For Anissa Amanda, life has always been a fusion of cultures and passions. Born in Jakarta and raised in Kuala Lumpur, she grew up surrounded by diversity, which became a big part of who she is.
A lifelong lover of film and television, Anissa dreamed of filmmaking from an early age. "However, at the time of choosing a degree, I was not entirely confident and also had the pressure of choosing one that my family would approve of."
It was during this period of uncertainty that, as life often does, something unexpected happened. After all, good things have a way of sneaking up on you when you least expect them.A brief conversation with a stranger on the LRT introduced Anissa to the field of Communications, offering her not just creative opportunities but a broad range of career possibilities ranging from corporate jobs to jobs in the media. That simple exchange set her on a new path — one that led her to Sunway University.“I dug deeper and found that Sunway University had a Communications course. After visiting the campus and learning more about the course, its syllabus, and job prospects, it was not a hard decision for me to make.”While studying at Sunway University, Anissa had the opportunity to visit surrounding campuses such as Monash and INTI.
Pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Communications at Sunway University
Sunway University, one of Malaysia’s leading private institutions, recently earned a spot among the top three universities in Malaysia, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025. For Anissa, the decision to enrol at Sunway came after visiting the campus and learning more about the Communications programme, including its syllabus and career prospects. However, when she began her degree in 2020, the timing was unexpectedly challenging. The onset of the global pandemic meant that her first two years were spent entirely online due to travel restrictions. Despite the limitations, Anissa found Sunway University was well-prepared to support students during this period. With tools like the elearn website and ‘Blackboard’— a streamlined platform for organising coursework, grades and class discussions — she could access her studies and stay connected to her lecturers, who went the extra mile by accommodating time differences for international students studying remotely.Once she managed to return to Malaysia and be on campus, her experience expanded in ways that online learning couldn’t capture. Sunway’s vibrant environment came alive with daily events such as live performances, mini concerts and talent shows that showcased students’ talents across many disciplines. The campus facilities offered a wealth of resources, from a fully equipped library to a media room for watching films. As an art student, she had access to specialised spaces like the photo and shooting studios. These facilities became especially valuable during her Event Management elective, where she and her classmates transformed an empty performance hall with a full stage setup, sound system and display screens for a fundraising event they planned and ran.
“It was so fascinating to see an empty hall come to life for the sake of an event created and run by students,” she says.
Anissa ended her final semester on a positive note with a well-presented final-year research project
Influential Educators and Lasting Lessons
Anissa’s experience at Sunway University was not only enriched by the campus environment but also by the remarkable educators who left a lasting impact on her. “Ms. Vijaya Sooria is definitely one of them,” she says. Ms. Vijaya taught Anissa her favourite subject, Basic Narrative Analysis, bringing not only passion to the class but also personal touches like notes of encouragement to her students. She was also the one to approve Anissa’s topic for her final year project, a significant milestone in her studies.Another influential educator was Anissa’s supervisor, Professor Bradley Freeman, who guided Anissa through her final year project and taught the engaging Laws and Ethics in Media course. His enthusiasm and expertise made complex topics accessible and memorable. She also recalls Mr. Woody, who taught Advertising and Design with contagious energy, and Ms. Priyadharshini Ahrumugam, whose thought-provoking approach to Media, Culture and Society encouraged deeper reflection and understanding. From these educators, Anissa absorbed valuable lessons that went beyond academics. The most powerful piece of advice she received was a reminder of the universal importance of communication.
“No matter what, our knowledge of communication will always be needed in all careers,” she recalls being told.
These words, coupled with frequent reminders to act ethically and responsibly, became guiding principles for Anissa as she pursued her studies and prepared for a career beyond university.Anissa spent a memorable three months interning with AirAsia, where she undertook the role of a copywriter.
Developing Skills Beyond the Classroom
As part of the Communications programme at Sunway, Anissa completed a dedicated internship semester, which she found to be an invaluable bridge between her studies and real-world experience. Sunway University offered extensive support in preparing students for internships, including career fairs right on campus, where companies set up booths for on-the-spot resume drops and interviews. There was also the added benefit of career services webinars that guided students on how to use the university’s job site, connecting Sunway students and alumni to job opportunities. With her resume reviewed at Sunway’s Career Hub and a placement ultimately secured through LinkedIn, Anissa landed an internship with AirAsia as a copywriter. There, she brought her studies to life, working on diverse campaigns and writing copy for key visuals, push notifications, and emails across the airline and its digital platform, AirAsia MOVE.
“I utilised a lot of the copywriting, marketing and branding knowledge I learned from my degree,” she says, crediting her coursework with helping her handle the demands of a fast-paced, multi-faceted role.
