It has sports facilities such as a football field, and artistic amenities such as musical instruments and dance studios.When asked about campus life at UTP, he says, &ldquo;The oval park is my go-to spot for evening leisure activities, especially jogging. To ensure a focused and meaningful experience, he carefully selected only a handful to engage with each semester. &ldquo;One of my most cherished experiences was participating in the annual Petrobowl, a quiz competition centred around the oil and gas industry. What makes this memory particularly special to me is its journey &ndash; I faced defeat twice before ultimately triumphing on my third attempt.&rdquo; He secured a victory at the university level and clinched the internationally recognised group competition at the national level in the same year.As UTP&rsquo;s brand garners international recognition, it often receives invitations to engage in global events alongside other prestigious universities. Arvindraj decided to participate in the Schlumberger case study competition during his final semester, organised by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).&ldquo;I felt immense pride in representing UTP amidst over 70 teams across Asia, and winning the competition was truly gratifying. First is an immersion into the organisation, job responsibilities and familiarisation of projects. The second phase involves high-intensity project execution. &ldquo;I did my internship with PETRONAS under the Strategic Research department where I was involved in research projects like Megatrends 2040 and Hydrogen Economy.&rdquo;During his time there, Arvindraj worked closely with many senior personnel from PETRONAS and even attended a meeting in the presence of the company&rsquo;s then Senior Vice President. &ldquo;My internship experience with PETRONAS definitely sharpened my research and analytical skills and built my confidence in public speaking.&rdquo;<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/postimages/b49271e434ef58a041c0f3d4df4fa20c79415ae2.jpg" style="width: 560px;" class="fr-fic fr-dib fr-fil">The award ceremony is usually done a day before the university&rsquo;s convocation date, but Arvindraj received his recognition virtually due to the lockdown.Making Dreams a RealityArvindraj&rsquo;s Petroleum Engineering peers were predominantly straight-A students with impressive educational backgrounds. Despite achieving straight A&#39;s in SPM, Arvindraj couldn&rsquo;t secure a scholarship for his desired niche undergraduate programme.&quot;I promised myself that I would graduate with a first-class degree and have my PTPTN loan waived.&quot; Five years later, that&rsquo;s precisely what transpired. To add to his achievements, he was recognised as and awarded the best academic student among his Petroleum Engineering cohort for his outstanding performance. Arvindraj’s Enriching Journey at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS: Where Passion Met Purpose

The new season of Game of Thrones may have just concluded, and there’s no denying the arduous wait in store till the next season arrives. Without giving too much away, the onus is clearly on defeating those pesky White Walkers, and what better way to do that than with Dragonglass? The rare matter, capable of ending the life of a marauding White Walker, seemed to be in short supply just when Jon Snow and co. needed it most. But fret not, for we have stumbled upon another place that stores it, or rather, the substance it’s derived from; Obsidian. Shockingly, and rather conveniently, it’s housed in a laboratory of all places, located within the hallowed halls of a premier institution that us Malaysians know very well -- Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).<img src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/76773/59c8b1b831d62.jpg" name="Picture 1" class="fr-fic fr-dii" width="602" height="401" border="0" align="bottom">Kept in the university’s rather elusive Department of Geosciences, Obsidian is actually a type of volcanic rock in this, the real world, while the one found on Game of Thrones comes with an added sprinkle of magical dust. The one found here however, isn’t deprived of a magical touch of its own, as described by UTP’s Programme Manager, Abdul Halim Abdul Latif.“The rock was formed when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is extremely rich in silica (about 65% to 80%), is low in water, and has a chemical composition similar to rhyolite (also an igneous type of rock). Obsidian has a glassy lustre and is slightly harder than window glass”.Ask any student about geoscience, and their knowledge about the course probably wouldn’t go much further than “It’s about rocks, right?”. While Geoscience is, on the surface of it, indeed about rocks, the course covers so much more that it would be a crime not to delve further. In addition, the relatively low number of geoscientists within the country and unconventional job scope (lots of travelling, onshore and offshore field trips) are the two factors that allure the prospective students into Petroleum Geoscience programme. Since every Petroleum Geoscience student in UTP is required to undergo a 7-months internship programme, the experience obtained allow them to secure the job related to the degree within 6 months after their graduation.Students even mildly interested would now shift their focus onto what subjects they should chiefly pay attention to, and they would be forgiven for having no clue what a course like petroleum geoscience would look for. In order to do this, a biopesticide had to be formulated. So, concocting a special, confidential neem-based formula and other natural extracts from plants, Suzana and her research team with the support from the Department of Agriculture have indeed successfully proven that biopesticide is definitely an improvement over the currently available chemical version.<a href="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/74994/5988335c53d65."><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-74995 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/74994/5988335c53d65." alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>This is because not only does it improve yields, it is also a much safer option without any negative chemical effects on the users as well as the paddy plants and the environment as a whole. This then will become the first biopesticide available for paddy and it is expected to have a significant impact on the paddy growing industry. “We are working alongside an international bio-based pesticide company with the support of the Department of Agriculture to improve the formula and make it into a “one-solve-all” biopesticide,” said Suzana.The synthesised material, which is an activating agent, produced by Suzana and her team can also be alternatively used together with the company&#39;s existing products. Meanwhile, lab tests have shown that the formula currently is able to reduce pest thus potentially double the yields of the paddy, notwithstanding the other variables that affect each harvest such as the weather and other uncontrollable factors.Developed specifically for paddy, she added that it has not been tested on other crops as yet, although technically and practically speaking it should also work with other plants. This is an exciting product in the making because the potential benefits for the paddy, and possibly other crops as well, is manyfold in that it enhances growth, improves yields and keeps bugs and pests away. “We are now ready to test it in a greenhouse environment and this will further add to the evidence of its efficacy and benefits,” Suzana revealed.<a href="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/74994/5988335c5988d."><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-74998 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://api.afterschool.com.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/74994/5988335c5988d." alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>She added that UTP has already applied for a patent on the biopesticide formula and is now in discussions with a company to take it to the next level. “The formula will eventually be licensed to a company because we need a lot of other endorsements and have to meet numerous agency requirements before taking it further into the production and commercialisation process.”An esteemed lecturer in UTP’s chemical engineering department, Suzana has been working on this biopesticide since 2015 as the lead researcher.
