Nutrition and Dietetics

Nutrition is the science on how food, nutrients and other dietary components affect growth and development in health and disease. Nutrition science also examines the environmental, socio-cultural, psychological and behavioural aspects of food and eating. Consumer concerns on food and water safety, food quality and regulations are important issues addressed in nutrition. The Bachelor of Science (Hons) Nutrition offered by IMU encompasses all these and other central issues of nutrition. These programmes provide students with a good grounding in basic and nutritional sciences, as well as equip them with state-of-the art skills to pursue careers in industry, education, health promotion, research and journalism, to name some examples.

Psychology

Due to the versatility of the discipline, psychology is fast becoming one of the most sought after subjects among University students in countries such as the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia. A similar trend is being observed in Southeast Asia as the contributions of psychology to the health, education and corporate sectors become more widely recognised. The small group teaching in IMU along with the individualised attention positively enhances students’ learning. Undergraduate study in psychology at IMU also provides a sound basis for further professional training and research at the MSc or PhD level in psychology. Our graduates have successfully transferred to both local and international universities to further their education in their specialised fields. The psychology programme at IMU provides the important intellectual and applied tools for those considering careers in management, law, education, social work, public relations, and other health-related professions.

Medicine

What we do in IMU is to help you achieve your dream. We'll make you a good, technically competent and more importantly a caring doctor. The 8 IMU outcomes make it explicit that we'll help you do just that. We emphasize professionalism and ethics, and we strive to maintain the high ideals of Medicine as a noble profession. The science of curing a disease or lessening physical pain is not always the most important aspect of the doctor-patient relationship. Patients come to visit doctors for many reasons, and sometimes it is for emotional support and kindness, for empathy, for openness with someone they can trust and respect. In time to come, when you become a doctor, you will always be a doctor: because of the special and unique doctor-patient relationship through most harrowing and fragile moments, and through life and death.

Biomedical Science

As long as new strains of diseases emerge, causing a detrimental effect on the health of our communities, biomedical science will play an important role in healthcare delivery.

Correct diagnosis of disease is imperative. Patients’ lives rely greatly on the results of clinical laboratory investigations conducted by capable biomedical scientists.Similarly, biomedical scientists are essential in the field of biomedical research, a sector at the forefront of the Malaysian government’s push into developed nation status. It is also a field of endeavour that first world nations put a premium on.

As such, biomedical science is a profession that will continue to expand especially in Malaysia where there has been rapid growth in the healthcare system.

At IMU, the biomedical science degree programme is mapped to the international standards set by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), UK.The competencies required for a successful career are mapped out and students are able to track their progress as they advance.

Chiropractic is a branch of healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the bones, joints and muscles of the body, especially involving the spine, and the effects of these conditions on the nervous system and health in general. Chiropractic practitioners (also referred to as chiropractors) commonly treat musculoskeletal symptoms, such as back and neck pain, headaches, pain in the arms or legs, and many other conditions. Chiropractic offers patients a hands-on approach to healthcare that is drug-free, including patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors utilise many common medical tests, such as clinical examination, x-rays, and blood tests, to determine the most appropriate care for each patient.

The primary objective of chiropractic evaluation is to locate disorders of the segments (vertebrae) of the spine, known as “subluxations,” in which the movement and/or position between adjoining vertebrae is restricted and/or misaligned. Chiropractors correct subluxations using “chiropractic adjustments,” sometimes referred to as “spinal manipulations,” by applying specific forces to the involved joints using the hands or an instrument. A chiropractic adjustment restores the abnormal movement and/ or position of the affected joint, which reduces the strain on the surrounding tissues. Thus, correcting subluxations alleviates pain and muscle tightness and permits healing. Chiropractors are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, stress management, and lifestyle counselling, but they do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. Many chiropractors also use physical therapy modalities, such as massage, ultrasound, electric and heat therapy, as well as the application of structural supports like tapes and braces. When chiropractic care is not the best treatment option for a patient’s condition, or co-management with another healthcare provider is warranted, chiropractors are trained to refer patients to other members of the healthcare team. IMU is the first and only University to offer the complete Chiropractic educational programme in Malaysia as well as in all of Southeast Asia.

