IACT College has always been about discovering and nurturing creativity. As part of the effort to inspire endless creativity within oneself, Project ImPossible was launched with the aim of encouraging everyone to excel in their field and document their achievement. To date, Project ImPossible has seen many alumni and students make waves locally and internationally in various industries ranging from marketing, communications, advertising and entrepreneurship to performing arts and entertainment. To document such achievements, Project ImPossible featured a series of articles in the form of “ImPossible Story”, highlighting the journey behind the success of alumni and students from IACT College. One of its alumni who made waves overseas and caught the attention of many in the local entertainment scene is singer-songwriter Ariff Abu Bakar, who goes by the stage name Ariff AB. A graduate of Diploma in Broadcasting, Ariff found fame as he was starting his study at IACT College.“IACT College is special as it gives you that positive vibe and enables you to achieve whatever you want in life. I had the opportunity to meet many people with different ideas. The lecturers are really cool and you get to know and be assured of what you’re in for,” said Ariff, citing his time with the college. Ariff also fondly remembers a lecturer, the late Miss Suhana (Communication lecturer and singer), whom he thanks for his success in his music career. “She believed in connecting with the students and always brought out the best in them. “She encouraged me to let loose and explore my creativity in music and be confident about my art. I really appreciate the support from friends and lecturers from the college back when I first started my music career,” said a grateful Ariff.Another alumna who is making waves locally is Gina Yap, local novelist and president of the Malaysian Writers Society. Gina graduated with Diploma in Advertising and Marketing, and published her debut novel Eksperimen Cinta in 2010.When asked about her days with IACT College, she remarked that the college is one of a kind. “During the first week in college, I met my lecturer Penny Low. Three weeks into my first semester, she put us on a huge stage in front of Tun Dr Mahathir, some TV camera crew and a huge crowd at the Mid Valley convention hall. We had to present a skit and I asked myself, ‘Can I really do this?’,” Yap said. “It forced me out of my shell. I felt out of place even among my coursemates and I started asking ‘what on earth am I doing?’ “It is by asking those questions and finding an answer that I came to where I am today. So, I would like to thank my lecturers for believing in us,” she added. Besides honouring the success of its alumni, IACT College also celebrates the “ImPossible” spirit by featuring stories from current students. To find out more about Project ImPossible, visit iact.edu.my/projectimpossible.

Held at Hilton Hotel, Petaling Jaya, the 208 graduates from the Certificate in Communication Studies, Foundation in Media Studies, Diploma and Degree programmes in Communication, Advertising, Graphic Design, Multimedia and Broadcasting were splendid in their robes anticipating and celebrating a moment of relief on the completion of their studies.Victoriya Titova, IACT College 2017 valedictorian delivered an inspirational and poignant speech to fellow graduates in addressing the challenges of facing the many uncertainties after college. “College has shown me that being uncertain is very much like having a blank sheet of paper or an empty page in a book. If you can get rid of the expectation you have on how that sheet of paper or empty page should turn out like - you’ll get some pretty spectacular results most of the time.”“What I’m here to say is that this uncertainty is what makes it all worthwhile - the power we have to change or not to change for that matter, our situation and our perspective, of not only our surroundings but also of our innermost selves. This uncertainty means that we can create almost anything we envision, and perhaps even make a positive difference.”Victoriya Titova majored in Graphic Design because she believes that design is universal to people around the world despite the language barrier. With search engines like Google and Yahoo gathering user data like age, location, interests and browsing habits, advertisers can now do more targeted advertising! Social media platforms are also slowly taking over the traditional advertising medium, making advertising content a lot more diverse than ever! For over 40 years, IACT College has been about preparing students for the advertising and creative communication industry through their well-known diploma and degree programs. How does a Creative Communication Specialist college like IACT College make sure the training provided to her students stay relevant in this ever evolving industry? What makes both, teaching and learning creative communication at IACT College different from the rest?