The courageous first step into the unknown is the very same one toward growth. Evelyn Ramli began her journey striding into the unfamiliar world of content creation amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. What was intended to be a simple outlet for creativity would eventually blossom into a thriving platform, accumulating over 65K followers across TikTok and Instagram. Through her exploration of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle in her videos, Evelyn has dedicated countless hours to captivating millions of viewers across the world.Yet, the same willingness to embrace the unknown has propelled her even further, leading her to Indonesia, where she assumes roles as both a marketing specialist and a teacher. Deviating from the lucrative career path she has worked tirelessly to build as a content creator, Evelyn strives to search for personal fulfilment. With zero formal background in marketing and welcoming a world of uncertainties ahead, Evelyn’s story is a testament to the growth that comes when we dare to push beyond the familiar.Childhood: Finding a Home in UnfamiliarityEvelyn’s early life was marked by movement, adaptation, and a search for belonging. Born to Indonesian roots, Evelyn spent her first few years in Jakarta before moving to Qatar, where she often felt like an outsider. “I didn’t know a lot of people there. I was pretty much the only Asian,” she remembers. With these feelings of displacement and alienation, books became Evelyn’s sanctuary, igniting a lifelong passion for reading and storytelling. “I found a lot of comfort in reading rather than talking to people who weren’t always kind to me.” At age 12, Evelyn’s family moved to Malaysia, further underscoring the ever-nomadic nature of her life. She spent her adolescent years assimilating to yet another culture, navigating primary and secondary school in a foreign environment. Grappling with the challenges of fitting in, Evelyn found solace in creative pursuits that allowed her to express herself in ways she couldn't always do socially. Her passion for writing solidified early on, initially inspired by a teacher who complimented one of her short stories. “He was so specific about the parts he liked, and I remember being so touched. It made me think, maybe I could be a writer.” Through the accumulation of moments like these, she understood the gratification that creation and creativity brought her. From Lockdown Creativity to Campus ConfidenceWhen the pandemic hit, the world grounded to a halt. Like many others, Evelyn sought a way to channel her creativity amidst the immense restrictions of the lockdowns. “I started making videos as a way to pass the time,” she recalls. In the beginning, Evelyn dedicated herself to posting up to four videos a day, experimenting with different niches and honing her skills through trial and error. As Evelyn’s understanding of her niche and the art of video-making grew, so did her audience. “At first, I didn’t understand the numbers. I saw the views and the followers, but I never connected them to real people. Evelyn recalls the first time she was approached at university as “weird, amazing, and intimidating.” When pandemic restrictions eased, campus life at The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNMC) opened new doors for Evelyn’s personal and academic growth. She naturally pursued a degree in English Literature, a decision rooted in both her passion for the subject and her appreciation for the university’s serene campus. “The location felt perfect. I loved the nature, the lake, and the calm environment. I knew I’d be able to focus there, away from the distractions of city life.” After being locked in for 2 years, Evelyn embraced every opportunity to make the most of her remaining student life. She joined Particle, the university’s literary magazine, where she grew from junior poetry editor to co-editor-in-chief in her final year. “Being part of Particle helped me connect with the creative side of myself. I loved the process of bringing writing to life and working with a team to share stories.” Evelyn’s ambitions extended beyond the written word. Not content with remaining behind the scenes, she also stepped into public-facing roles, becoming an emcee at university concerts and book launches outside school. “At first, I was terrified, especially for events where my classmates would see me. But I realised that the things that scared me the most often turned out to be the most rewarding.”
For Evelyn, these years were pivotal. From discovering content creation during lockdown to refining her creative voice through literature, leadership, and public speaking, every step helped her grow. “The pandemic gave me time to explore something new, and campus life gave me the confidence to take it further.”