Bachelor in Digital Health (Hons)

Ever wonder how new drugs and vaccines are discovered? Why there are improved and accelerated drug testing, better diagnostic capabilities, and the availability of foods which enhance nutritional values? This progress has tremendously improved healthcare and is viewed by many scientists as only a beginning to the great era of medical biotechnology. Scientists believe that the availability of “targeted therapies” for diseases and individuals should dramatically improve drug safety and efficacy, and the development of predictive technologies may lead to a new era in disease prevention, particularly in some of the world’s rapidly developing economies. This sound rationale holds great potential and promise in the field of medical biotechnology.

The IMU Medical Biotechnology programme has incorporated key features to prepare the modern Medical Biotechnologist for challenges beyond tomorrow. These features offer an appreciable advantage to students as there is significant emphasis on concepts and theories important for creating a stable platform to develop technical know-how and skills. The technical skills of the student begins with learning in a controlled laboratory environment. As the student progresses, he/she will be taught to think and solve problems analytically through modules that were specially designed for them to make independent decisions. Furthermore, IMU has a myriad of expertise in the field of medical and pharmaceutical sciences. The faculty members are already engaged in active research work, providing a suitable environment for the medical biotechnology student to experience the thinking, planning, application and discussion related to research.

Nursing

Nursing is a unique profession, now more broadly defined as both an art and a science. In today’s challenging healthcare environment, the qualified, professional nurse combines knowledge (theory), skill (practice), creativity and intuition to tend the sick, comfort the grieving and support the desolate. Nursing is a specialised profession that focuses on caring, nurturing, educating and research within the healthcare system. Those who are willing to learn, who possess leadership qualities and have a strong desire to care for and improve the quality of life of the sick should consider pursuing a course of study in Nursing. The nursing degree at IMU aims to produce knowledgeable, skilled nurses with clear critical thinking skills who are caring, assertive, motivated and well-disciplined.

Pharmaceutical chemistry is an interdisciplinary science that deals with drug design and synthesis, drug formulation and testing, as well as the delivery of drugs in the body. In view of the increase in the occurrence of existing and new diseases, continuous work in the discovery of new drugs that have high therapeutic efficacies but minimal side effects is necessary. Pharmaceutical chemists play a significant role in this global effort in drug discovery and also in drug development. The IMU Pharmaceutical Chemistry programme introduces students to all aspects of the pharmaceutical industry, with a strong emphasis on the detailed understanding of the physical and chemical properties of chemical compounds as well as their reactions. Students are trained in the application of modern information and scientific technologies in drug development, safety and efficacy studies. Elements of team work, communication and lifelong learning skills are incorporated into the curriculum throughout the programme in order to prepare graduates who are versatile and adaptive in the future places of employment, which are not only limited to the pharmaceutical industry.

Traditional Medicine

Chinese Medicine approaches health from a holistic manner in terms of prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. The range of treatments include herbal therapy, acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, tuina, bone and spine manipulations, dietary therapy, exercise therapy like qigong and taijiguan.

In Malaysia, traditional and complementary medicine is big business with herbal imports being 3 to 4 times the value of western medicine. Naturally, the Ministry of Health recognises the importance of Chinese Medicine and is implementing policies related to training and registration of practitioners with the aim of integrating Chinese Medicine into the national healthcare delivery system.

IMU’s Chinese Medicine programme comprises both western and Chinese Medicine subjects. It is an outcome-based approach, whereby students develop clinical skills during their junior years, with early clinical attachment to prepare them for a successful career. As the programme is fully conducted in English, our students get to pursue career opportunities not only in Malaysia but on a broader, global scale.

"I have a dream." These iconic words from Martin Luther King Jr. echo the aspirations of many, including Lim Zi Jie, who envisioned working in a hospital — donning the white robes of a dietitian, managing patients’ conditions, and guiding them toward healthier lifestyles.

That dream first took shape during a secondary school biology class, where Zi Jie discovered her fascination with how the human body transforms food into energy.

"At that time, I was wondering how our human body can be so powerful to help digest our food and use it as the source of energy," she says.

Fueled by this newfound passion, she began researching universities after graduating from secondary school. Her search led her to the International Medical University (IMU), where she found the perfect programme to turn her aspirations into reality. “I’ve compared a few universities, but I found that IMU’s Dietetics with Nutrition courses suit me the best, as IMU can be said to be the best private university for dietetics courses, and the programme structure is conducted by experienced lecturers.”

Zi Jie’s interest in nutrition began in secondary school after a biology class on the digestive system.

Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree at IMU and the Support That Shaped Zi Jie’s Path

Studying at IMU provided Zi Jie with a well-rounded and supportive environment. While the campus was smaller compared to others, it offers all the essential facilities for students to thrive, including an atrium, student lounge, café, e-learning lab, and library. The flexible timetable stood out to her, as it allowed her to juggle academic commitments alongside extracurricular activities and events.

The programme itself was enriched by strong academic support. IMU’s mentor-mentee pairing system allowed each lecturer to guide a small group of students, monitor their progress, and offer assistance with any challenges. “During my internship in my final year, I was struggling with a concept, and my mentor took the time to explain it clearly and share her experiences.”

Additionally, the senior-junior support system at IMU played an essential role in Zi Jie’s journey. She often sought advice from her seniors, who shared study tips and strategies that helped her along the way.

While the campus support systems were crucial to her experience, it was the personal mentorship from her lecturers that truly shaped Zi Jie’s academic and personal growth. Among them, Dr Chen Seong Ting, a senior lecturer in her programme, stood out as a guiding force.

Having had the privilege to work closely with Dr Chen during her undergraduate research project, Zi Jie fondly remembers how she guided her every step of the way. “She is a very supportive lecturer who answered my questions in detail, ensuring I was on the right track.”

Dr Chen not only encouraged Zi Jie to present her research at the prestigious Malaysia Dietitian Association Conference in 2022 but also played a pivotal role in getting her first research article published in the IMU journal.

Beyond academics, Dr Chen imparted life-changing advice. She always emphasised the importance of being mindful, detailed, and confident — qualities that Zi Jie carries with her to this day. “I’ve been influenced by this lecturer a lot, changing from an extreme introvert to someone who is more meticulous and outgoing.”

Dr. Chen’s guidance also extended to helping Zi Jie explore job opportunities and providing career advice that she still treasures today.

For Zi Jie, IMU's Dietetics with Nutrition programme stood out for its strong reputation, integrated curriculum, and experienced lecturers.

Gaining Practical Experience and Valuable Skills

As part of the Dietetics with Nutrition programme at IMU, Zi Jie was required to complete a year-long dietetic practicum, which provided invaluable hands-on experience across three key areas: food service, community, and clinical settings.

Her journey began at Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor, where she focused on food service management. There, she learned the intricacies of food procurement and the entire kitchen operation, from sourcing ingredients to serving meals to patients. “We had two assignments during that time — creating vegetarian menus for diabetic patients and working on a quality improvement project to enhance the food service.”

Next, her community placement took her to Klinik Kesihatan in Seremban, where she provided outpatient counselling to patients. She and her group also gave a talk on diet control for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to pregnant mothers, an experience that deepened her understanding of public health nutrition.

Her clinical placement was at Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar in Seremban, a teaching hospital partnered with IMU. Here, Zi Jie managed patients with various acute and chronic conditions requiring dietetic-related services. “All these experiences allowed us to learn how to be competent dietitians, providing the best care by using up-to-date information and recommendations.”

This comprehensive practicum solidified her passion for dietetics, leaving her more determined than ever to pursue a career in the field.

Beyond technical skills, IMU’s environment nurtured the development of vital interpersonal qualities that would prove crucial in her career. One such skill was time management. Zi Jie, as part of a pioneering team, helped launch Malaysia’s first-ever student-led dietetic clinic at IMU during her final year. The experience was demanding, as it required balancing hospital work with late-night discussions about the clinic, but it was also gratifying. “I always enjoyed learning outside of lecture classes, as it helped me strengthen my soft skills and broaden my social circle.”

Another key skill Zi Jie developed was leadership. Taking on the role of group leader during her final year, she guided her team through assignments and projects. “I became more thoughtful and careful, balancing team dynamics while making sure everyone was aligned toward the same goal.”

Today, Zi Jie is a dietitian at Gleneagles Hospital Johor.

Advice for Aspiring Dietitians and Reflections on a Meaningful Career

For those considering a path in Dietetics with Nutrition, Zi Jie offers some thoughtful advice: passion is key. “It’s important to ensure that you are truly passionate about food, nutrition, and people.”

The programme requires a deep understanding of human physiology and the complex relationship between diet and diseases to provide accurate and effective patient care.

Curiosity and a commitment to staying updated are equally essential. Zi Jie emphasises the need to stay informed about the latest diet trends and research, noting that patients are often well-informed about their conditions. “Sometimes patients know better than us about certain diseases, so make sure you’re ready for that.”

