As one of Malaysia’s top-performing A-Level colleges, KYUEM has been a transformative experience for Joel.Joel was over the moon when he found out he would be pursuing his A-Levels at KYUEM, his dream institution.Born and raised in Kuching, Sarawak, Joel Pang completed his SPM at SMK Batu Lintang in 2021. He was overjoyed to receive the prestigious Shell Scholarship, which allowed him to pursue A-Levels at KYUEM, his dream institution."Transitioning from an SMK school to KYUEM was a humbling experience, as most students here are already from private schools or boarding schools," he says. "As challenging as I found transitioning, it was an incredibly rewarding experience."
Studying at KYUEM
Joel’s two years at KYUEM were defined by a supportive community, dedicated teachers, and an environment encouraging personal and academic growth. For him, it was the people who made KYUEM truly special. From the start, Joel was surrounded by friends who pushed each other to achieve their best. This collaborative spirit was crucial as he adjusted to the steep transition from SPM to A-Levels. The shift, especially in Mathematics — where Mechanics posed a significant challenge — was initially daunting. However, he soon found his footing through KYUEM’s Peer Tutoring Programme, scheduling weekly one-on-one sessions with senior tutors."I remember being hesitant at first to sign up, but my first tutor, Xi Ting, really changed my perspective. She would share her own tips and tricks, as well as guide me patiently through each tough mechanic's question."Since then, Joel began stepping out of his comfort zone, forming study groups with friends to share resources and tackle tricky questions together.Throughout his time at KYUEM, Joel received incredible support from friends who constantly pushed each other to achieve their best. The teaching staff at KYUEM were equally remarkable. Joel often recalls how teachers like Dr. Linda, Mdm Pravinjit, Puan Sheila, and Puan Ashiha went above and beyond to support him. They were always approachable, answering questions both within and beyond the syllabus. One standout memory was when Joel sought help from Dr. Linda for an International Chemistry Olympiad problem. Although it was beyond the A-Level syllabus, she used her expertise and research experience to guide him. This kind of personalised attention was made possible by KYUEM’s small class sizes, which encouraged a more engaging and interactive learning environment. Joel especially valued how his teachers took the time to check on his understanding and treat students like family. Their constant encouragement, paired with small rewards like treats, helped keep him motivated and confident. With the unwavering support of his peers and teachers, Joel chose to focus on Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Further Mathematics for his A-Levels, knowing these subjects would be essential for his goal of pursuing Chemical Engineering. Thanks to KYUEM’s strong sense of community and personalised attention, Joel was predicted 4A*, setting a solid foundation for his future.Outside of academics, Joel was actively involved in student-led activities, finding the Student Services Department incredibly supportive of his initiatives. One of his key achievements was founding the first-ever E-Sports Club at KYUEM.Noticing a gap in student life, Joel pitched the idea to the department, which quickly helped him get the club up and running. With their support, Joel and his committee organised KYUEM’s first E-Sports Carnival, featuring games like Valorant, MLBB, Marvel SNAP and FIFA. Beyond the E-sports club, KYUEM’s vibrant and diverse environment allowed Joel to experience Malaysia’s cultural richness firsthand. From celebrating Hari Raya to Diwali, the school embodied Malaysia’s unity in diversity, where everyone came together to enjoy music, food, and laughter. Joel found the University Relations Department (UR) to be incredibly kind and caring and skilled in guiding university applications.
How KYUEM’s UR Team Guided Joel to Top University Offers
Joel received offers from some of the world’s top universities, including the University of Cambridge, Caltech, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania. None of this would have been possible without the support he received from KYUEM’s University Relations (UR) team. The UR department played a crucial role in his journey, offering guidance at every step of the university application process. One of the standout aspects of the UR department is their passion and dedication. They’re not just knowledgeable — they’re genuinely invested in the success of their students. Through nearly 40 hours of talks, UR helped Joel with everything from selecting the right courses to fine-tuning his personal statements. The team made sure he stayed on track with deadlines and ensured that his applications were submitted on time."They also ensured they write us the best recommendation letters possible by going above and beyond in understanding what truly makes us as a person."When it came to essay writing and application forms, Joel knew the UR team was always just an email or a knock away. Whether it was reviewing his personal statement or answering questions about CommonApp or UCAS, the UR team was there for him. They also organised mock interviews with companies like Elevate and MABECS, allowing Joel to prepare for the rigorous admissions processes.Considering all these factors, it's no wonder KYUEM students often gain admission into leading universities, just like Joel.Today, Joel is studying BS in Chemical Engineering at Caltech, a world-renowned science and engineering institute. "I’ve always been passionate about Physical Chemistry and Thermodynamics, and KYUEM helped cement that, first through the classes, where we learn real-life applications and secondly through engineering talks organised by the Engineering Society or UR who gave me a glimpse of what it was really like to be a chemical engineer."Joel is the only Malaysian accepted into the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) for the Class of 2028.
Joel’s Advice for KYUEM A-Level Students
For aspiring students considering A-Levels at KYUEM, Joel’s advice is simple: step out of your comfort zone and embrace new experiences. KYUEM offers a chance to explore different interests, so be curious and dive into things you genuinely enjoy. You might discover a new passion along the way.He believes that KYUEM is the perfect environment to explore different interests, so students should stay curious and dive into activities they truly enjoy. "Who knows? You might discover a new passion along the way."When facing challenges, Joel stresses the importance of seeking help. KYUEM has a wealth of resources available to students, and it’s crucial to make the most of them, especially when stress begins to build. He also reminds students not to compare themselves to others, as everyone has their own unique journey. The KYUEM Experience That Led Joel Pang to Caltech