From Influencer to Educator: A Journey of ReinventionEvelyn’s pandemic experiment soon evolved into a flourishing business, her followers growing to the tens of thousands. Her presence in the social media world earned her brand deals and recognition that showcased the surprising profitability of the influencer world. “I never imagined I could make five times what I earned tutoring just from creating content,” she admits. But alongside the rewards came significant challenges. The more time Evelyn devoted to making videos, the more she unveiled the many misconceptions of being an influencer. “People think it’s not a real job or that it’s easy, but the competition is intense, and the pressure to constantly innovate can be overwhelming.” Burnout followed as her focus shifted from creativity to analytics: chasing views, engagement, and perfection. Eventually, she took a step back to realign her content with her values, transitioning from beauty and skincare to themes of personal growth and work-life balance. “I want my content to reflect who I am now, even if it means letting go of what’s familiar.” Coinciding with this period of self-reflection, Evelyn was met with a bold new opportunity. She travelled back to her homeland, Indonesia, to pursue work in both marketing and teaching (the former in which she has had no prior experience or formal training in). The transition was daunting for her, leaving behind a path of comfort and familiarity, moving yet again to another country, and doing work she had little experience in. Being the sole marketing strategist for the growing math enrichment centre Seriously Addictive Maths, Evelyn’s responsibilities range from managing campaigns and partnerships to organising large-scale events. “I’ve had to learn everything on the job, and it’s been both exciting and overwhelming.” Evelyn’s journey in marketing has taught her the power of storytelling and community building: two important keys to creating authentic marketing campaigns, and, in turn effective. Evelyn also stresses the importance of word-of-mouth marketing, identifying it as “the highest form of conversion”. In her work, she has learned to find a balance between meeting audience expectations while staying true to her evolving passions, ensuring her job stays meaningful.Alternatively, her work as an English teacher at I CAN READ has offered a counterbalance to the pressures of marketing. Evelyn found unexpected joy and satisfaction in planning lessons, building connections with students, and watching their growth. Interestingly, being a teacher has helped her with marketing. Evelyn has a more thorough understanding of education and what it takes to advertise it authentically. Beyond anything, teaching has given Evelyn the sense of certainly that she has often struggled to find. “Teaching has been such a comfort; it’s something I feel I can fall back on when everything else feels uncertain.”While these new roles are less lucrative than making content for big-name brands on social media, Evelyn prioritises the growth that they provide. “I don’t need as much money right now, and I feel more fulfilled knowing that I’m exploring work I’ve always been curious about,” she explains. Her career pivot represents a desire that goes beyond a higher paycheck, a desire to create something meaningful and sustainable. Dare to Evolve: Advice, Aspirations, and GrowthIn a life shaped by movement and change, Evelyn Ramli’s journey is rooted in one simple philosophy: “Do what scares you the most. That’s where growth happens.” From starting content creation during the pandemic to moving to Indonesia for new professional roles, she has consistently embraced fear as a catalyst for transformation. Public speaking gigs and unfamiliar challenges once terrified her, but each leap proved to be a stepping stone toward confidence and fulfilment. When asked about future ambitions, Evelyn envisions a self-described “lazy-girl job”, characterised by balancing financial stability with personal joy. “Right now, I’m in what I’d call my hustle era: working hard and exploring different jobs I’ve always been curious about. A ‘lazy-girl job’ doesn’t mean I don’t work hard. It’s about finding something fulfilling and stable that doesn’t drain me completely.” The pursuit of this aspiration underlies a deeply personal goal: reconnecting with her parents and making up for the years spent apart, showing them the love and care they deserve.Evelyn’s journey unveils the courage to evolve and redefine, underscoring that “fear is not a stop sign, it’s an invitation to grow.” By stepping into discomfort and pursuing what scares her, Evelyn has turned challenges into opportunities, reminding us all that growth begins at the edge of our comfort zones.

