We have two esteemed UK universities, each claiming to be the best in Malaysia.Let’s unpack these claims and find out who’s really number 1.Standing out in World Rankings The University of Southampton advertisement featured the QS International Rankings. The QS World University Rankings is a prestigious annual ranking that assesses the performance of universities worldwide. It evaluates institutions based on key criteria such as academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, research citations per faculty, international faculty, and international student ratios. These rankings provide a super comprehensive overview of a university's standing in the global academic community, helping students and educators identify top institutions in various fields of study. From this, Southampton appears to have a clear advantage. The University of Southampton is ranked number 80, while Nottingham is at 108.In the Times Higher Education rankings (another widely-used global university rankings), we see a similar gap, with Southampton ranked at 97 and Nottingham at 130.So from a rankings standpoint, Southampton takes the lead in offering better international recognition and prestige. But does this mean that the University of Nottingham was manipulative in its claim? Not necessarily.Popularity and variety If you look closely, the University of Nottingham Malaysia billboard has a little caveat in fine print – “Based on highest number of students @ Profile Book IBTS (MOHE) 2021” highlighting the fact that the university is a popular choice among Malaysians, which is only possible through reputation and top-class education.

Fun Fact: The University of Nottingham was the first UK university to set up an overseas campus in year 2000, and guess where they decided to do this? That’s right, Malaysia. At the same time, The University of Nottingham Malaysia was also the first UK university to establish a branch campus in Malaysia. As such, the university has grown to offer a broad range of courses and fields of study.

Looking through both universities’ Malaysian websites, it is clear that University of Southampton Malaysia is more focused, primarily concentrating on engineering, computer science, and business disciplines. This narrower focus enables Southampton to deliver deep expertise and high-quality education in these key areas, particularly aligning with its strengths in global rankings for engineering and technology. In contrast, The University of Nottingham Malaysia offers a super diverse range of academic programmes across multiple disciplines, including business, engineering, law, science, and all sorts of arts and social science courses. This extensive variety allows students to explore and specialise in numerous fields, catering to a wide array of interests and career aspirations. So, Who Really Deserves the Number 1 Title? In the end, the title of “number 1” depends on what you’re looking for. There is a clear winner if you base it on world rankings alone, but when it comes to your education, there are other aspects to consider. It’s also about finding the right fit for your lifestyle, the campus ambience that resonates with you, and the kind of student community you want to be part of. Some students might prioritise affordability and consider tuition fees as a deciding factor. Others might look at the career opportunities and industry connections a university can offer, which can be crucial for your future job prospects. The location of the campus, its facilities, and even the cultural vibe of the university are all significant factors that can influence your decision. Both universities bring something valuable to the table, the decision ultimately comes down to your personal academic goals.Next time you see those billboards in Petaling Jaya, you’ll have a better understanding of what each university is claiming—and why. And who knows? You might just find yourself in a lively debate with your friends about which one truly deserves the number 1 spot.

Recently, one of our curious readers reached out with an observation they made on their way to a local shopping mall. They spotted a billboard from the University of Southampton Malaysia claiming to be the number 1 UK university in Malaysia. A bold but respectable claim

Southampton vs Nottingham: Who REALLY is No.1?