On October 26, 2024, four 18 years old students from KYUEM (Shafryq, Muiz, Aqil and Liaw) - under the group name KY FLOPS (Financial Leaders Optimising Profitable Strategies), achieved the incredible feat of being crowned champions of the Young CEO Challenge 2024. With the theme Maximising Value: Investment Strategies for Tomorrow, the competition opened numerous educational opportunities in accounting and economics. It required in-depth analysis of financial statements, stock valuation, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) compliance within the corporate sector. As first-year A Level students with no professional background in accounting, stepping up for the Young CEO Challenge was no easy task. Their formidable competition made the experience even more daunting. This required all four students to step out of their comfort zones and explore the ACCA syllabus to tackle the questions presented with maximum accuracy. In the beginning, on September 22, 2024, the first stage of the Young CEO Challenge required participants to undergo a trading simulation orchestrated by the Professional Accounting Society (PACE). It consisted of five different stages, each influenced by varying circumstances affecting stock valuations. Despite initial doubts about KY FLOPS’ chances of advancing, they achieved an impressive 18.54% Return on Investment, securing their place in the next round. On the following day, participants faced a case study that required them to dissect, analyse, and resolve financial challenges faced by a fictional oil and gas company, Petron Sholl. Critical thinking and logical reasoning were vital in this round as they formulated innovative solutions to the issues presented. Despite having minimal prior knowledge of such scenarios, the team's eagerness to learn proved fruitful. They achieved an impressive score of 87%, qualifying them among the top eight teams for the final round. In preparation for the final round, held on October 19, 2024, the finalists were invited to a coffee chat session with experienced real estate investment managers boasting over 20 years of experience. During this session, they were presented with a case study focusing on Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs). The participants had to analyse real REITs in Malaysia, including Tower, Hektar, Atrium, and Amanahraya REIT. This task was particularly demanding as it required an in-depth understanding of local REIT-related issues. Against all odds, KY FLOPS delivered an exceptional performance during the pitching session, answering the panel’s questions with precision and confidence. To their delight, they were declared the champions, with Liaw Chong Ye earning the Best Presenter award. In conclusion, the remarkable success of KY FLOPS at the Young CEO Challenge 2024 demonstrates the power of determination, teamwork, and adaptability. Their journey, from novices to champions, serves as a testament to the value of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing challenges. Their victory not only highlights their immense potential but also inspires other students to pursue opportunities that foster growth and excellence.

Hari Batik: Celebrating the Art and Culture of Batik (29th July)