OUM: Where Flexibility Meets Excellence in Online Education

It’s not just about which school you go to — it’s about what you do with the opportunities given to you. Your effort, attitude, and determination are what truly shape your journey. With the right mindset, any school can become the foundation for incredible growth. But what if the school itself inspires you to dream bigger and achieve more? A place with world-class resources, supportive mentors, and a community that challenges you to excel? For Joel Pang, that’s what Kolej Yayasan UEM (KYUEM) offered. As one of Malaysia’s top-performing A-Level colleges, KYUEM has been a transformative experience for Joel.Joel was over the moon when he found out he would be pursuing his A-Levels at KYUEM, his dream institution.Born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak, Joel Pang completed his SPM at SMK Batu Lintang in 2021. He was overjoyed to receive the prestigious Shell Scholarship, which allowed him to pursue A-Levels at KYUEM, his dream institution."Transitioning from an SMK school to KYUEM was a humbling experience, as most students here are already from private schools or boarding schools," he says. "As challenging as I found transitioning, it was an incredibly rewarding experience."
Studying at KYUEM
Joel’s two years at KYUEM were defined by a supportive community, dedicated teachers, and an environment encouraging personal and academic growth. For him, it was the people who made KYUEM truly special. From the start, Joel was surrounded by friends who pushed each other to achieve their best. This collaborative spirit was crucial as he adjusted to the steep transition from SPM to A-Levels. The shift, especially in Mathematics — where Mechanics posed a significant challenge — was initially daunting. However, he soon found his footing through KYUEM’s Peer Tutoring Programme, scheduling weekly one-on-one sessions with senior tutors."I remember being hesitant at first to sign up, but my first tutor, Xi Ting, really changed my perspective. She would share her own tips and tricks, as well as guide me patiently through each tough mechanic's question."Since then, Joel began stepping out of his comfort zone, forming study groups with friends to share resources and tackle tricky questions together.Throughout his time at KYUEM, Joel received incredible support from friends who constantly pushed each other to achieve their best. The teaching staff at KYUEM were equally remarkable. Joel often recalls how teachers like Dr. Linda, Mdm Pravinjit, Puan Sheila, and Puan Ashiha went above and beyond to support him. They were always approachable, answering questions both within and beyond the syllabus. One standout memory was when Joel sought help from Dr. Linda for an International Chemistry Olympiad problem. Although it was beyond the A-Level syllabus, she used her expertise and research experience to guide him. This kind of personalised attention was made possible by KYUEM’s small class sizes, which encouraged a more engaging and interactive learning environment. Joel especially valued how his teachers took the time to check on his understanding and treat students like family. Their constant encouragement, paired with small rewards like treats, helped keep him motivated and confident. With the unwavering support of his peers and teachers, Joel chose to focus on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Further Mathematics for his A-Levels, knowing these subjects would be essential for his goal of pursuing Chemical Engineering. Thanks to KYUEM’s strong sense of community and personalised attention, Joel was predicted 4A*, setting a solid foundation for his future.Outside of academics, Joel was actively involved in student-led activities, finding the Student Services Department incredibly supportive of his initiatives. One of his key achievements was founding the first-ever E-Sports Club at KYUEM.Noticing a gap in student life, Joel pitched the idea to the department, which quickly helped him get the club up and running. With their support, Joel and his committee organised KYUEM’s first E-Sports Carnival, featuring games like Valorant, MLBB, Marvel SNAP and FIFA. Beyond the E-sports club, KYUEM’s vibrant and diverse environment allowed Joel to experience Malaysia’s cultural richness firsthand. From celebrating Hari Raya to Diwali, the school embodied Malaysia’s unity in diversity, where everyone came together to enjoy music, food, and laughter. Joel found the University Relations Department (UR) to be incredibly kind and caring and skilled in guiding university applications.
How KYUEM’s UR Team Guided Joel to Top University Offers
Joel received offers from some of the world’s top universities, including the University of Cambridge, Caltech, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania. None of this would have been possible without the support he received from KYUEM’s University Relations (UR) team. The UR department played a crucial role in his journey, offering guidance at every step of the university application process. One of the standout aspects of the UR department is their passion and dedication. They’re not just knowledgeable — they’re genuinely invested in the success of their students. Through nearly 40 hours of talks, UR helped Joel with everything from selecting the right courses to fine-tuning his personal statements. The team made sure he stayed on track with deadlines and ensured that his applications were submitted on time."They also ensured they write us the best recommendation letters possible by going above and beyond in understanding what truly makes us as a person."When it came to essay writing and application forms, Joel knew the UR team was always just an email or a knock away. Whether it was reviewing his personal statement or answering questions about CommonApp or UCAS, the UR team was there for him. They also organised mock interviews with companies like Elevate and MABECS, allowing Joel to prepare for the rigorous admissions processes.Considering all these factors, it's no wonder KYUEM students often gain admission into leading universities, just like Joel.Today, Joel is studying BS in Chemical Engineering at Caltech, a world-renowned science and engineering institute. "I’ve always been passionate about Physical Chemistry and Thermodynamics, and KYUEM helped cement that, first through the classes, where we learn real-life applications and secondly through engineering talks organised by the Engineering Society or UR who gave me a glimpse of what it was really like to be a chemical engineer."Joel is the only Malaysian accepted into the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for the Class of 2028.
Joel’s Advice for KYUEM A-Level Students
For aspiring students considering A-Levels at KYUEM, Joel’s advice is simple: step out of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences. KYUEM offers a chance to explore different interests, so be curious and dive into things you genuinely enjoy. You might discover a new passion along the way.He believes that KYUEM is the perfect environment to explore different interests, so students should stay curious and dive into activities they truly enjoy. "Who knows? You might discover a new passion along the way."When facing challenges, Joel stresses the importance of seeking help. KYUEM has a wealth of resources available to students, and it’s crucial to make the most of them, especially when stress begins to build. He also reminds students not to compare themselves to others, as everyone has their own unique journey. It’s about writing your own story, not living someone else’s."Have faith in yourself. Believing in yourself even when others doubt can take you far."