Even activities like reading nutrition labels during grocery trips can contribute to better understanding and offering informed recommendations to patients. For aspiring students, the key is to keep exploring, stay curious, and embrace learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom.

As she reflects on her current role, Zi Jie’s dedication to her profession shines through. Now working as a clinical dietitian in a private hospital, she manages patients with diverse medical conditions, counselling them toward healthier lifestyles. “It’s incredibly satisfying when I persuade patients to make changes and see them progress,” she says, noting that these moments serve as her motivation to continue striving for excellence in her field.

Beyond the hospital, her work extends into the community, where she joins her team in conducting health screenings. Using tools like the body composition analyser, she assesses individuals’ muscle and fat levels and provides tailored advice. These interactions remind her of the broader impact dietitians can have—not just on individuals but on the community as a whole.

A Dream Realised: Lim Zi Jie's Journey to Becoming a Dietitian

The road to discovering one’s true calling is often winding and littered with uncertainties. For Vicki Lai, the journey of unveiling fulfilment was about rediscovering a childhood fascination, blending her love for creativity and being brave enough to turn it into a meaningful career.

As a counsellor specialising in expressive arts therapy, Vicki combines her Master’s training in psychology with her passion for creative expression to thoughtfully aid her clients in navigating their mental health. From studying English to embracing psychology, Vicki’s journey reminds us of the power of persistence and self-discovery.

An Early Fascination with Psychology

Vicki’s intrigue for the human mind sparked at a young age.

“I was always amazed by how the mind works,” she says, recalling her childhood fascination with crime shows and their deep dives into human behaviour, understanding people and their motivations.

However, societal perceptions and a lack of exposure to psychology as a career path made it difficult for her to pursue this passion. “My parents weren’t aware of how psychology could become a career.” With her family encouraging her to pursue a more conventional education and career path, Vicki opted for a degree in English Language and Literature, a subject she was equally passionate about but had more certainty in. “Language was the only thing I was sure of back then.”

Vicki pursued her Bachelor's degree at the University of Nottingham (Malaysia campus). Yet, during her undergraduate years, Vicki’s fascination with psychology stubbornly persisted. She even took electives in psychology and explored linguistics, which gave her insight into how the mind processes communication. Her time at Nottingham also exposed her to a rich academic culture and a supportive environment that encouraged exploration, both of which would later guide her transition to counselling.

Rediscovering Psychology Through Counselling

Upon completing her degree, Vicki still couldn’t shake the pull she had toward psychology. However, she acknowledged that pursuing a second undergraduate degree wasn’t feasible, thus turning to counselling as a way to re-enter the field. “After graduating, I felt like I still had to get back to the psychology field. Counselling was the only option for me to get into psychology without taking another degree.” This decision set her on a new path, one that reignited her passion for understanding the human mind.

While researching on a suitable Master’s in Counseling, Vicki found a programme offering an expressive arts therapy module that caught her attention.

“IMU was the only institution offering this module, so that’s why I picked this programme.”

Studying at International Medical University was a transformative experience for her, the course combining a rigorous academic experience with hands-on, experiential learning. “Every week, we participated in practical sessions where we were both clients and participants. Experiencing the therapy myself helped me understand its power,” Vicki recalls.

With an extensive and stimulating learning experience, Vicki not only deepened her knowledge in psychology but also confirmed her passion for integrating creativity into mental health practices. Her time at IMU helped bridge the gap between her academic background and unique career aspirations, equipping her with the tools to make a meaningful impact.

A Day in Vicki's Life: Counselling, Workshops, and Creativity

Newly graduated and finding her footing in the world of counselling and therapy, Vicki’s life is as dynamic as it is rewarding. On top of completing her counselling internship and facilitating workshops as a freelancer, Vicki also tutors English through online classes. “Everything feels everywhere right now, it’s all freelance and part-time.” Yet, with all these varying projects keeping her busy, Vicki continues to maintain a level head and performs her duties with passion and professionalism.

Vicki embraces a multitude of methods in her art therapy, ranging from sandbox therapy to drawing and flashcards, ensuring clients can explore their emotions in personal and unique ways. One particularly memorable experience involved a client struggling to express himself verbally. “I gave him figurines and a sandbox, and he spent nearly half the session moving all the sand to one side,” Vicki shares. When she asked why, he revealed feelings of loneliness and isolation, explaining, “No one has ever tried to step into my world.” For Vicki, this moment was a poignant reminder of the profound breakthroughs that creative therapy can bring. “Even if it’s just 20% progress, I’ll take it—that 20% can mean everything to someone.”