Hari Batik: Celebrating the Art and Culture of Batik

On the night of Wednesday, 26th June 2024, during semester break, the first discussion on planning the Prophet Remembrance Week (PRW) took place. This marked the beginning of months of preparation to celebrate Rabiul Awal, the month in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was born. The high committee of the Musolla community (MUSCOM) announced the launch of the inaugural PRW at KYUEM, Lembah Beringin, with meticulous efforts from all divisions of Muscom.Throughout his life, he faced numerous challenges, including the loss of his loved ones, rejection from his community, and physical harm. Yet he exemplified resilience, responsibility, trustworthiness, and gentleness in his teaching and spreading of Allah's message. He is the ultimate role model sent by Allah as a sign of His mercy. Allah describes him in the Quran: “And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:107).The week began with a casual 'sembang sirah' by Brother Hafiz on a Saturday night, increasing their knowledge of our Prophet’s background and life before the revelations were brought upon him (peace be upon him). This marked the start of the week, smoothing the curve of entering the blessed month and week, reaching its peak on the day of Maulidur Rasul.Throughout the Prophet Remembrance Week, they engaged KYUEM students with poster reflections on four key themes: bravery, integrity, trustworthiness, and compassion. Stories of the Prophet’s honesty and integrity inspired us to embody these values daily. Tirelessly, the research team began their work by looking for sources and necessary information based on the four themes of the characteristics of the Prophet. Consisting of only three members, they utilized their break time to assemble and organise it. The same enthusiasm can also be observed in the Prophet's sports team, where they reached out to a nearby agency for possible collaboration on archery and swimming classes. Also involved in the early preparation was the sales team, which they were tasked with arranging the sale of s'mores, part of which was for fundraising; this fitting into the PRW is due to the hadith “The best of the businessmen are those who are kind and honest.” (Al-Bukhari). This teaches us from the basics to practise business with honesty and integrity within all communities. During the sale, many words of the Prophet were displayed on the walls of the classroom where the s'mores were made and sold, serving as a ground for dakwah too.The bond of the sales members is undeniable as they synergised their energy and time to ensure that the pre-orders of s'mores were completed and delivered to customers safely. The event took place a few weeks after the registration of the juniors, and we aimed to create a harmonious ambience for the juniors to embrace. On the evening of 10th September, a swimming class was conducted as an interactive application of the Prophet’s sports, led by En. Sabtu, and was joined by 15 participants (boys only). It served as a checkpoint for deepening the bond between seniors and juniors while engaging in sunnah. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “And whoever loves my sunnah has loved me, and whoever loves me will be with me in paradise." At-Tirmidhi. The talk on Prophet Muhammad SAW was gone on the 9th of September with the title Prophet Muhammad: The Beacon of Compassion and Wisdom. It was a short session where students sit down and listen about our beloved prophet in their busy schedules. The talk well received, and it was ended with a congregated (jamaah) Isya’ prayer. To strive to remember and honour him will never be wasted in the eyes of Allah, no matter how small it is. Thus, a group of 12 members united to enhance the celebration of love for our Prophet by organising a qasidah night. The melodious qasidah enlivened the night as peers from both seniors and juniors gathered in the surau to express their deep appreciation for the Prophet. The event went smoothly, given that they faithfully practised for the night, posting teasers in the Muslim group as a means of promotion. The heavy yearning that encapsulated the audience was lifted temporarily when one of the main singers light-heartedly jested with the audience, and their off-pitch notes unexpectedly touched everyone’s hearts. The planning and execution of the Prophet Remembrance Week showcased the remarkable teamwork and dedication of the Musolla community at KYUEM. The research team contributed by researching and preparing content for the posters, while Syurel handled the preparation of the invitation letter and welcoming the invited speaker. The sales team was tasked with managing sales, while Syumul was responsible for designing and condensing the information into a three-part poster, and Syutask managed the printing, laminating, and pasting of the posters. This shows synchronised teamwork and effort from all members, who are high-spirited in contributing to the preparations for a week's worth of programmes and activities in remembering Muhammad (peace be upon him). Each member contributed their skills, from research and sales to the event’s organisation, fostering a spirit of unity and shared purpose. Through various activities, including sports and qasidah night, we deepened our understanding of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his values of bravery, integrity, and compassion. This celebration not only honoured his legacy but also strengthened the bonds among students, creating an Islamic atmosphere for all.