MMU Recognised Among Top 5 Private Universities at the 7th Graduates Choice Award 2024

The road to discovering one’s true calling is often winding and littered with uncertainties. For Vicki Lai, the journey of unveiling fulfilment was about rediscovering a childhood fascination, blending her love for creativity and being brave enough to turn it into a meaningful career. As a counsellor specialising in expressive arts therapy, Vicki combines her Master’s training in psychology with her passion for creative expression to thoughtfully aid her clients in navigating their mental health. From studying English to embracing psychology, Vicki’s journey reminds us of the power of persistence and self-discovery.
An Early Fascination with Psychology
Vicki’s intrigue for the human mind sparked at a young age.
“I was always amazed by how the mind works,” she says, recalling her childhood fascination with crime shows and their deep dives into human behaviour, understanding people and their motivations.
However, societal perceptions and a lack of exposure to psychology as a career path made it difficult for her to pursue this passion. “My parents weren’t aware of how psychology could become a career.” With her family encouraging her to pursue a more conventional education and career path, Vicki opted for a degree in English Language and Literature, a subject she was equally passionate about but had more certainty in. “Language was the only thing I was sure of back then.”Vicki pursued her Bachelor's degree at the University of Nottingham (Malaysia campus). Yet, during her undergraduate years, Vicki’s fascination with psychology stubbornly persisted. She even took electives in psychology and explored linguistics, which gave her insight into how the mind processes communication. Her time at Nottingham also exposed her to a rich academic culture and a supportive environment that encouraged exploration, both of which would later guide her transition to counselling.
Rediscovering Psychology Through Counselling
Upon completing her degree, Vicki still couldn’t shake the pull she had toward psychology. However, she acknowledged that pursuing a second undergraduate degree wasn’t feasible, thus turning to counselling as a way to re-enter the field. “After graduating, I felt like I still had to get back to the psychology field. Counselling was the only option for me to get into psychology without taking another degree.” This decision set her on a new path, one that reignited her passion for understanding the human mind. While researching on a suitable Master’s in Counseling, Vicki found a programme offering an expressive arts therapy module that caught her attention.
“IMU was the only institution offering this module, so that’s why I picked this programme.”
Studying at International Medical University was a transformative experience for her, the course combining a rigorous academic experience with hands-on, experiential learning. “Every week, we participated in practical sessions where we were both clients and participants. Experiencing the therapy myself helped me understand its power,” Vicki recalls. With an extensive and stimulating learning experience, Vicki not only deepened her knowledge in psychology but also confirmed her passion for integrating creativity into mental health practices. Her time at IMU helped bridge the gap between her academic background and unique career aspirations, equipping her with the tools to make a meaningful impact.

