Landing a job nowadays is no easy feat. With inflation breathing down our necks, hanging onto our current job is a challenge. As a result, many working adults strive to push themselves to achieve more in life – by pursuing tertiary education. However, life can get hectic if one decides to pursue tertiary studies while working. From feeling exhausted after work to spending very little time with family and even quitting their current jobs to pursue higher education, studying while working is not easy. Despite that, a tertiary qualification from a top-ranked university massively enhances your career by enabling you to gain promotion, jump jobs, update your skill set, or earn higher remuneration. If you’re hungry for those sorts of success, it’s high time you consider the Open & Distance Learning (ODL) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Ranked 129th in the QS World University Rankings 2023, UKM is a prestigious local university that has been awarded 5 STARS ratings in Overall, Teaching, Employability, Internationalization and Facilities. By pursuing your tertiary studies online through UKM’s ODL, you can continue performing at your current job and still gain a world-class education from one of the top universities in Malaysia. The best part is that all UKM’s academic programmes offered via ODL are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Currently, UKM offers three programmes via ODL, namely, Master of Education in Teaching English as a Second Language, Master of Education in Educational Technology, and Bachelor of Islamic Studies with Honours (Theology and Philosophy) with many other programmes soon to follow.
UKM offers three programmes via ODL
Online Distance Learning (ODL) @ UKMLearning no longer means you have to attend physical classes. Instead, ODL is fast becoming a norm in many countries, especially in the US and Europe. Even countries in Asia have taken up the mantle, with Malaysia being one of them. “Employers don’t care much about whether it was an online degree. Instead, they care about the school’s name,” K. Holly Shiflett, solutions director in global education at Wiley Education Services, said.Being a household name in Malaysia, UKM certainly passes that criteria.ODL is now recognized as the ideal solution for all working adults keen on pursuing higher education. Gone are the days when you had to rush to classes after work or quit your job to pursue a degree or master’s programme. UKM’s ODL removes those challenges and makes life easier by balancing studies, career and family. For ODL students, the classes are conducted entirely online with proper and complete self-instructional materials with interactive learning activities. Each course provides dynamic types of content using suitable learning strategies with the best guidance from trained lecturers. But that’s not all. Each ODL student would receive adequate support to make his or her learning journey seamless. Be it issues pertaining to administrative needs, the library, student learning portal, finance, IT support, counselling or general ODL helpdesk, UKM ensures its ODL students are well-taken care of.In ODL programme classes, attendance is not compulsory. However, for some reason, if you are unable to attend the online class, you can re-watch the recorded video version. This flexibility ensures you don’t abandon your work to attend the classes you paid for. Also, working adults usually tend to be exhausted after a long day at the office. By taking an ODL program, you don’t have to rush to class while trying to beat the traffic. Instead, you can join the class on your smartphone, tablet or laptop, from your office, car or anywhere else. It's that simple. Self-Instructional Materials in ODL
Students can access learning materials through learning management system (LMS)
Enrolling in any ODL programme in UKM will expose you to active learning and self-learning. You will have access to comprehensive learning materials and resources as well as interactive activities, including self-check exercises and feedback through a learning management system (LMS). The LMS has been designed to serve as a self-explanatory approach for the students. For example, the topics in each course have been arranged to provide students with a constructive learning experience from start to finish. Furthermore, students can self-check their progress from time to time with the aid of the monitoring system in the LMS. This incredible feature ensures students are well-equipped with the necessary knowledge and help them gain a smooth learning experience.In addition, throughout the study process, students will have plenty of opportunities to interact with peers from across the country and beyond via online discussion threads. On top of that, students would gain an excellent learning experience from UKM’s professional lecturers, who are highly skilled in delivering quality education, ensuring you acquire the best possible learning experience through ODL. They can also engage in in-depth discussions with their lecturers through synchronous and asynchronous meetings. UKM is well aware of how hectic work can be for working adults. Hence, the ODL classes are held on a fortnight basis over the weekends or after working hours on weekdays. Each class lasts about 2 hours with a total of 12 hours within a semester/course. Below is a recap of why you should consider taking UKM’s ODL programmes;

