centre (MFUC)

Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA)

Methodist College Kuala Lumpur

Multimedia College

Olympia College Kuala Lumpur

Open University Malaysia (OUM)

SEGi College, Kuala Lumpur

Stamford Management Centre

TPM College

UCSI University

Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)

Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR)

University of Malaya (UM)

Institut Megatech

Institut Mentari

Nirwana Education Group

Institut Pengurusan Malaysia (MIM)

Kolej Bandar

Kolej Brickfields Asia

Kolej Gemilang

President College

Kolej Teknologi Antarabangsa Cybernetics (KTAC)

Kolej Teknologi Geomatika

Kolej Unikop

Legend International School of Hospitality & Tourism

Liverpool John Moores University

Mantissa Institute

Reliance College

RIMA College Kuala Lumpur

Taylor’s College, Sri Hartamas

Tunku Abdul Rahman College

Victoria International College (Kuala Lumpur)

Most notable home to the nation’s number one university, UM, KL also manages to keep everything in a compact and clean package, with the public transportation avenues of electronic trains, buses, taxis supplemented by the booming Grab and Uber contributors leave students with a multitude of options when choosing a method of going from point A to B.

Public Transport Routes in Malaysia

Arguably, the most important arrangement a student who's about to kick-off their studies in a foreign country needs to make is accommodation. It always pays to do your research, and here we have compiled the most popular choices students from abroad have made in the past, and a rough estimate of the cost so you’ll walk in knowing what to expect.
House
This option is less popular due to the fact that A) a house will require constant maintenance and upkeep; and B) It’s usually more expensive, even if it comes with larger space. However, for those who aren’t deterred, then these are the prices you may come to expect in and around Kuala Lumpur & Petaling Jaya. A double-storey house would contain around 4-6 rooms and would cost anywhere between RM2000 – RM2,500. Now, if you’re bad with maths, then this equates to around RM400 – RM500+ per room. If you’re worried about finding 4-5 other people to move in with, remember that the areas around universities are filled with students such as yourself, local and foreign. There are bound to be single rooms available in the vent one person moves out or, you’ll be able to find 4-5 other people in your class/institution and then proceed to get a place together. Do note that your initial payment would be hefty, as many follow the 1+1+0.5 rule. This essentially means you’ll pay a 1-month deposit, 1-month advance, and an added half-a-month payment for utilities. Some places charge more, sometimes requiring 2+1+0.5 or even 3+1+0.5, while others don’t require any deposit at all. Please remember that this is at the behest of the landlord/lady. Also, never forget to obtain proper documentation of any payments made for future proof in the event anything untoward happens.

Condominium apartment
Apartments and university/college students go hand in hand like bread and butter. Taking it a closer look, it’s obvious why that is. An apartment provides students with exactly the type of room they need, not too large nor too small. Add in a pool to the mix, and maybe even a gym, and you have yourself a match made in heaven. The prices for these units will also vary depending on the exact location, as usual. Renting an entire apartment for a single person can be a little expensive if your budget is around below RM2.5k. The cost depends on the number of bedrooms in each apartment. One with 3 bedrooms would cost around RM1300 – RM2000 total, meaning RM400 – RM680 per person. One with 4 bedrooms would amount to around RM2000-2500, adjusting the range to around RM500 – RM625/person.

Studio Apartment
The new up and comer in the accommodation equation is the dream of many a student. The perfect size, so that you don’t have to feel bad when you can’t fill up the excessive space in your house/condo with bells and whistles. With studio apartments really meant for only one person per unit, or perhaps two if you’re all right sharing everything with the other party. Expect to pay between RM1000 – RM 2000 for a nice unit.Do note that your initial payment would be hefty, as many follow the 1+1+0.5 rule. This essentially means you’ll pay a 1-month deposit, 1-month advance, and an added half- a-month payment for utilities.

University Assigned/Recommended Accommodation
Arguably the most popular option among the options available, many modern Malaysian universities have their own hostels/apartments for the students to move into, either on-campus or a mere stone's throw away. By and large, these units come fully stocked with the necessities such as furniture, WiFi, air conditioning, as well as amenities such as gyms ad cafeterias, all the while being strategically located close by modes of public transport and other attractions. The only downside perhaps to this option would be A) You may not be able to personalise your room as much as you would and B) You must book these rooms in advance, way before the semester begins or expect them to have no rooms available for another 6 months at the very least. The deposits vary, and will usually include a processing fee. On occasion, universities charge rent quarterly (every 3 months). Therefore, while your deposit may only be a month, your first-time payment would be 1+3+Processing Fee.