When Hanis Hanif decided to attend KYUEM for her A-Levels, she wasn’t just chasing an academic dream—she was going on a journey shaped by family inspiration and a passion for excellence. As her sister’s heartfelt encouragement resonated within her, Hanis aimed to forge her path to success at this prestigious institution.
“I was lucky to be offered a scholarship for A-Levels, which was a game-changer, giving me the freedom to choose my path,” she says.
Her sister's glowing endorsements heavily influenced her decision to attend KYUEM. Having experienced the school’s supportive environment, exceptional faculty, and vibrant community of high-achieving students, her sister’s insights painted a compelling picture. Hanis was drawn to the institution’s serene location amidst the lush Lembah Beringin jungle. Despite considering more bustling urban options like Taylor’s and Sunway University, KYUEM’s allure proved irresistible.Today, Hanis is currently pursuing her LLM Bar Training Course at Cardiff University, UK. Thanks to her boarding school experience in high school, Hanis's transition to KYUEM was smooth in terms of living arrangements. However, the academic shift from SPM to A-Levels felt like diving into the deep end. Additionally, navigating the language transition—starting in English, switching to Bahasa Melayu, and then back to English for A-Levels—posed a significant challenge. Yet, Hanis embraced these challenges as part of the adventure.
A Day in the Life at KYUEM
“My experience at KYUEM was like stepping into a world brimming with ambition and drive. The atmosphere was electric, with everyone striving for excellence and pushing each other to reach their full potential,” says Hanis. The learning environment was enriched by peers who were not only academically driven but also passionate about societal contributions, making every class a stimulating exchange of ideas.Beyond the vibrant student community, the lecturers at KYUEM were more than educators; they were mentors deeply invested in their student’s success. Hanis recalls a pivotal moment when the head of the exam department provided essential moral support and guidance during a challenging exam period, helping her refocus and plan for upcoming exams while discussing her university aspirations.
“Feeling the weight of expectations from both my parents and sponsor, his moral support and guidance were like a lifeline.”
At KYUEM, Hanis found mentors and guides among the lecturers who were deeply committed to her success.Additionally, Hanis appreciated the convenience of having her room, which allowed for focused study sessions without the distractions of a busy library. “I am all about hitting the books in my own space, so having our rooms at KYUEM was a game-changer for me.” In her second year, she enjoyed the added comfort of a private bathroom in a chalet. The catered meals and campus café provided both convenience and variety, ensuring students were well-nourished and ready for their academic challenges. In addition to academic learning, KYUEM is buzzing with activities, with something exciting happening every week. Weekdays are dedicated to rigorous study sessions and educational pursuits, but weekends offer the chance to unwind and recharge. The campus boasts various sports facilities, including tennis and basketball courts and even an Olympic-sized swimming pool, catering to students' diverse preferences.Initially cocooned in her room studying, Hanis realised that a solitary approach wasn’t the most effective way to learn. “As time went on, I discovered the importance of balance. I ventured out and tried my hand at new sports like volleyball and table tennis, spending my evenings honing my skills on the court.”Among the sports that Hanis participated in at KYUEM were volleyball and table tennis. She also made a point to participate in weekly club activities, which ranged from running marathons and painting sessions to cooking classes and visits to Parliament. Volunteering to tutor English at a children’s home was another rewarding experience she cherished.
Pathway to University of Bristol
For her A-Levels, Hanis chose a diverse mix of subjects: Economics, History, Mathematics and AS Physics, scoring impressive straight A’s. “Choosing these subjects was a mix of personal interest and strategic planning,” she says. With no specific A-Level requirements for Law, she had the freedom to tailor her choices to her strengths and interests. Mathematics and Physics were natural choices, reflecting her confidence and passion from high school, while Economics and History offered new intellectual challenges and broadened her academic horizons. This strategic selection not only showcased her versatility but also provided her with a solid foundation in analytical and problem-solving skills, perfectly aligning with her aspirations. This well-rounded academic background paved the way for her next academic milestone at the prestigious University of Bristol.Hanis's journey to the University of Bristol was significantly bolstered by the support she received at KYUEM.
“One of the key ways KYUEM assisted me was through the meticulous review of my statements.”
Her teachers provided detailed feedback, helping her refine her essays to convey her strengths, interests, aspirations, and aspirations. The HE team also guided her through the entire UCAS application process from start to finish. They demystified the complexities of the application system and provided comprehensive support, ensuring no detail was overlooked. Thanks to the personalised guidance from KYUEM’s HE team, Hanis felt well-prepared and empowered to present the best version of herself to the University of Bristol, ultimately securing admission to her desired institution.“Studying law at the University of Bristol is my passion, but it wasn’t always my intended path. It was actually during my time at KYUEM that my interest in law began to take shape, particularly through my A-level history studies.”Exploring historical events and learning how political and legal institutions evolved was eye-opening for Hanis. It sparked her curiosity about the principles behind modern legal systems. The way classes were conducted at KYUEM, especially by her history teacher, fostered an environment of open discussion and critical analysis. This nurturing atmosphere, combined with the use of various academic tools, laid the groundwork for her approach to critical thinking and writing in law.Hanis participated in a debate at Parlimen Malaysia.Hanis credits her success at the University of Bristol to three key skills she learned at KYUEM. “KYUEM fostered my critical thinking abilities,” she says, emphasising how dissecting complex issues and engaging in debates sharpened her analytical skills. Tan Hui Hui, a current student at KYUEM, attests to the transformative nature of the institution's competitive atmosphere. “The competitiveness created a healthy environment that motivated me to improve."Tan’s sentiment resonates with many students who initially perceived KYUEM as a fiercely competitive environment, renowned for its highly competitive academic atmosphere fuelled by the exceptional calibre of its students.Sharmmen Raj A/L Sanjeevraj pointed out the dual nature of this competitiveness, “While it can be stressful, especially nearing exam season, it also serves as strong motivation to consistently study and maintain high grades.”Beyond providing an optimal environment for concentrated study, complete with minimal disruptions, the institution also offers numerous opportunities for stress relief through a diverse range of extracurricular activities and club facilities.Enriching environmentAdam Iskandar Bahari shared how his four-month experience of joining the rugby team was incredibly fulfilling as it allowed him to delve into a sport he wasn’t very familiar with while opening up new perspectives and ideas. He also expressed gratitude for the myriad opportunities the institution provided him, highlighting initiatives such as Ted-X and the Elle Woods Project.“I organised a project at a refugee school in Batu Caves as part of the Elle Woods Project. This initiative serves as a catalyst for change within Malaysian communities where legal knowledge may not be accessible to most people.” This not only bolstered Adam’s confidence but also sharpened his social and networking skills.Similarly, Sharmmen reflected on his role in the Student Council, “I vibe really well with the other members and the Council has given me an avenue to raise student concerns with KYUEM management as well as enabled my team and I to organise a slew of student activities for us to unwind and have fun!”Meanwhile Tan, as President of the Initiative Club, shared her experiences and challenges in arranging a field trip to BASF PETRONAS Chemicals in November 2023. She remarked, “The planning part may not be fun, but a successful trip to a manufacturing company that offers STEM career insights to the student population makes every effort worth it.”Exploring self-growthBeyond this, students also experience considerable growth in various aspects of their lives.Tan shared, “Being away from home has prompted me to develop self-discipline. I've learned to recognise opportunities that resonate with my interests and when to exercise restraint, cultivating a sense of balance and purpose."Adam echoed similar sentiments, emphasising his journey of self-discovery. “My career goal is to work in Foreign Affairs. KYUEM's multicultural environment has enabled me to interact with people from all over the world, preparing me for my future endeavours as a diplomat."Sharmmen also reflected on how he was able to swiftly realign his academic pursuits with his interests, transitioning from Data Science to Economics and Public Policy in his second year at KYUEM. He remarked. “KYUEM's supportive environment and diverse opportunities have been instrumental in shaping my journey."Looking back, moving forwardAdam reflected on his time at KYUEM as truly memorable, emphasising how it had enabled him to evolve into an independent learner, cultivating resourcefulness and proactive habits. He credited much of his development to the invaluable guidance provided by his exceptional teachers.Tan’s journey, on the other hand, displayed a profound transformation from viewing grades as the sole measure of success to cherishing personal growth and achievements. “It took me some time to adapt and acknowledge that one’s academic grades do not define one’s abilities,” she confessed. “Surrounded by ambitious people, it gave me the courage to dream big and take action to achieve my goals.”Sharmmen's time at KYUEM taught him the importance of personal academic growth and self-directed focus. “I would have to say that you shouldn’t compare yourself to your peers, as is often the case in secondary school. Just focus on yourself, as cliche as that sounds, and focus on your personal academic growth.”As these students reflect on their time at KYUEM, it is evident that beyond the initial perception of a highly competitive environment, the institution fosters a culture of growth and self-discovery. As they move forward, they carry with them the invaluable lessons learned at KYUEM, shaping their paths toward success with confidence and determination.