Anissa found that some of the most impactful skills she developed at Sunway came from group projects and active participation in clubs and societies — particularly teamwork and people management. “Teamwork and people management are often overlooked skills that are usually unteachable.” By tackling group assignments and collaborating in student organisations, she grew the confidence to work seamlessly with others and lead in professional settings, skills that have been instrumental in her career journey.Upon completing her degree, Anissa earned dual certificates from Sunway University and Lancaster University through a dual award programme.
Advice for Aspiring Communications Students
Reflecting on her journey, Anissa has a few valuable insights for aspiring Communications students at Sunway University.“As Communications students, it’s tempting to join every club and society since each one offers roles that look great on a CV,” she says, but her advice is to choose wisely.
“Experiment with roles to see what suits you best, and don’t hesitate to step back if something doesn’t feel right.”
She also encourages students to go beyond departmental boundaries by contributing to events across the School of Arts. She believes collaborating with peers from different disciplines within the faculty can open doors to future interests and potential career paths that students might not have previously considered. What’s more, she emphasises the importance of exploring Sunway’s wide range of facilities, including specialised equipment and creative spaces. Anissa recommends using these resources for personal projects in addition to course assignments, as it is a rare opportunity to experiment and even make mistakes in a supportive environment. “Don’t be afraid to look foolish — just take the first step and try,” she says, knowing that these moments of exploration often become the most memorable parts of university life.Currently, Anissa works as a freelance copywriter for AirAsia, leveraging the solid foundation established through her degree and internship experiences. Additionally, she freelances as an editorial writer for Crash Culture, a media collective based in Jakarta, where she covers topics related to media, culture, and events in the city. Anissa credits her time as a researcher and writer for the Sunway Gender Equality Club, as well as her coursework in Media, Culture, and Society and Basic Narrative Analysis, for honing the skills that prepared her for this role. Her goal is to transition into positions with greater creative control, and she is even revisiting her initial passion for filmmaking. Taking matters into her own hands, Anissa is currently enrolled in a short filmmaking course to pursue this interest further.

How Sunway University Helped Shape Anissa Amanda’s Career in Communications

While most teenagers are drawn to video games or sports, Leen Jason’s interests took him in a different direction. From as young as 13 years old, Jason was deeply captivated by the world of finance and investing. This captivation has led him to a promising career in investment analysis, not even 10 years later! At 22 years old, Jason works at an asset management firm, analysing equities and managing client funds. To Jason, investing is more than just a matter of handling numbers; it’s about understanding the world and the people who live in it; it’s about gaining perspectives and, ultimately, about creating a legacy that extends far beyond financial gain. The Early Spark: A Teenage Curiosity in Finance Jason’s fascination with finance sprouted like many people; he wanted to learn how to make money. “I would regularly go to the bookstore to read finance books for free, I did my fair share of ripping books out of their plastic packaging” Jason admitted with a laugh. “Initially, I just wanted to know how to make money or profits, but soon, I realised there was an art to it that I fell in love with. It’s really about learning how everything works together,” he said. The more he read about finance, the more Jason’s curiosity grew. He found that investing offered him a unique way to explore how the world operates, one company at a time. Soon enough, finance became less about money to Jason and more about satisfying a deeper thirst for knowledge about the industries, people, and global systems that shape the world.Educational Journey: From Curiosity to Academia| After completing his IGCSEs at Nobel International School, Jason decided on Sunway College for his pre-university education. He pursued a Foundation in Arts, a seemingly unconventional start for someone heading into a math-intensive career in actuarial science. “My Foundation experience really helped me broaden my horizons and understand people from other fields. I took the science stream during high school, and I didn’t really get exposed to people on the more creative side of things.”, he reflected. His time in Foundation helped him develop his ability to communicate with people from all walks of life, an invaluable asset to his career and life. Jason decided to make his transition to an actuarial science degree at Sunway University, where he was met with academic challenges of an entirely new level. Being surrounded by exceedingly bright mathematical minds, an area of study Jason has always felt confident in, made for a humbling experience that reshaped his understanding of his own strengths. “I thought I was good at math, but my classmates were on another level,” he recalled. Despite the challenges, he valued this exposure to advanced math and this lesson in humility has remained with him ever since.A project that encapsulated the dynamics Jason had with classmates involved creating an insurance product, complete with marketing strategies and pricing models. “Naturally, I took the more ‘people-facing’ side of things, while my teammates did the intricate math,” Jason reflected. This assignment reminded Jason that while technical skills are important, his strengths in communication were just as valuable.Starting His Career: Entering the World of Asset Management Entering asset management was a natural next step for Jason, where he would put his financial knowledge into action and even travel internationally to assess companies