“What’s unique is the way we deliver our material. We use Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a method for our students. Students are assigned real-life projects, many of which come from our industry partners. Be it a marketing or brand development project, or an integrated advertising/marketing communications campaign, or a PR campaign, or a video production, or a journalism feature, or a market study of a contemporary and current issue, they are all real life projects.” Lawrence Chan, Chief Operation Officer and lecturer in Advertising shares. This opens the student a window to what is going on in the industry, and helps them build better industry connections even as they study in IACT College. Students are trained to not only better at their area of studies, but also in dealings with their future employers and customers! “All in all, these real-life projects more than prepare our students for the real world of communications.” Lawrence Chan adds.Besides Project-Based Learning, IACT College also prides itself by training sharp and creative minds. With its’ tagline “Creativity Begins Here”, the college values creativity and encourage students to think out of the box, and push themselves further in generating ideas for marketing, advertising and communications. ”Creativity is a set of skills and knowledge to solve problems; When a problem occurs, it motivates an innovation. That whole process to me is creativity”, advertising student Ethan Cheang shared. “In IACT College we learn to let our creativity flow by going through what we call ‘the incubation process’. I found this process useful and crucial because what I want to do here is to relax my brain in order to trigger my subconscious mind. Usually when my subconscious mind starts calling me, it is when my brain illuminates.” It is such ideas that sets an idea apart from another! Creativity is, no doubt, THE skill to master in this ever changing industry!Founded by the advertising industry in the 1970s, IACT College has an unbreakable bond with the creative industry. Besides having guest lectures from the industry, practitioners are also invited to assess the subjects offered every now and then to maintain industry relevance. “This practice is another thing sets us apart. We cannot afford to teach our students one thing when what is going on out there in the real world is something very different! Guided by their lecturers and industry mentors, our students gain valuable in-depth knowledge and practical experience of their subject, while learning the value of teamwork and collective problem solving.” Lawrence Chan says.Another advertising student, Hilmi Mustaffa, who won Champion in United Nations Creative Expressions Competition with his idea “First Aid Biker” said, “A fool-proof method to learn in IACT College is to have consultations with the lecturer and ask for their guidance, after all they are from the industry and are happy to guide, and they are here to ensure that our creative work is up to professional standards. Besides that, I also subscribe to various sites and forums like adweek, adage, and adporn from reddit to name a few, in order to keep myself in touch with what is new in the industry. These are my main sources of inspiration and motivation!”Click here to learn about IACT's May Intake & their 96% placement industry placement rate*.

Creativity in The Ever Changing Advertising World

‘The story is the most important thing of any production,’ says Chin Hor, who has shot documentaries for National Geographic and History Channel. ‘The DOP is an extension of the director, so you need to know the story that you are shooting for.’ The 6 hours industry workshop that was held on Thursday, 9th of March was organized as part of the BA (Hons) Media, Culture and Communication Year 3 broadcasting module. It was opened to all Broadcasting students in IACT College to join. 16 pairs of earnest eyes looked on as Chin Hor stood beside his Canon C300, trying to capture wisdom from his 11 years of experience in the documentary industry.Chin Hor stressed that a good DOP must have good grasp of camera fundamentals such as exposure, focus, framing, colour and contrast. The use of tripod and caring for sound are equally important. He shared that in his experience, there were industry professionals who neglected such fundamentals, resulting in subpar or unusable video footage.Even though lighting in documentaries is not as complex as other forms of video productions, it is still key in getting good shots. ‘Where does the sun rise and sets? The sun is the main light source in any outdoor shoot. The position of the sun determines colour temperature and also how the shadow will be cast. If it’s indoor, look for windows and test out all available lights.’ Chin Hor showed how the matte box on his camera can be used to cut flare; explained the use of polarizers and filters for camera lens; and demonstrated the proper way of holding reflectors.‘Remember, the job that you are doing is an audition for the next one!’ Chin Hor exclaimed. He insisted that good habits are part and parcel of good work ethics. Some habits he practiced: regular maintenance and cleaning of equipment, take pride in all your work (regardless of payment amount), learn to work independently but be a team-player, pay attention to your surrounding so you can think two steps ahead, be culturally sensitive and be professional.According to Chin Hor, styles and techniques of shooting depends on a few factors. One factor is the production company or TV station that the documentary is made for, as the technical specifications differs from local stations to Al Jazeera. Genre is another factor, a travelogue could have more dynamic camera movements compared to serious issue-based documentaries. ‘You should know why you are shooting each shot and make sure that every shot is good enough for the edit,’ he continued, adding that a variety of shots is necessary, to give options for editors and directors. Through experience, a DOP will learn to gauge when they have taken enough shots. After more than two hours of sharing, Chin Hor then proceeded to set up for an interview shoot, complete with 3-point lighting. He explained the use of each equipment as he sets them up. The lecturer sat in as the interviewee, while the class took out their camera to see how the shot looks like through their lens. Chin Hor showed how different lighting setups could have different effect on the subject matter, and also that no two cameras captures light and pictures in the same way. ‘The camera operator should be well-versed with their camera, but sometimes client may ask you to use a different camera for a job, then you should do research and practice with that camera beforehand,’ Chin Hor shared. The class then divided into groups of 3 to practice setting up their own interview shoot. Chin Hor went around to give more personalized feedback to each group. After staying on for another hour post-workshop to quiz Chin Hor, the students finally left, looking inspired and ready to give cinematography their best shot.

Victoriya Titova, born in Uzbekistan and raised in Malaysia, enrolled in IACT College as a Graphic Design student in 2014. “I wanted a Graphic Design course that was different from the rest – one that not only sharpened my art and design skills, but also enhanced my conceptualisation skills. Some friends recommended IACT College, so here I am,” she said. Since then, Titova has won industry awards, aced competitions and impressed her lecturers and industry professionals.Lim Yi Shien, another Graphic Design student from IACT College, shared, “When you enrol in a college founded by the creative industry, it is only natural that what we are taught is relevant to the work we do in the future.“We are trained to not only produce pretty artworks, but also designs that are practical and functional.”Both these Diploma in Graphic Design students will be continuing their journey with IACT College under the 3+0 UK degree programme BA (Hons) in Advertising Design, a partnership between the creative communication specialist college and University of Sunderland. As a pioneer in Project-Based Learning methodology, IACT College believes in nurturing students’ creativity without losing their individuality. Graphic Design Programme Leader Queenie Yaw says, “We make it a point to bring in real clients and project briefs from the industry, as we believe students learn best when they are ‘on the job’. “Even lecturers benefit from working closely with the industry, as they remain relevant.”In the past two years, Graphic Design students have worked on industry projects for big names such as Genting Malaysia Bhd, AIA Bhd, Nestle Products Sdn Bhd, PepsiCo Malaysia Sdn Bhd and even Malaysia Fashion Week. Having been founded by the industry itself, IACT College understands the need for the right kind of talent. IACT College lecturers have an average of 12 years of industry experience. Lim said, “Lecturers who are also industry practitioners give us the confidence we need when it comes to coping with our employers. After my Diploma, I had the privilege of working in an advertising agency whose creative department was run by an IACT alumni. “Also, it is true that IACT graduates are preferred as I got an offer on the spot. Industry leaders tend to believe in the job-ready philosophy of IACT College.”Besides being highly employable and job-ready, IACT College students are no stranger to industry awards and competitions too. The college empowers students to submit entries to industry awards as well as competitions by big brands such as Nando’s, Faber-Castell, Daikin and Khind. This kind of encouragement allows students to put their works to the test and help them do better. “A competitive spirit is what keeps good designers on their toes,” says Yaw, adding that she believes in driving her students to take that extra step. “Joining competitions builds the passion within each student, giving them the extra edge while pursuing their diploma.“It also teaches them to work creatively around a given brief, adhere to strict deadlines and prepare for industry standards.” To date, IACT College students have won over 60 industry awards in the past five years from competitions such as the Kancil Award, Shell Fuel Save Challenge as well as the United Nations Creative Expressions Competition.