Beyond one-on-one counselling, Vicki designs and conducts workshops in group settings (often corporate or educational), thoughtfully tailored to the needs and intentions of the participants.

“Sometimes they’re clear about their goals, like team-building or stress relief. Other times, I create general programmes to make the sessions approachable for everyone,” she explains.

Through her work, Vicki has encountered clients from diverse backgrounds, which has allowed her a broader perspective and the opportunity to test her adaptability. “Every day is different— a different accent, different customs. I have to constantly update myself to connect with my clients better.”

Whether she’s working with clients individually or in a group setting, Vicki is dedicated to creating safe spaces for expression, self-exploration, and healing.

Personal Growth: Find Strength in Sensitivity

Vicki’s journey wasn’t just about professional growth, it also involved significant personal transformation. For a large part of her life, Vicki struggled with being too sensitive, a trait that she identified as a weakness. “I used to hate being sensitive. People would ask me all the time: ‘Why are you this emotional?’” she shares. This perception carried on to her journey into psychology and counselling, where she found herself feeling intense emotions during group discussions and explorations, even shedding tears in some instances, and then feeling insecure about how she reacted.

However, through thoughtful advice from a lecturer, Vicki saw a pivotal shift in her perspective. “She asked me, ‘Why don’t you embrace it? This is something you need as a counsellor: the ability to feel and connect with others.’” Dispelling the correlation between sensitivity and weakness, Vicki began to gain confidence in what she spent her whole life perceiving as a flaw. “Now, I see it as a gift, it helps me feel and connect with people more intensely.” While this breakthrough has benefitted her work, it has also allowed her to embody a more positive perception of herself.

Looking Forward: Vicki’s Vision and Words of Wisdom

Vicki’s future aspirations remain clear. She has set her sights on expanding her cultural horizons, aiming to interact with and help people from all walks of life. “I don’t picture myself staying in Malaysia. I want to expose myself to different backgrounds and environments.” Yet, her commitment to psychology and mental health remains unwavering; if anything was certain for Vicki, it is that she will dedicate the foreseeable future to counselling. “One thing I know for sure is that I’ll always be in this field, doing work related to psychology and mental health.”

Vicki offers valuable advice to those considering a career in counselling or therapy. “You need to have passion because this line of work requires so much of you as a person,” she emphasises.

She calls attention to the importance of forming genuine connections and having sincere care for every client, the profession going far beyond using applied theory but also being wholeheartedly present for those in need.

Acknowledging how much she’s grown over the last few years, Vicki knows that the road ahead is full of possibilities. Her story is an important reminder of how embracing your unique strengths and interests can lead to a deeply fulfilling life. Though Vicki is open to unexpected opportunities, her guiding principle will remain to be her passion for mental wellness.

“If you have the passion, hold on to it. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it when your heart is in the right place.”

From Literature to Therapy: How Vicki Lai Found Her True Calling

Have you ever felt like you’ve hit a brick wall early in life, unsure of how to move forward or breakthrough? Doubting every decision and eventually resigning to the familiar mantra, ‘Let’s go with the flow’? If so, you’re not alone.

In the grand scheme of life, education is not just a thread but the foundation that holds everything together. Unravelling its mysteries is challenging, but it reveals the depth and breadth of our potential.

For Kiran Kaur, this journey of discovery began at 16 when she started questioning her lifelong ambition of becoming a doctor. Despite her passion for helping others, the theoretical side of human biology didn't captivate her as she had hoped. Sensing her uncertainty, her parents took her for a career test, which revealed psychology and counselling as the top choice, followed closely by pharmacy. Coincidentally, a clinical psychologist visited her high school shortly after, which gave Kiran an unexpected confidence that this could be her path. Although she was drawn to psychology, her parents’ concerns about its emerging status led her to choose pharmacy instead, influenced by her interest in chemistry.

Today, Kiran is a clinical psychologist that is based in Malaysia.

As she entered university, the challenge of decision-making only intensified. Kiran grappled with her choices, making the wrong decisions not once but twice. As her interest in chemistry waned during her Foundation in Science at IMU, she decided to pursue chiropractic, a field introduced by her cheerleading teammates and drawn by its uniqueness. But just a week into the course, she was hit by a wave of depression and anxiety, realising the mistake she had made.