firsthand. But breaking into the field wasn’t easy. “In investment, firms usually look for people with experience, an overseas degree, or strong connections,” he explained. With only a degree in Actuarial Science at a local university to his name, Jason knew he had to find a way to separate himself from the crowd.Inspired by artists or programmers who would showcase their abilities and experience through their portfolios, Jason decided to put his deep knowledge of finance and investing to use. “I connected with people on LinkedIn and wrote research reports on stocks.” Taking such initiative was essential in displaying to employers not only his expertise but also his willingness to think outside the box and go the actual mile. It was this approach that caught the attention of abrdn, a global investment company, who, like him, valued substance over titles or university names. Now, as an investment analyst at abrdn, Jason not only evaluates stocks and market trends but also meets with CEOs and founders from many countries, gaining a unique perspective on each company’s potential. “Meeting the people who run these businesses and seeing their work environments, it’s all part of understanding their true potential.” Managing clients’ money is no light task, and Jason takes this responsibility seriously. “We’re reminded every day that it’s someone else’s money,” he shared, noting the weight that comes with his role. This accountability drives him to maintain a careful yet confident approach, balancing caution with determination as he navigates market shifts.Jason’s investment philosophy centres on a ‘business owner’ mindset, viewing each investment as a stake in a company rather than just a stock. “Think of it like owning a piece of a business; it’s about trusting the leadership and understanding the fundamentals.” Inspired by the principle that ‘genius lies in making the complex simple’, he believes that the best investments are often straightforward yet thoroughly researched.Future Goals and Personal Philosophy: Building a Legacy and Living Simply As committed as Jason is to his career in investment analysis, his ultimate goal goes beyond finance. Jason is inspired by the concept of ‘inclusive business’ and aims to start a venture that both supports disadvantaged communities and generates sustainable profit. “I want to build a business that helps people sustainably so it can keep running even after I’m gone.” For Jason, profit isn’t inherently negative; it’s simply a means to create lasting, positive change for those who need it most. This long-term vision drives him daily, motivating him to absorb everything he can about business operations and impact. Jason hopes to merge the insights he’s gained from asset management with a mission-driven approach, building an enterprise that balances profit with social good. With the rigours of a fast-paced and exhausting job, Jason’s outlook on life is refreshing. He believes in focusing on the essentials and cutting out unnecessary complications, both at work and in life. “I just want to live a simple, happy life,” he shared. Jason uses simplicities as a guiding principle, keeping his head clear amid all the complexities of this field, and it’s a mindset that he feels is getting increasingly lost in the current day and age. “When you think about it, a lot of us don’t really have as much to worry about as we think we do. Sometimes, we worry about what we believe are overwhelming problems, but they don’t even exist.”For those looking to enter the world of investing and finance, Jason has one key piece of advice: stay curious, prioritise learning and remember that investing is more than numbers. “I highly recommend One Up on Wall Street by Peter Lynch and Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits by Philip Fisher for beginners. These books helped me dive into the qualitative aspects of investment that have definitely shaped my approach.”For Jason, success comes from balancing curiosity with simplicity and embracing a grounded approach in both career and life. He also emphasised humility, encouraging newcomers to acknowledge what they don’t know and always to keep an open mind.

Beyond Profits: Leen Jason’s Path to Building a Legacy at 22

Students from five states in Malaysia learn more about accounting at the MIA-Sunway TES Accounting Quiz on 12 September 2015 in Sunway College.
The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) and the Sunway-TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence (TES CAE) recently co-organised their third accounting quiz for school students to encourage interest in accountancy among youths. This effort was supported by the Ministry of Education (MoE).Top three winning teams to the quiz received scholarships and financial assistance worth more than RM300,000 to study accountancy at Sunway College. Students were quizzed in several subjects including accounting, business and economics in an interactive manner. The participating schools at the quiz were from five states, namely Selangor and one (1) each from Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Sarawak. Each of these schools were represented by a team made up of five team members.Chief Executive Officer of MIA Ms Ho Foong Mooi at the finals stressed that accountants are "much more than number crunchers. They play a strategic role in the organisation as their ability to interpret and provide useful insights into data could reveal numerous business opportunities." This event was hence a way to reveal more about accounting to students. Also present was Mohd Anuar Abdul Hamid, Senior Principal Assistant Director, Co-Curricular and Arts Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia who supported this event as it encourages learning among students beyond the classroom. According to him, learning has to be supported by such supplementary events as education is a shared responsibility. It was underlined that bodies like the MIA should be taken onboard as partners because they would have the expertise within the field.Senior Executive Director Dr Elizabeth Lee from the Sunway Education Group and Sunway University added that such competitions promoted a healthy way of presenting one's talent and strengths.