Bangsawan Night 2023

On October 28, 2023, 37 Muslim students of KYUEM embarked on a field trip to the Nasyrul Quran Complex and Islamic Art Museum Malaysia. This Islamic Educational Field Trip was organised by Musolla Community (MUSCOM) 23/24 with the objectives of learning about the practises and history of Islam in an engaging and reflective way while incorporating the teachings of the Quran and Hadiths every step of the way.Upon arrival at our first destination, the Nasyrul Quran Complex, the world’s second-largest Quran production centre, we were gathered inside the hall to receive a briefing from our tour guide. They also introduced us to Yayasan Restu, the back-bone organisation of the Nasyrul Quran Complex. We kicked off our visit here with a brief explanation of the 10-step Quran production method. We were amazed to know that a Quran required at least 8-10 years to be produced. Then, we were given a chance to roam around the complex, seeing multiple ancient Quranic scriptures, artefacts, and replicas of Sahabah’s swords from decades ago. After that, we listened to a detailed talk about Quran production before we had our lunch at the cafe. After congregational Dhuhr prayer at the surau, we continued our journey to the Islamic Art Museum Malaysia. Before we arrived there, our president held a reflection session about the previous visit with all the participants in the bus using Padlet, making sure that everyone learned something from the visit. When we arrived at the Islamic Art Museum Malaysia, we took some pictures together first before we were divided into three groups with a tour guide for each group. The tour around the museum took around 60 minutes, during which we were introduced to many antique and ancient artefacts from all around the world, including weaponry, defensive equipments, and jewellery. The artefacts are mostly from Islamic eras and regions. The tour guides explained each item in detail, which sometimes sparked some in-depth conversations between the tour guide and the students regarding its uses and relations to Islam. There are also miniature replicas of the world’s famous mosques and monuments. The trip ended successfully. We then stopped by Mid Valley to have some dinner and pray. Overall, the trip managed to achieve its objectives, explicitly and implicitly. Although it was tiring, the camaraderie between seniors and juniors made the trip more enjoyable and fun. Around 8 p.m., all participants went back to KYUEM by bus.