“In a heartfelt conversation with my parents, we revisited the idea of studying psychology and spoke to the administrative office to switch courses, and the rest is history,” she says.

It led her to a fulfilling and successful career path in psychology, proving that finding your true calling often requires navigating through uncertainty and exploring various avenues. “In hindsight, it feels like psychology chose me, and our connection has been a perfect match ever since.”

Bachelor of Science in Psychology at IMU

“Whenever people ask about my time at university, I always say that those three years at IMU were the best three years of my life, even up until today.”

With just 20 students in her psychology class and a dedicated team of eight lecturers, the personalised attention she received was invaluable. Her lecturers went above and beyond, offering extra support outside the classroom, and each student had a mentor for personal and academic guidance.

There was no love lost between the students and lecturers, as Kiran recalls her favourite educators at IMU for various reasons. She particularly values Ms Puvessha Jegathisan for her deep passion for trauma work and empathetic guidance. Ms Puvessha’s support and encouragement were pivotal during Kiran’s studies, and their reconnection during her Master’s programme was a meaningful full-circle moment as they collaborated on a thesis about childhood trauma. “There were many times when I felt not good enough, stressed out, and unmotivated, but Ms. Puvessha would always remind me of my ‘why’—the reason I chose this field.”.

Kiran graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with First Class Honours from IMU University.

Mr. Alexius Cheang was another standout figure, known for his warmth and enthusiasm, he played a key role in connecting Kiran with valuable contacts. Dr. Shamala Ramasamy, the advisor of the IMU Psychology Club, was equally prominent, offering a nurturing presence and imparting essential lessons on professionalism and respect that have greatly influenced Kiran’s career.

Beyond the impactful educators, Kiran describes the campus as modest and hospital-like in atmosphere, yet always vibrant. The cafeteria’s food choices were complemented by occasional food trucks, and the nearby Sri Petaling area offered additional dining options. The curriculum at IMU was comprehensive, covering a broad spectrum of psychology topics, from industrial to clinical and community psychology. “When I started my master's programme at HELP University, my classmates were surprised at how much of a foundation I already had theoretically about some of the topics in clinical psychology,” she says.

In her final year at IMU, Kiran completed her internship at MPS Psychological Services under the mentorship of clinical psychologist Evelyn Soong. The internship was a turning point for Kiran, confirming her choice to pursue a master’s in clinical psychology. It offered hands-on experience in therapy and assessment tools and deepened her ability to reflect and introspect — a skill that she found crucial in her Master’s programme.

Outside of academics, Kiran was deeply engaged in extracurricular activities, serving as a flyer and later as the captain of the Draco cheerleading team. Her time with the team was filled with cherished moments, including late-night practices and even later-night mamak sessions, rich with heartfelt conversations. Moreover, as the president of the IMU Psychology Club, she had the chance to lead initiatives and raise awareness about important but often taboo topics, such as a stage play on domestic violence and a PTSD art exhibition.

All these experiences gained from IMU were instrumental in helping Kiran mould key skills and qualities. Involvement in the psychology club sharpened her leadership and organisational skills, teaching her the value of meticulous planning and effective communication, exemplified by her successful organisation of a mental health awareness week. Additionally, the supportive learning environment at IMU enhanced her critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, allowing her to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

Extracurricular activities like cheerleading further developed her teamwork, resilience and time management skills. Balancing academics with cheerleading honed her ability to juggle multiple responsibilities. This skill proved invaluable in her Master's programme, where managing classes, client work, research and exams required exceptional perseverance and time management. These experiences collectively laid a solid foundation for her future endeavours.

Kiran was awarded the Tun Zahir Merit Award in May 2021 while at IMU for being the top student on the Dean's list.

Master’s in Clinical Psychology at HELP University

Studying for the Master of Clinical Psychology at HELP University was a highly enriching experience for Kiran. With a small class size of just 15 students, she benefited from personalised attention and a collaborative learning environment. One of the most engaging aspects was the interactive approach to learning, where students actively participated in creating course materials, making classes more dynamic and enjoyable. The real highlight, however, was the faculty. Their passion and expertise shone through in their teaching as they skillfully blended theoretical knowledge with real-world examples from their clinical practice, making the learning process both inspiring and practical.

