If you’re looking for an education that fits your busy schedule, Open University Malaysia (OUM) is a top choice for working adults and lifelong learners who need flexibility and accessibility without having to compromise quality. With OUM’s innovative online learning approach, students can balance their studies with work, family or personal commitments effortlessly.
Why OUM’s Online Learning is a Game-Changer
One of OUM’s biggest strengths is its flexibility. Many students, like Shindhu A/p Sevanthiappen, a Bachelor of Accounting graduate, appreciate how online classes eliminate the hassle of commuting or sitting through traffic jams. Additionally, if students were to miss a class, all lectures are recorded to ensure that students can catch up at any time. As Johari bin Selamat, a Diploma in Islamic Studies with Education graduate, puts it, “OUM’s flexibility helps me stay on track no matter what.”With branches in every state across Malaysia except Perlis, OUM ensures that learning is accessible to students wherever they are. This flexibility allows them to take their physical exams in different states if necessary, making it particularly convenient for those who need to relocate or travel during their studies. “This accessibility was the key reason why OUM became the ideal choice for me,” shares Surenthran A/L Sevanthiappen, a Bachelor of Information Technology graduate.OUM’s quality of academic support further enhances the learning experience. The university provides well-structured learning modules and helpful resources, including the digital library with over 20,000 printed books and 190,000 e-books — making online learning more manageable and easier for students to navigate.
“The resources provided to us were a lifesaver, especially during the pandemic when online learning was the norm,” shares Khairunnadzrah binti Subari, a Diploma in Early Childhood Education graduate.

A New Standard for Online Study
Managing work, family and education at the same time can be challenging, but OUM’s flexible learning structure makes it much easier to balance. Frances Wong, a Diploma in Early Childhood Education graduate, says “I was able to efficiently manage my time through online learning and was able to continue my studies without it interfering with my job.” As Khairunnadzrah points out, the classes on the weekends also provided her great opportunity to learn while maintaining a full-time job. While Surenthran admitted to being sceptical about the idea of online learning at first — uncertain whether it could truly match the standards of traditional learning — he found that OUM had set a new benchmark in online education. “Its robust learning system combines flexibility with quality, offering a seamless and rewarding educational experience that helped me grow academically, professionally and personally.”
A Supportive Learning Environment
At OUM, the supportive learning environment goes beyond academics. Lectures often organise extra learning sessions before exams, focusing on key topics and giving students a boost of confidence and support.
“They guide us through exam preparation, offer valuable tips and provide us with much-needed emotional support,” shares Shindhu, highlighting the dedication of OUM lecturers towards its students’ success. “OUM lecturers are very approachable and always ready to help students — offering guidance during and after class, offering us guidance and support every step of the way.”
OUM student clubs also add a vibrant touch to the online learning experience, ensuring students can still enjoy the social aspects of university life.
“The clubs created opportunities for online students like me to connect in person through gatherings and events. They were fun and gave me a chance to meet my peers and build meaningful connections,” shares Surenthran.

Word of Wisdom for Prospective Students
For those uncertain about pursuing online education, students like Surenthran advise staying committed and focused on assignments and exams. “Online learning can be challenging but the sense of achievement at the end is worth it. So, no matter what, be positive, keep doing what you’re doing and don’t give up.”Khairunnadzrah also encourages everyone to take the leap, emphasising that age is never a barrier to education. “Having a degree is a valuable asset for personal and professional growth, so just go and pursue that education no matter what age you are.” OUM offers a unique and flexible learning experience that combines accessibility, strong academic support and a student-focused environment.