A Day in Vicki's Life: Counselling, Workshops, and Creativity
Newly graduated and finding her footing in the world of counselling and therapy, Vicki’s life is as dynamic as it is rewarding. On top of completing her counselling internship and facilitating workshops as a freelancer, Vicki also tutors English through online classes. “Everything feels everywhere right now, it’s all freelance and part-time.” Yet, with all these varying projects keeping her busy, Vicki continues to maintain a level head and performs her duties with passion and professionalism.Vicki embraces a multitude of methods in her art therapy, ranging from sandbox therapy to drawing and flashcards, ensuring clients can explore their emotions in personal and unique ways. One particularly memorable experience involved a client struggling to express himself verbally. “I gave him figurines and a sandbox, and he spent nearly half the session moving all the sand to one side,” Vicki shares. When she asked why, he revealed feelings of loneliness and isolation, explaining, “No one has ever tried to step into my world.” For Vicki, this moment was a poignant reminder of the profound breakthroughs that creative therapy can bring. “Even if it’s just 20% progress, I’ll take it—that 20% can mean everything to someone.”Beyond one-on-one counselling, Vicki designs and conducts workshops in group settings (often corporate or educational), thoughtfully tailored to the needs and intentions of the participants.
“Sometimes they’re clear about their goals, like team-building or stress relief. Other times, I create general programmes to make the sessions approachable for everyone,” she explains.
Through her work, Vicki has encountered clients from diverse backgrounds, which has allowed her a broader perspective and the opportunity to test her adaptability. “Every day is different— a different accent, different customs. I have to constantly update myself to connect with my clients better.”Whether she’s working with clients individually or in a group setting, Vicki is dedicated to creating safe spaces for expression, self-exploration, and healing.
Personal Growth: Find Strength in Sensitivity
Vicki’s journey wasn’t just about professional growth, it also involved significant personal transformation. For a large part of her life, Vicki struggled with being too sensitive, a trait that she identified as a weakness. “I used to hate being sensitive. People would ask me all the time: ‘Why are you this emotional?’” she shares. This perception carried on to her journey into psychology and counselling, where she found herself feeling intense emotions during group discussions and explorations, even shedding tears in some instances, and then feeling insecure about how she reacted. However, through thoughtful advice from a lecturer, Vicki saw a pivotal shift in her perspective. “She asked me, ‘Why don’t you embrace it? This is something you need as a counsellor: the ability to feel and connect with others.’” Dispelling the correlation between sensitivity and weakness, Vicki began to gain confidence in what she spent her whole life perceiving as a flaw. “Now, I see it as a gift, it helps me feel and connect with people more intensely.” While this breakthrough has benefitted her work, it has also allowed her to embody a more positive perception of herself.
Looking Forward: Vicki’s Vision and Words of Wisdom
Vicki’s future aspirations remain clear. She has set her sights on expanding her cultural horizons, aiming to interact with and help people from all walks of life. “I don’t picture myself staying in Malaysia. I want to expose myself to different backgrounds and environments.” Yet, her commitment to psychology and mental health remains unwavering; if anything was certain for Vicki, it is that she will dedicate the foreseeable future to counselling. “One thing I know for sure is that I’ll always be in this field, doing work related to psychology and mental health.”Vicki offers valuable advice to those considering a career in counselling or therapy. “You need to have passion because this line of work requires so much of you as a person,” she emphasises. She calls attention to the importance of forming genuine connections and having sincere care for every client, the profession going far beyond using applied theory but also being wholeheartedly present for those in need.Acknowledging how much she’s grown over the last few years, Vicki knows that the road ahead is full of possibilities. Her story is an important reminder of how embracing your unique strengths and interests can lead to a deeply fulfilling life. Though Vicki is open to unexpected opportunities, her guiding principle will remain to be her passion for mental wellness.
“If you have the passion, hold on to it. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it when your heart is in the right place.”

From Literature to Therapy: How Vicki Lai Found Her True Calling

The Future of Work: What SPM Graduates Need to Know About Emerging Job Opportunities

For many Malaysian students, the allure of studying abroad extends beyond academic experience. The idea of securing a well-paying job and launching a successful career often plays a significant role in the decision-making process. Among the top choices for studying abroad, Australia and the United Kingdom seem to be the two most popular choices for Malaysians. Both countries boast world-class education systems, but how do they compare when it comes to finding employment after graduation?
Post-Graduation Work Visa Policies
One of the first factors to consider is post-graduation work visa policies. These policies determine how long you can remain in the country to seek employment after completing your studies. In Australia, the Temporary Graduate visa (Post-Study Work Stream) offers international students a chance to work for two to four years, depending on the level of qualification. For instance, students completing a bachelor's degree are eligible for a two-year visa, while those with a master's degree can stay for up to three years. Graduates from regional universities may enjoy additional incentives, such as extended visa durations, encouraging them to work outside major metropolitan areas. On the other hand, the UK provides a Graduate Route visa, allowing international students to stay and work for two years (three years for PhD holders) without requiring employer sponsorship. This visa is particularly appealing for those who want to gain work experience and explore the job market before transitioning to long-term work or residency permits.
Verdict: Australia offers more flexibility and potentially longer stays for higher qualifications, while the UK provides straightforward access to its vibrant job market. The better option depends on your desired industry and duration of stay.