She used her Master’s experiences to refine and develop skills such as introspection and reflection, which shaped her career trajectory. Initially daunting, this practice involved confronting brutal truths about herself as both an individual and a therapist. However, it has proven crucial in managing complex therapeutic relationships. “For example, when a client’s story triggers my own emotions, introspection helps me stay present and maintain professional boundaries.” This self-awareness allows her to stay present and maintain professional boundaries.

Another key skill Kiran cultivated is the balance between self-confidence and humility. She recalls advice from her second external practicum supervisor, Ms. Sarah Zehan, which left a lasting impression. Struggling with acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Kiran was overwhelmed by the need to master the approach.

Ms. Sarah told her, “You don’t know everything, but you know something, use that.”

This advice helped Kiran combat self-doubt and trust her training and instincts while remaining open to ongoing learning and seeking supervision when necessary.

Kiran's approach in the therapy room is grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles, which she tailors to meet each client's unique needs.

Pearls of Wisdom for Aspiring Psychologists

Pursuing clinical psychology is a challenging yet enriching journey. Kiran advises aspiring students to immerse themselves in what genuinely excites them, as passion will be the anchor during the inevitable tough times. The programme tested her in every way — workload, time management and emotional resilience. Yet, these hardships were essential for her growth as a therapist and person. “So whether it's a specific area of psychology or a type of research, let your curiosity guide you.”

Additionally, Kiran highlights the value of active class participation, joining clubs and engaging in workshops.

“As I was constantly involved in so many different areas, not just academics, it made my tertiary education more colourful.”.

She also underscores the importance of building strong connections with lecturers and peers. “Find a few people that you can rely on in the programme because this group of people will be your biggest support as they’re the only ones who can truly understand the difficulties you will face.”

Embracing the Role of a Clinical Psychologist

Kiran is now fully immersed in her role as a clinical psychologist stationed at a BPO company through a private practice. Her work is dynamic, involving individual and group therapy sessions, as well as conducting mental health workshops and training. What sets her role apart is the shift-based schedule, including night shifts — a challenge she initially feared but now embraces. Despite her unconventional hours, she finds joy and fulfilment in her work, excited to make a difference no matter the time of day. In addition to her full-time role, she also freelances as an associate clinical psychologist, providing therapy to a diverse range of clients in private practice.

Finding Her Path: How Kiran Kaur Discovered Her True Calling in Psychology

Emlynne Tham’s path to psychology wasn’t linear. Initially drawn to medicine, a gap year spent on the stage as a theatre kid sparked a new direction. This artistic detour led her to discover psychology, a field that combined the scientific rigour she craved with the human-centric approach that resonated with her creative side.

Emlynne’s decision to become a clinical psychologist was deeply personal. “I knew that I wanted to become a clinical psychologist specifically as my grandmother suffered from dementia in her final years, and that was the end goal,” she says.

Enter IMU University, Malaysia’s pioneering private institution dedicated to medical and health sciences education. IMU has consistently strived to bridge the gap between science and other disciplines, including business, technology and social science—this focuses on fostering well-rounded leaders with diverse perspectives perfectly aligned with Emlynne’s aspirations. The University’s School of Psychology and Social Sciences, with its psychology programme specifically designed to prepare students for postgraduate clinical studies, became the ideal launchpad for her chosen career path.

Finding the Perfect Fit at IMU

Emlynne fondly recalls her time at IMU. The programme’s small size—with a class of only 30 students—fostered a close-knit environment where lessons were engaging and personalised. The curriculum felt well-structured and prepared her not only for postgraduate studies but also for the workforce.

The faculty, with their diverse backgrounds and expertise, played a crucial role.

“It was clear that the majority of them were experts in their field and were great educators as they were generally willing to provide support and engage with us outside of the classroom.”

While Emlynne appreciates all her instructors at IMU, Dr. Sam Jeng Mun holds a special place in her memory. Although Dr. Sam only taught her during her first year, their occasional cafeteria lunches left a lasting impression. Years later, after Emlynne entered the workforce, a former IMU mentor informed her about a new Master of Clinical Psychology programme at Taylor’s University, where Dr. Sam was part of the faculty. Despite the long gap in communication, Emlyne reached out to Dr. Sam and their connection reignited.

“Out of all the guidance she’s given me throughout the years, from opening doors to the endless encouragement, the one thing I’m most grateful for is the trust she had in me.”