Pushed by the pandemic, the University makes progress in ensuring quality education continuesLike other sectors, higher education has been significantly impacted by the rapid spread of COVID-19, creating uncertainty among parents and students. Over the last year, universities and colleges have been very responsive to the current situation by implementing actions to control the spread of cases and to keep students and staff safe. The University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) and its parent campus in the UK, the University of Southampton (UoS), have withstood the turbulent challenging times by undertaking various efforts to ensure that the highest quality of education continues. These collaborative efforts can serve as a model to the global community in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of coordination, solidarity, decisiveness and leadership.Combating COVID-19From vaccine testing to the protection of frontline medical staff and the modelling of the spread of the virus worldwide, the University of Southampton (UoS) has risen to the challenge to make major contributions to the fight against COVID-19. Among its efforts to keep shared spaces safe, the University has developed a pilot home-based, non-invasive saliva testing programme for students. Students who arrive from across the UK and overseas are encouraged to take the test to keep the infection risk low in Southampton, and to give confidence to students, staff and local communities in Southampton city.Figure 1 COVID-19 saliva testing kitProviding facts and resources on COVID-19UoS and UoSM are closely monitoring the situation and responding to the measures taken to combat COVID-19 as efficiently and responsibly as possible. As the situation continues to change rapidly, their top priority is the health and safety of their students and staff in Malaysia and the UK while ensuring learning continuity for students to complete their programmes and graduate. With the campus closure of educational institutions under the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia and the England lockdown, the University has taken decisive measures to ensure that teaching and learning for all programmes will continue to be delivered as planned. To ensure that the community is regularly updated and kept informed, both UoS and UoSM have created a comprehensive set of FAQs which have been emailed to students. Information on topics such as studying and assessments, travel, facilities and support during these times is also made available through the university social media.Maximising online learningLike other universities, the University realises that higher education institutions need to align their objectives with the digital age. Even prior to the pandemic, the University has already adopted many technologies to enhance learning such as providing a wealth of support and information through over 200 million digital resources to aid physical and online learning. Students can access the electronic journals and e-books from the comfort of home. This, along with customised teaching and learning methodologies in blended learning, can provide an engaging and personalised learning experience. The University has both live sessions and flipped classrooms for virtual lectures and tutorials, whereby students can listen to a lecture online and then participate in a group discussion or work project. Understanding that some students are unable to fully benefit from online resources, the University has recorded the classes to make them accessible offline. Besides using the usual online platforms such as Microsoft Teams, students are also supported through Blackboard, a web-based service where they can find material, take online tests and use discussion boards.Agilesh Manivannan, a Year 3 Electrical and Electronic Engineering student, said: “There has been no damage to our studies as the University allows us to use many technology-based tools at our disposal.”Believing that lecturers have now become guides, facilitators and collaborators in the learning process, Assistant Professor Dr. Ivan Ling, an Electrical and Electronic Engineering lecturer at the University of Southampton Malaysia, created a learning portal, inspired by other online teaching and learning providers, to offer mixed media content instead of just lecture recordings. “The world is changing and so are we. Here, at the University of Southampton Malaysia, we are thinking of innovative ways to practise what we preach, by incorporating technology into our virtual classrooms. We create a virtual environment where demonstrators and tutors can interact with students and provide the much needed support virtually.”Supervised digital lab activitiesKnowing how challenging it can be for higher education institutions and students to cope and adapt to the current shifts, the University of Southampton Malaysia continues its commitment to the students by delivering Bitscope, one of the components of the students’ laboratory projects, to their home – for free. Bitscope and other associated components are loaned to students during the shutdown period to facilitate virtual laboratories. With these virtual scopes, lecturers can guide students virtually to perform the activities and to ensure excellent grades in their assessments. Undeniably, nothing can beat the experience of hands-on activity in an actual lab setting but these efforts are parallel to the way lecturers run projects in a laboratory setting.Figure 2 The Bitscope was delivered to students' homes to mimic actual laboratory activities Providing personal support for wellbeing beyond classroom wallsThe University understands that shifting so quickly from interacting in a four-wall classroom setting to a virtual engagement can be challenging. To enable students to feel supported, both UoS and UoSM assign a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) to each student. The PAT offers one-to-one support and advice on their studies and other issues, especially during the pandemic. Adding to this advantage, UoSM also provides online student services to support students in any matter regarding their university experience.Beyond this, UoS also provides several other services to students in coping with the current situation. The Enabling Services and Student Support Hub are on hand and ready to chat with students if they are feeling overwhelmed while the Ask UoS series is the university’s mitigation measures that have been put in place to support students in their studies, coursework and assessment during this challenging academic year. While the University is agile in providing academic-related services to students during the pandemic, the student associations at both UoS and UoSM are also proactively promoting a healthy, safe and enjoyable university experience by hosting a range of virtual events to enhance the student experience such as virtual game nights, virtual treasure hunt, career webinars and festive competitions.Figure 3 A virtual game night organised by the UoSM Student Association to break the ice between existing and new students joining the campus onlineReimagining university education at SouthamptonIt is challenging to say the least, but we should credit universities for the way they are adapting and responding to the pandemic. Many of the adjustments to teaching and learning, research and student engagements have brought a newer and better version of the higher education experience. Determined to further pursue this, the University of Southampton Malaysia and University of Southampton UK will continue exploring new opportunities to improve the quality of teaching and learning to benefit students even after their graduation. The University of Southampton Malaysia is a specialist in business, computer science and engineering programmes, and allow students to start their degree in Malaysia and complete it in the UK. UoSM Efforts in Responding to COVID-19