Job Market Conditions
Both countries have strong job markets, but the opportunities differ by sector and region. In Australia, industries such as healthcare, engineering, IT, and education are in high demand. The country’s relatively smaller population means less competition for certain roles, particularly in regional areas. This can be advantageous for graduates in specialized fields. However, the job market in major cities like Sydney and Melbourne can still be competitive. The UK, as one of the largest economies in Europe, offers diverse job opportunities, particularly in finance, technology, and creative industries. London, for example, is a hub for global finance, attracting companies and job seekers from around the world. However, this also means that competition for jobs can be intense, particularly for roles that do not require niche skills.
Verdict: Australia might be a better choice for graduates seeking roles in high-demand industries with less competition, while the UK excels in providing opportunities in global markets for those prepared to face stiffer competition.

Cultural and Networking Opportunities
The culture and networking environment in both countries can significantly influence your ability to integrate and find job opportunities.Australia is known for its laid-back and inclusive culture. International students often find it easy to build connections through university programs, internships, and local community events. Regional areas, in particular, are welcoming, and smaller communities provide close-knit networking opportunities. In contrast, the UK offers exposure to a global corporate culture. London and other major cities host numerous professional networking events, conferences, and industry-specific fairs. These events give graduates direct access to industry leaders and potential employers.
Verdict: If you value a relaxed environment with a strong sense of community, Australia may be more appealing. If you thrive in competitive and fast-paced professional settings, the UK might be a better fit.

Salary and Cost of Living
Understanding the balance between starting salaries and the cost of living is crucial for making an informed decision. In Australia, starting salaries for graduates tend to be competitive, especially in fields like IT and engineering. The cost of living, while high in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, is more manageable in smaller cities or regional areas. This allows graduates to save more and enjoy a higher quality of life. The UK offers higher starting salaries in certain sectors, particularly in finance and technology. However, the cost of living, especially in London, can offset these benefits. Graduates working in smaller cities like Manchester or Birmingham may find a better balance between salary and expenses.
Verdict: Australia offers a more favourable balance between salary and cost of living for most graduates, while the UK’s potential for higher salaries is better suited for those who can manage the higher living costs in major cities.

Long-Term Residency Opportunities
For many international students, the ability to transition from a temporary visa to permanent residency is a significant factor.Australia provides clear pathways to permanent residency (PR) for international graduates. Many industries, particularly those on the Skilled Occupation List, make it easier for graduates to apply for PR if they secure relevant jobs. The UK, while offering options to transition from the Graduate Route to a Skilled Worker visa, has stricter requirements for permanent residency. The process often requires sponsorship from an employer and meeting specific income thresholds.
Verdict: Australia has a more straightforward and accessible pathway to permanent residency, making it the better option for those seeking long-term settlement.

Alumni Experiences
Many Malaysian students who have studied in Australia and the UK share valuable insights into their job-seeking journeys. A common theme among Australian alumni is the supportive environment for international students, with many securing roles through university career services or internships. Meanwhile, UK alumni often highlight the prestige of a UK degree and its ability to open doors globally, albeit with a more competitive hiring process.
Final Verdict
Choosing between Australia and the UK ultimately depends on your career goals, industry preferences, and financial situation. Australia offers a welcoming environment, favorable visa policies, and pathways to permanent residency, making it ideal for students seeking stability. On the other hand, the UK provides unparalleled global networking opportunities and access to some of the world’s top employers for those ready to navigate a competitive job market. As you weigh your options, consider the industries you want to work in, your adaptability to different cultural environments, and your long-term plans. Consulting with study-abroad advisors and speaking to alumni from both countries can provide additional clarity. Whether you choose Australia or the UK, planning and persistence are key to turning your international education into a successful career.
