Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is concerned with the responsible development of products, processes, and power, whether at the molecular scale or at the scale of large and complex systems. Mechanical engineering principles and skills are needed at some stages during the conception, design, development, and manufacture of every human-made object with moving parts. Many innovations crucial to our futures will have their roots in the world of mass, motion, forces, and energy-the world of mechanical engineers. The career of a Mechanical Engineer involves efficient application of physical and human resources in improving the standard of living. A Mechanical Engineering program in UCTS is designed in combination of the basic knowledge of physical sciences and engineering education with experience and expertise to invent, run, and maintain mechanical equipment’s and systems in industries. A Mechanical Engineer also designs machine components for the production system of a particular product. Graduates in this area are capable of fulfilling the task of a technologist in the government, semi-government, and private firms. Graduates will be able to find job opportunities in various sectors such as manufacturing, processing, consultant, servicing, design, and research. A Mechanical Engineer may further his career as a designer, building contractor, manufacturer of machines or engineering products, researcher, or academician.

No more baju kurung and white shirt school uniforms, standing in the heat during assembly and facing the chaos of high school drama as you bid a bittersweet farewell.

As you finally get the chance to indulge in a well-deserved break, whether it's binge-watching Netflix at a cafe or lepak with friends, there might also be a hint of anxiety about what lies ahead. It's completely normal to feel this way, but eventually, you'll need to start planning for the future, right?

While pursuing higher education is generally considered the best option you can make to secure your future, the economic downturn has made it increasingly difficult for students to afford it.
The latest trend of technologies has shifted the lifestyle of the world’s population to digital natives, hyper-connectivity and urbanisation. With the rise of robot applications in which cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of things (IoT) and big data, new forms of technology and, subsequently communication and the production of things are growing exponentially.

How does this shift in lifestyle relate to the courses that students choose in higher education, which in turn would affect their careers in the future? Industries are constantly changing production and management into digital communication and produced at an advanced human-machine interface at a very high speed tremendously. Advancement of offices and houses in terms of building technologies and the environment, with the application of renewable energy, as well as building materials used in construction, should be considered. Things have changed tremendously with the rise of machine technology. Thus, this demands new curricula as well as skilled and knowledgeable engineers and technicians across all the discipline of works and courses.

Research and survey outcomes prove that the nature of work in engineering has been highly sought after by the industry, is currently still very much in demand and will be so in the future. The engineering profession has been an elitist (best-trained group in society) since the birth of technology hundreds of years ago.

Situated in Sibu, the University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) is a Sarawak state-owned university that provides relevant courses in demand, ranging from Engineering and Technology to Computing and Media, and Business and Management. Other courses offered by UCTS also include degree programmes in Food Technology and Wood Technology.

School leavers that have achieved excellent SPM results with at least five (5) credits or obtained a UEC qualification may apply for a one-year foundation study in science and art leading to a university degree. A year of education in the Foundation of Science or Foundation of Arts at UCTS will open up various opportunities to courses relevant to industries currently in demand. The endurance of future careers within the ever-changing sectors in the market depends on the fellow students themselves, in choosing the right field of study to follow at the university, and students certainly have the freedom to select aptly at UCTS.

The general requirements upon enrolling within; the School of Engineering and Technology, School of Computing & Creative Media, School of Business and Management, School of Built Environment (which comprises Architecture and Quantity Surveying courses) include either a Foundation certificate, Diploma or STPM, or any other equivalent qualification that deem fit to the specific requirements of the programmes that may be considered. The MOA accredits all UCTS undergraduate degree programmes.

UCTS also has unique entry requirements for students who possess vast experience within their fields of work as well as those who are planning to further their studies and upgrade their social status by obtaining a degree. In this case, students may apply to UCTS through Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL). APEL is a systematic process that involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior experiential learning to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes to gain access to a course of study and award of credits. This approach provides the opportunity for individuals with ample working experience but who lack the formal academic qualifications to pursue their studies in Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Thus, according to the MQA, knowledge obtained through formal education and working experience will both be assessed in APEL assessments.

If you are interested in applying for a place at UCTS, click the following link to get more information and begin your application!

Apply Now

For more information about UCTS, do visit http://www.ucts.edu.my/.

To find out more scholarships and courses, click here and here.

Afterschool.my is Malaysia’s no 1 higher education website that provides helpful information on courses, institutions and scholarships for students transitioning from secondary school to university level.