Flexible - Learning can take place anywhere, anytime and anyhow

Accessible - Study entirely online without having to be on campus. Applications are now open for direct intake in June 2020. You can read more about it by clicking here and also check out our FAQ article by clicking here.Image via Universiti Kebangsaan MalaysiaNow, what better way to know about the programme than from the students themselves? Afterschool had the wonderful opportunity to speak with not one, but two students currently pursuing their bachelor’s degree at UKM under the International Degree Programme!Siti Anis Natasya binti Ahmad Tarmizee, 19, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Genetic. Hilda Helena binti Abdul Halim, 20, is pursuing a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at UKM. Curious about what the programme entails? See what they have to say below.
How did you come to know about the university before enrolling?
According to Siti Anis Natasya, she heard about the university after one of her friends said that she was enrolling in it. She studied the locations of both campuses, what courses are offered in each, the facilities and certification of the courses that she was applying for and found that the information was everything a good university would have.Hilda Helena considered her university options based on what her ideal employment prospects could look like and if the university matched her academic and professional interests.
What attracted you to pick this university? How did UKM stand out to you?
Siti Anis Natasya cites the reputation of UKM and its ranking as one of the top universities in Malaysia as the major reason for her choice. She believes that studying in UKM can put her on a better level, as a high-reputation university is sure to produce high-reputational graduates.Similarly, Hilda Helena also credits UKM’s academic reputation for her choice and feels that it is a place that would help her prepare for post-university life in the real world by being in a diverse student body. Since most of the professors have real-world experience outside of academia, Hilda Helena feels that she has developed personal growth beyond the classroom knowledge.
How convenient is your campus in terms of accessibility, location, transport etc.?
For Siti Anis Natasya, the campus is very convenient as she does not need to go out frequently to get anything she needs because UKM provides all the facilities, especially those catered for students. As the campus is located in a rural area, it is also not too busy, which proves it a peaceful studying environment. On top of that, students are also provided with free buses for us to travel within the campus. Food is also available everywhere on the campus, and the prices are quite cheap. Siti Anis Natasya notes that this is definitely a plus for food lovers like her!Hilda Helena also highlights the facilities provided by UKM such as the library, students’ health centre, accommodation, sports and recreation centre, and student society. Internet connection is provided everywhere on campus. She claims that the green landscape of UKM provides an environment that is conducive to a learning environment. Everything comes in handy and with spaces that enlighten and educate, there is a little need to step a foot off the campus.
How would you describe your course to a 17-year-old?
Siti Anis Natasya, who is currently studying Genetics, describes it as a course where student learn about heredity, the differences and resemblances between organisms, how they are affected by environment, and of course how they are controlled and developed.Hilda Helena, on the other hand, is studying Teaching English as Second Language (TESL). TESL teaches the students the basic approach towards making the courses more effective, teaching methodologies and learning techniques for English. She adds that TESL grants you the eligibility to teach English at both private and government schools.
What words of advice would you give to those who are intending to pursue the same course as you?
Siti Anis Natasya’s advice goes for anyone interested in Genetics: “I would say, go for it. It might not be that well-known, but I bet this course is very fun for those who love to explore new things. To be honest, learning all of this is very mesmerizing as we go into the very details and we find out how amazingly the organism works. You will realise that the smallest thing you learned about in school can be something so valuable that you will appreciate how amazing it is.”Hilda Helena touches on why students should choose TESL: “You should pick this course if you enjoy it because someone interested in the course will engage more with it and be better at the subject. Make sure that your choice of the course is part of a well-considered long-term plan. Besides that, do establish good communication with your professor, review your material before and after class, have proper time management and take care of your body.”Interested yet? Before going down the rabbit hole however, do you know the differences between the UKM International Bachelor Degree Program & the courses offered by UPU? There aren't many, with students being in the same class and graduating with the same degree. In short, this new programme finds itself as a beacon of hope for students, one that does not require the arduous process of applying via UPU, and one that seemingly has, and whisper it quietly, and added advantage over it’s more domesticated sibling course. Some MUST KNOW details of this course include:

Students have a chance to join the Summer Programme or Student Exchange Programme for a month at several overseas universities that have established educational ties with UKM, located in Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Mexico, Germany and the United States.

Lower entry requirements compared that placed by UKM for applications through the UPU.

The courses are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), similar to those offered during UPU

All courses offered in line with current and future industry demands

Entry in September 2018 will be the same as applicants who got in via UPU.

Students can apply for PPBU, PTPTN or other external study loans.

This year sees 45 courses across 12 faculties being offered to students, a huge jump from the 27 offered in 2017.