MUSCOM FIELD TRIP 2023

For countless young scholars embarking on their educational journey, the allure of a vibrant campus culture is just as vital as the academic rigour of the institution they choose to attend.Maung Shi Min Flonna spoke at length about her experiences at KYUEM, a place where she experiences a thriving culture in which both students and lecturers embody qualities of self-driven motivation, unwavering enthusiasm and support for teaching, besides a strong commitment to collaborative initiatives that extend beyond campus borders.“Here at KYUEM, ambition is the norm. Students are constantly striving for self-improvement, both academically and in terms of personal development. This collective drive creates a vibrant and forward-looking academic environment.
Performing experiment in Puan Umi's lab!
“The faculty are more than just educators; they are enthusiastic mentors. They approach their teaching roles with genuine zeal, and this enthusiasm extends to their willingness to explore innovative teaching methods alongside their students. For instance, my chemistry teacher, Puan Umi Azura, not only shared with us details of her project on electrolysis but also prepared materials to allow us to perform it in her class!”She also emphasised the importance of collaboration at KYUEM. Whether it's embarking on new projects or establishing clubs, students and lecturers readily come together to brainstorm, innovate and bring ideas to life. This collaborative spirit extends beyond the classroom and campus, encompassing initiatives that aim to make both the institution and the wider community a better place.Participation in clubs and organisationsDuring her journey at KYUEM, Flonna actively engaged with various campus clubs and organisations, which significantly enriched her college experience. One notable involvement was her participation in the annual sports carnival and racquet tournament. She mentioned that the sports carnival is a unique and exciting event where students are divided into different coloured 'houses'. This move created a sense of camaraderie and competition, as they competed in various sports including netball, football, table tennis and athletics.“This experience allowed me to strike a balance between academic rigour and the thrill of sports competition. It was not only a refreshing break from classroom studies but also a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow students from different academic disciplines, fostering a strong sense of unity and school spirit.”Unique traditions at KYUEM
Raya Celebration in KYUEM
Flonna praises the unique traditions at KYUEM that set it apart from other colleges. The most distinctive of these traditions is the formation of a close-knit community due to its boarding school nature. Unlike many other colleges where students commute from home, KYUEM fosters a sense of togetherness that goes beyond the classroom.
HERO's Clothes Donation Drive
One of the key distinctions is the continuation of activities beyond regular school hours. While students at other colleges typically leave after classes, at KYUEM, the day extends with various activities, sporting, cultural clubs or community engagements. This extended engagement provides ample opportunities for students to bond and interact outside of academic settings. The emphasis on extracurricular activities and the variety of options available contribute to the formation of a vibrant and dynamic community. The sense of belonging and camaraderie at KYUEM is particularly noteworthy. The students and staff support each other, creating a harmonious environment where everyone is family. The close interactions and shared experiences contribute to making it feel like a second home for its students.Important values and principlesFlonna states that KYUEM holds the values of open-mindedness and a non-judgmental approach dear to its core. The institution places a strong emphasis on these principles, fostering a culture where they are actively practised and encouraged.
Paper Roller Coaster Building Competition with Men in Black (Group Name)
“We value open-mindedness by being receptive to new ideas, perspectives and experiences. This openness to learning and embracing the unfamiliar is actively encouraged. It promotes an environment where individuals are curious, willing to explore new horizons and engage in critical thinking.”KYUEM also values non-judgment. It fosters an environment where individuals are free to express themselves, take risks and learn from their mistakes without fear of harsh criticism. This non-judgmental approach encourages personal growth and innovation. These values combine to create an atmosphere of tolerance, intellectual curiosity and continuous learning. They contribute to the development of well-rounded students who are not only academically accomplished but also open to new ideas, adaptable and compassionate in their interactions with others. Personal and academic growthFlonna also emphasises the profound influence on both her personal and academic growth, offering opportunities for skill development, community engagement, and a broader perspective on the world.
Pre-Med Club's Booth Opening
“In my capacity as the vice president of the Pre-Med club, I had the privilege of organising a series of impactful events. These experiences allowed me to develop essential soft skills, including communication and organisational abilities. Coordinating trips to the National Heart Institute, arranging a world organ donation talk and spearheading a blood donation drive exposed me to the healthcare profession.“I had the chance to interact with professionals such as doctors, nurses and researchers. This not only prepared me for the working world but also broadened my horizons, providing insights into the medical field and the importance of community health.”Preparation for higher educationAs a scholar under Yayasan Khazanah, Flonna has the privilege of being supported in her application to universities on her sponsor’s exclusive university list. KYUEM has played a significant role in preparing her for higher education, particularly in terms of university application and guidance. The school's University Guidance Counsellor, Puan Kasthuri and Ms Asiah, have been instrumental in her higher education preparation. They offered valuable guidance and support throughout the university application process. Their expertise and experience were crucial in helping her understand the nuances of applying to universities, regardless of their location. The institution goes a step further by offering individual support, through which counsellors assist students with personalised advice and recommendations based on their academic and career goals. This tailored approach ensures that each student is well-prepared for their specific higher education path.Memories not to be forgottenOne memory from KYUEM that will forever hold a special place in Flonna’s heart is the time spent in the RC (Resource Centre).“From the countless hours of studying with friends during free blocks and after class to the 'Brain Freeze' sessions we hosted at the empty wall in the RC, each moment in this space was filled with a sense of camaraderie and a shared pursuit of knowledge.
Fundraising Night
“But more than the physical surroundings, it was the friendships forged in the RC while chasing our dreams that I will carry with me always. It has become a place where not only knowledge but lasting bonds were cultivated, making it a memory I'll treasure forever.”

