The Foundation Year extends over two semesters, delivered in Semester I [September to January] and Semester II [January to June]. Each semester comprises 12 direct-contact teaching weeks, 1 week of revision and then 2 weeks of examinations and provides students with a solid grounding in the biomedical sciences as well as providing them with the necessary IT skills to operate effectively within the College’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The course is delivered as a series of stand-alone and integrated modules with a modularised assessment.

The FY modular structure conforms to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The programme consists of 8 modules, amounting to 60 ECTS credits in total. Some modules carry 5 credits while others carry 10. The rationale behind the introduction of 10 credit modules into the FY was primarily to decrease the assessment burden on students in Semester I (being mindful of the challenges faced by some students on making the transition to tertiary level education).

Students must pass all modules to complete. Students may then begin first-year of Junior Cycle in Medicine at either the RCSI or UCD. A firm offer will be provided upon the release of final results.

What is better than studying abroad or studying locally? Having the best of both worlds! While studying abroad boasts many benefits such as cultural exchange and (potentially) more career opportunities, sometimes one cannot help but long for the comfort of one’s home country. On the other hand, studying locally probably would not give you the level of exposure the rest of the world has to offer in terms of practice.

One such university offering a medicine degree that allows you to study BOTH abroad and locally is RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (formerly Penang Medical College) or, RUMC for short.

Image via RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus

Located in George Town, Penang, RUMC is one of Malaysia’s leading university in Medicine. Their medical degree programme is offered in such a way that for the first two and a half years of the programme, you would be in Ireland to undertake biomedical and early clinical sciences studies in RCSI or UCD. After completing the pre-clinical studies, you would return to Malaysia for another two and a half years where you would complete extensive clinical training.

The programme would allow students to experience the best of both worlds while receiving a world-class education and graduating with a medical degree from the National University of Ireland (NUI).

Immersive student experience in Ireland and Malaysia

Image via University College Dublin (UCD)

Ireland is known internationally for its consistently high standards in education, and one of its most popular subjects among international students is medicine. Many people are choosing to study medicine in Ireland due to the country’s investment in education lately.

RCSI and UCD are two of the most prestigious medical universities in the country, and as students, you would be experiencing some of the best campus facilities in a culturally diverse environment. On top of that, you would also gain access to more than 130 student societies, including the Malaysian Medical Society among others.

Upon returning to Penang for the second half of the programme, you would be exposed to a clinical programme delivered by an expert clinical faculty, with more than 35 professors and lecturers from various medical backgrounds such as medicine, surgery, psychiatry, gynaecology, paediatrics and more. You would also benefit from one-to-one mentorship and modern innovative teaching styles. The programme is also recognised and accredited by both the Irish and Malaysian medical councils, implementing a rigorous and immersive approach to training young doctors.

For more information about RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus (RUMC), click here to read about the university and check out the list of courses offered.

If you’d like to apply directly to the university, click on the link below!

APPLY NOW

To find out more about scholarships and courses, check links.

Afterschool.my is Malaysia’s no 1 higher education website that provides helpful information on courses, institutions and scholarships for students transitioning from secondary school to university level.

Malaysia finally moved to double digits in the number of foreign branch campuses that have set up shop here, as the acclaimed Penang Medical College (PMC) was granted foreign university branch campus status by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and will now be known as the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) & University College Dublin (UCD) Malaysia Campus, or RUMC for short.

Image via pmc.edu.my

The university owes its lengthy name to the fact that it, unlike the other nine branch campuses in Malaysia, has the distinction of having two co-owners – RCSI and UCD. To top that off, RUMC is the only Irish branch campus on our soil and the only one set up via ‘conversion’ instead of from the ground up. While RUMC is its new name, time will be taken to phase out the name of old, so a grace period is to be expected.

The momentous achievement was lauded by all involved and served as a testament to the quality of the medical programmes offered not just by Ireland, but Malaysia as well. Perhaps it had something to do with the unique structure of PMC’s medical programmes, which saw its students spending 2.5 years in Dublin before returning to Malaysia for the remaining 2.5 years in PMC’s teaching hospitals, which has proven to be a masterstroke. It equipped medical students with proper medical know-how in Ireland and later acclimatises them to the clinical aspect in Malaysia, ensuring their transition to roles as housemen is as seamless as possible.

Image via pmc.edu.my

With branch campuses of universities from the United Kingdom, Australia, China and now Ireland having been erected in Malaysia, the options at a student’s disposal has never been more diverse. Additionally, they only add to Malaysia’s burgeoning reputation as an education hotspot as more and more big names throw their hats into the ring. Who do you think will be next?

Click HERE to know more about RCSI.

PMC will now be known as RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus, or RUMC for short.