Emlynne is also the founder and project manager of the Children's Home of Hope (CHH) Project for the IMU Community Service Club.

IMU wasn't just about academics for Emlynne. It was a place where she discovered hidden strengths. “Academic skills such as research and writing are a given. But outside of that, the first few things that popped into my mind were confidence, initiative and leadership — all qualities I’ve somewhat had since I was young, but truly blossomed during my time in IMU.”

Participating in various student activities and spearheading projects from scratch instilled in her a sense of fearlessness and a willingness to take on challenges she once deemed insurmountable. These newfound qualities proved invaluable as she embarked on her Master's.

Pioneering the Path at Taylor’s University

Taylor’s University, a top private university in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, became Emlynne’s springboard to pursue her masterMaster’ses. Her experience as part of Taylor’s inaugural two-year Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) cohort was akin to being a guinea pig. There were inevitable bumps on the road as the programme found its footing. Despite these teething issues, Emlynne found the learning environment and content delivery excellent. By the end of the first semester, she felt well-prepared to enter the real world, seeing actual clients who, surprisingly, kept returning for sessions — a testament to the effectiveness of the programme's approach.

Emlynne graduated from Taylor's University with Distinction in a Master of Clinical Psychology.

Taylor’s facilities impressed Emlynne. The beautiful campus offered a variety of dining options, and the on-campus psychology clinic, designed explicitly for MCP and Master of Counselling students, provided a fantastic learning environment. The clinic was well-equipped with a wide range of assessment tools, play therapy materials and dedicated therapy rooms for conducting sessions.

Emlynne was exceptionally fortunate in terms of clinical supervisors. Throughout her two-year programme, she had three supervisors, each with unique supervision styles and therapeutic approaches. This diversity allowed her to learn significantly more than she would have with a single supervisor.

During this demanding programme, Emlynne oversaw more than 40 cases, gaining valuable experience and developing resilience, a quality that would prove invaluable in her chosen career path.

“It’s been almost a year since I’ve completed my masters, and to date, I still think that MCP was probably the toughest and most trying thing I’ve done in my life. As rewarding and fulfilling as the career is, the programme demands a lot of time and effort, overcoming hurdles and fighting off urges to quit. Now every time I’m faced with something difficult, I remind myself that if I could finish MCP, I can do anything.”

Apart from her full-time role as a clinical psychologist, Emlynne also serves as a guest lecturer at IMU University.

A Flourishing Career

Today, Emlynne is a registered clinical psychologist under the Malaysian Allied Health Professions Council. She works at a private practice and an international school, where she predominantly works with neurodivergent children.

"My day-to-day generally involves doing consultations and diagnostic interviews with parents, conducting psychological assessments and writing reports. I occasionally conduct 1-1 parent training and psychotherapy sessions.”

That's not all. Emlynne's story took another turn as she returned to IMU, this time as a guest lecturer. Dr. Sam, unable to take on a teaching role due to her commitments, recommended Emlynne for the position. This full-circle moment allowed Emlynne to share her experiences and inspire future generations of psychology students.

Based on her experiences at IMU and Taylor's, Emlynne's advice to aspiring psychologists is simple: Find your ‘why.’ Once you have a clear purpose, approach your studies with an open mind and give it your all.

“Allow yourself to enjoy the process and all the ups and downs that come with it. When the going gets tough, remember that you’ll most likely only be at this stage of your life once, so make the most out of it.”

Emlynne Tham: A Journey into Clinical Psychology through IMU and Taylor’s

Medicine is one of the most popular courses, not just in Malaysia but globally. It is a highly respected profession and is deemed as a noble job considering the challenges that come with it.

As much as many want to pursue medicine, the tuition fee is extremely costly. The estimated tuition fee per year for a medicine course in Malaysia can go up to RM130,000. No doubt, there is a cheaper option to pursue medicine which is through matriculation programme. But chances are that you might not get into medicine even with a CGPA of 4.0. Students are often given other biology related courses like marine biology.

If you are fixed on pursuing medicine, it is probably best for you to learn about the best private medical school in Malaysia, which is the International Medical University (IMU) located in Kuala Lumpur.

If you are enrolled in any programmes offered in the International Medical University (IMU), you will come to realize that the curricula is similar to the ones in other first class universities in Australia, Canada, US, UK, Ireland, New Zealand and China.