Maung Shi Min Flonna spoke at length about her experiences at KYUEM, a place where she experiences a thriving culture in which both students and lecturers embody qualities of self-driven motivation, unwavering enthusiasm and support for teaching, besides a strong commitment to collaborative initiatives that extend beyond campus borders.

This three-day, two-night expedition is a practice and training expedition in preparation for their full, qualifying expedition which will take place in late January around Gopeng in Perak, as part of their DofE Silver Award. The trial expedition is led by our Award Leader, Mr Boler, who instructs and trains the groups as they practise navigating a tricky route through the wild countryside of plantations, durian orchards and rainforest around Lembah Beringin, Kerling and Kalumpang in Hulu Selangor. Before heading off on the expedition, the Silvers underwent 8 weeks of training in campcraft, map reading and compass navigation, catering and nutrition, first aid and safety procedures. Now all is ready for their trek. The Silvers, 14 of our junior students (aged 16-17) in two groups, departed from the Kolej guard house at 3pm on Friday and trekked along the road through kampung Lembah Beringin in light to heavy showers which then eased off and stopped. Mr Boler directed Silver 1 in their navigation of the tricky network of back roads, and Mr Azhar, DofE Assistant and Medical Officer, and Mrs Boler accompanied Silver 2, with Matt Hunt driving the vital support van carrying drinking water supplies and medical equipment. Once through the kampung, Silver 2 then led the navigation, with Mr Boler overseeing, through wild open scrubland, up and down steep slippery slopes, on narrow paths cut through thick vegetation and along winding palm oil plantation tracks to the first campsite, a kampung football field between oil palm blocks at Ladang Kerling, arriving about 7pm. The Silvers rapidly pitched their tents then settled in for a dry and relaxing evening cooking dinner, games and chat. Mr Boler camped with the students for security and we had a pleasant, undisturbed evening and night. On Saturday, after a pleasant, mostly dry, night, the Silvers struck camp and departed up the winding road to Kerling at 8:45am, accompanied by Matt, Cindy Tham and Mrs Boler, with Khairol driving the support van all day. Once at Kerling town, with Mr Boler once again instructing, they crossed the railway line via a narrow foot motorcycle bridge, which gave a fabulous view of the landscape of mountains to the east, and then trekked up through the kampung back roads to Kerling Hot Spring and a rest stop at the side of Sungai Kerling. From the hot spring the gallant Silvers trekked uphill into the edges of the forested hills and along narrow paths through the rainforest leading to mixed orchard, durain orchards and fish lakes of Mai Integrated Farmland, stopping beside one of the large fish lakes for lunch. After lunch (Matt and Cindy returned to college) the Silvers trekked through the sawmills and chicken farms to the main road, Route 1, then north up to Kalumpang and east again to the campsite at Pasir Puteh Resort, accompanied by Lynda, Azhar and Mr Boler. The day was mostly dry and clouded with some sunshine and we arrived at the campsite at about 5pm, where a pleasant, dry night was spent, Mr Azhar stayed over at the campsite. On Sunday morning, after breakfast, the Silvers were taken by lorry at 9:30am to the main Kalumpang Resort where they enjoyed the challenge of completing an obstacle course winding its way up and down the muddy hillside. Once back at Pasir Puteh it was time for lunch and striking camp before trekking back down via Route 1 to the Five petrol station, accompanied by Cindy and Lynda. After a prayer and drinks break, the Silvers trekked south through the plantations, accompanied by Azhar and Mr Boler giving instructions again, all the way back to Ladang Kerling where the expedition finished and the bus, driven by Asri, was waiting to take them back to college. Expedition successfully completed! Along the way, one Silver suffered from a little heat exhaustion on Saturday and Sunday and was rested in the van for some of the journey, but completed the weekend successfully. Another student suffered pains in his back and shoulders from carrying a heavy backpack, something which he will need to prepare better for on the Qualifying Expedition. A few other students suffered blisters, and on the Sunday afternoon Silver 1 and Mr Boler were attacked by wasps, two of the students suffering stings which were treated by Azhar with no further problem. These are the normal challenges faced on a tough expedition like this, but, with good preparation, no serious illness or injuries resulted. Next stop, the Qualifier!!