Considering the rising concern about the COVID-19 outbreak, a growing number of universities across the world have either postponed or cancelled all campus and other activities, and shifted all teaching and learning online. This situation posed new challenges to both students and lecturers as online teaching and learning became more than just a substitute in ensuring that education continues. Another issue of not being able to have physical meetings is that both students and lecturers are unable to interact face to face, and this may lead to inefficiency in learning and a lack of motivation due to isolation. Being alone at home may also lead to a slight deterioration in the quality of work if students find the extra workload isn’t helping, and they may worry about the quality of grades and assessments. Some might even think that this is not the education experience that they had signed up for.How are universities responding to these concerns during the pandemic? Many universities have responded with great agility to this sudden dramatic change. Lecturers and tutors have moved to new approaches for the most effective teaching and learning. They no longer rely on the ‘chalk and talk’ mode but have become guides, facilitators, curators and collaborators in the learning process. What does the University of Southampton Malaysia do?Believing that its top priority is providing learning continuity so students can graduate and move into employment, the University goes beyond the basics in supporting students in their learning. Some of its efforts include:1. Over 200 million digital resources to aid learningStudents will not only rely on resources and materials provided by their lecturers but can also access DelphiS, a discovery tool that provides quick and simple access to electronic journals and e-books searchable across multiple databases of the University. This enables students to access the materials they need from the comfort of their home.2. Virtual tutorials led by expert academicsThe University has both live sessions and flipped classrooms for virtual lectures and tutorials. Understanding that some students are unable to fully benefit from online resources, the University works with them with compassion and flexibility to ensure that they are not disadvantaged. This is why all sessions are recorded to assist students who can’t make it at the scheduled time, or who simply want to review it again later.Assistant Professor Dr. Ivan Ling, an Electrical and Electronic Engineering lecturer at the University, takes it one step further to ensure that the quality of teaching and learning at the University remains top notch. He has created a learning portal, inspired by other online teaching and learning providers, to offer mixed media content instead of just lecture recordings.“The world is changing and so are we. Here, at the University of Southampton Malaysia, we are thinking of innovative ways to practise what we preach, by incorporating technology into our virtual classrooms. We create a virtual environment where demonstrators and tutors can interact with students and provide the much-needed support virtually.”Students are also supported through various online platforms to gain access to learning resources such as Blackboard, Microsoft Teams and Panopto which enables online submissions and feedback.Gerald Ting, an engineering student, said “I usually start my lab work way before the lab sessions but it takes a long time without guidance. Thankfully, the website created by our lecturer helps a lot as it is sometimes hard for us to get the answers we need on the web.”3. Supervised digital projects and assessmentsJust when we think that its efforts are enough, the University has surpassed expectations in its commitment to the students by delivering Bitscope, one of the components of students’ laboratory projects for their engineering modules, to their front door – for free. With these virtual scopes, lecturers can guide students virtually using Microsoft Teams. Bitscope and other associated components are loaned to students during the shutdown period to facilitate some of the virtual laboratories. It’s true that nothing beats the experience of a hands-on activity in an actual lab setting but these efforts are the way lecturers would guide students in a laboratory setting. To add to the advantage, students can continue to explore by using these instruments outside the scheduled laboratory sessions– another testament to the fact that learning knows no bounds.Knowing how challenging it can be for higher education institutions and students to cope and adapt to the current shifts, the University is providing an extraordinary agile response to the unexpected and unprecedented COVID-19 disruption.Assistant Professor Dr. Low Siow Yong, Head of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme at Southampton Malaysia, said “We are constantly adapting and making use of the resources we have to facilitate the best learning environment for students. The USB based oscilloscope is one good example where we continue some of the practical sessions despite the shutdown. Students continue to learn the technical skills through these hands-on experiences and as importantly, through this process, they also pick up many transferable skills such as communication and time management. At the end of the day, we graduate engineers, not just graduates.”The University of Southampton Malaysia has been working hard in providing online teaching and learning since March last year, and will continue its commitment to offering students a smart, contemporary and authentic learning environment that will prepare them for the future. If you are interested to find out more about how the University is responding to the current situation, give a call to +6012-315 5047.To learn more about the University, visit www.southamptonmalaysia.edu.my

100% Scholarships from University of Southampton Malaysia to Celebrate its Achievement!

No thanks to Covid-19, students around the world are left floundering about their studies – questions arise, are online classes a thing now or can they return back to campus? Will the campus remain closed until a vaccine is discovered? But how long will that take?Arguably, the biggest stress for some students is definitely their plans to study overseas. Travelling and studying overseas are not permitted in many countries since borders are now either closed, or entrance to borders comes with extensive rules and SOPs. Not only that, health risks are another defining factor as many countries are still struggling with the pandemic. And for us Asians, we might have to face racial discriminations abroad. So, what can students do?
Try to find flexible campus transfer options
Why? Because flexible campus transfer options mean you have a chance to transfer to an overseas campus. At University of Southampton Malaysia, its engineering programmes focus on a 2+2 delivery model, whereby students can study two years in Malaysia before transferring to the UK to complete the other two years with a 20% scholarship on their Years 3 and 4 overseas.