The CPN celebrated the diverse and rich cultures in Malaysia. The night started sharp at 8 pm at the Great Hall. The festivities began once the Principal, Mr. David Vroege accompanied by the Senior Leadership Team took their seats in the hall. The first agenda of the night was a speech by the principal, followed by the recitation of prayers and a welcoming speech by the Director, Ishwaar Alagesan. The night continued by showcasing the various cultures in Malaysia through the talents of the KYUEM students. There was a multitude of performances including but not exclusive to singing, traditional dances, and traditional instrumental performances. Students of batches 25.0 and 26.0 were seen swaying and singing along to the melodious and rhythmic songs. All in all, it is safe to say that the Cultural Performance Night was a great success. The primary objective of Cultural Performance Night was to cultivate a sense of community engagement, wherein junior students actively contributed to the preparations for this event. Furthermore, CPN offers students a unique platform to showcase and nurture their talents. This opportunity not only bolsters their self-confidence but also facilitates social interaction. The central theme of the evening, titled “ Jewels of the Past: Treasure Unearthed,” not only symbolised the harmonious unity of Malaysia’s diverse cultures but also had special relevance for the four houses at KYUEM: Sapphire, Diamond, Topaz, and Garnet, as they came together as a cohesive group. This theme was subtly interwoven throughout the event, with hints presented through the colours representing these gems and discreetly embedded in the actor’s’s dialogues. In conclusion, the Cultural Performance Night (CPN) proved to be a remarkable event that not only celebrates our rich tapestry of cultures but also fosters essential elements of community life. Although the event itself was brief, the benefits like enhanced interactions among students and a strengthened school community spirit made the event worthwhile. With the Cultural Performance Night’s unmistakable significance in mind, this event should be retained for years to come.

On 20th October 2023, KYUEM’s batch 26.0 hosted their Cultural Performance Night 2023 (CPN) presenting a night of fun that emphasised unity amongst diversity.

KYUEM’S GOT TALENT!

The first thing you hear about the appeal of KYUEM is its university connections and ability to provide you with a bright future but the second is the range of events that the school holds. Amongst these are Housetrips, which are among the most anticipated events of the year. This Garnet Housetrip allows the house members, which we refer to as Garnetrons, to have team building experiences and strengthen the bonds between juniors, which we refer to as baby dragons, and the seniors. On October 21st, 2023, the long-awaited day finally arrived, when 98 eager Garnetrons embarked on a journey to the Eco Venture Resort & Retreat in Semenyih. Despite most students initially feeling sleepy and fatigued, their enthusiasm quickly took hold, infusing all the Garnetrons with adrenaline following a hearty breakfast of traditional Nasi Lemak. Before diving into a day full of activities, we split the Garnetrons into 10 groups where each group has a chant, a group name, and a leader who is a “garnet shadow”. Garnet shadows are essentially baby dragons who are shadowing the current hi-com to gain experience and the skills needed to lead the house in the near future. Our day kicked off with an engaging water balloon activity. The ten groups lined up with significant gaps between them. Each group's first member threw a balloon over their head, and the person behind them had to catch it without popping it. This chain continued until the last person. The group with the most balloons intact emerged as the victorious team. Moving on to the second activity, it was called puncture pipe. This activity comprised of the teams sending 3 swimmers and retrieving 3 balls from the pool and when done, the other teammates would have to drop a ball into a tube punctured with holes and fill it with water using a small cup whilst covering the holes with their body parts. The team which is able to make the 3 balls float to the top of the tube first is declared as the winner. Other than that, to further solidify the bond between Garnetrons we decided to play an engaging game of water polo in the swimming pool where we were all randomly separated into 2 teams. This allowed us to communicate and interact with people outside the 10 teams. I believe this was the highlight of the trip as everyone was striving to win but also not being so competitive to break any bonds between Garnetrons. Soon after we moved back to the hall for a delicious Thai cuisine lunch. During this time, there was ample free time where some Garnetrons went on ATV rides, or some just went walking around the campus to get a breather. Some Garnetrons even went to the playground to unleash their inner child. In addition, there were multiple stores there that sold a variety of snacks and drinks which by observation, Garnetrons were dying for. After the much needed break, we moved on to our last activity of the day, DIY Rafting. This activity needed the Garnetrons to create their own rafts out of 3 tyres, a few ropes and 3 tubes. They were given a mere 5 minutes to make the raft which was followed by 4 or 5 of them sitting on the raft whilst the others swam and propelled the raft to the end of the river and back. The fastest raft would emerge from this tiring activity, victorious. We then wrapped up our event and left the retreat and made our move to IOI City Mall to have some dinner and allow Garnetrons to enjoy themselves after the hard work they did that day. Reflecting on the Housetrip, we consider it an unequivocal success, strengthening the bonds among Garnetrons and fuelling their excitement and House spirit. This experience will undoubtedly drive us to excel in future House activities. Overall, this trip has ignited a passion and determination within our students, empowering them to thrive in all upcoming House endeavours.
